Work Text:
"Ethan, stop this." Will leans on the driver's side door, sighing as Ethan stares him down from the passenger side door. "I can drive my own car, I'm fine. I don't want to have this argument again."
"Two days ago, you were in an intentional car crash. It could have killed you, Will, and we still need your follow up tests. I'm not having you drive until we know for sure you're completely fine."
"Ethan, I can drive, I'm fine.” he stated bluntly, scrubbing his face in frustration. “I've been driving most of yesterday and I drove myself to work today. I'm completely stable and safe to drive."
"Well, I don't want to take any risks. The last person who should be behind the wheel is you."
Will scoffs, incredulous as he stares at Ethan. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means, we haven't fully cleared you and you're refusing your follow up tests in the department to ensure that you're fine, Will."
"Why are you always like this?” he shouted, his voice shaking with a mix of confusion and anger. “We're clocked out, leave the doctor attitude at the door, Choi."
Ethan's face sets, blinking a few times before he moves a foot back, ever so slightly, shifting where he stands. "Choi? Why are you so angry over me insisting to make sure you're okay?"
"Why can you never quit the stoic doctor act? I don't need a doctor, okay, I want my boyfriend, I want to go home with my partner, put some television on, eat way too much food, and fall asleep on the couch.” Will clenched his fist to hold back the tears that built up behind their eyes. “The past few days have been absolutely horrendous and I just want to relax and cuddle up, alright?"
"You seriously think I'm acting like this because I can't leave my job at the door?"
"What else is it, Ethan? Seriously." Will throws his hands in the air, grimacing and sighing. "Can we just go home?"
"If I drive."
"Fine."
Will steps back from the door, scowling, and tossing the keys over the roof of the car. Ethan catches them with ease and pauses. He waits for Will to get to him, opening the passenger side door for him and smiling slightly as he gets in. Will scowls and pulls the passenger door shut without Ethan's help.
Ethan sighs and heads round to get into the driver's side. He takes a moment, putting the keys into the ignition but not turning them. Will stares out the window, hand covering his mouth before he huffs. "So, now we aren't even leaving?"
"You think I'm only doing this because I'm in doctor mode, Will?"
"What other reason is there?"
Ethan stares out the windshield before taking a deep breath. "I know you're angry. I know you're upset, but really, Will? You can't think of any other reason why I'm doing this?"
Will slumps a little, seeming to deflate, almost curling in on himself. All vitriol seems to disappear from him, leaving his body with the heavy exhale Will lets out and Ethan turns his head to watch him.
Will doesn't meet his eye and looks down at his lap, seeming to hug himself.
Ethan wants to reach out, wrap his arms around Will and pull him close, kiss his temple, wrap him up in a blanket and tell him everything's going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay, over time, but it kills him to see Will looking this vulnerable.
"You're worried about me. If something happens while I'm driving, I would potentially crash and get us both injured, if not dead. If you're driving, you can at least get me to an emergency department and prevent damage."
Ethan nods, sighing. "I know it sucks and I know it's stressful. I know it seems like I'm babying you, but... I don't want to risk anything else going wrong. You've got enough to work through right now, I can't want to risk adding anything else onto that. But once you've had your next set of tests, we can start shifting things around. But I cannot risk losing you. Not after everything."
Will nods a little, resting his head against the headrest and rubbing his face. "I know. I'm sorry. I'm just... stressed. I need a break but I can't afford to take one."
"We'll have a look at what we can do, but for now, let's just relax, go home, get some food and try and relax. There's a street fair happening tomorrow, we need to be ready for a potentially busy day."
Will nods and turns his head, smiling softly at Ethan. "We still have some of those leftovers from that restaurant last night?"
"We most definitely do. How about when we get in, you hop in the shower, I'll see how much we have left and either start heating it up, or order the same thing?"
Will smiles, moving his thigh closer to the center console to accept Ethan's hand on his thigh, squeezing slightly. "I think that sounds good. Call in for me when we get back and get my tests booked in for tomorrow?"
Ethan squeezes Will's thigh and nods, leaning in. "I can do that. For a tiny price."
Will scoffs and rolls his eyes, looking out the passenger window before looking back, a grin spread across his face. "You'll have to contact my insurance."
Ethan chuckles and Will lets his eyes close, leaning in for their lips to meet. They stay that way for a moment, breathing each other in before Ethan gently pulls away with a smile. He pulls away, letting the car thrum to life and carefully backing out of the parking space. Will's arm reaches over, his hand settling on Ethan's thigh, as they drive in a comfortable silence, the argument left behind in the parking lot.
