Chapter 1: The Future

Chapter Text

Darkness.

The pitch black swallowed everything around Brendan as he stood there, staring into the abyss. It was quiet, the only thing to keep him company was his own mind.

He had no idea where he was, was it the void? The afterlife? Hell? But wherever Brendan was, it was soon about to become a purgatory.

He would start to hear the voices of the past. The voices that had haunted him for years, the voices that he feared. Brendan couldn’t get them out of his head, no matter how hard he tried.

“It’s like a family reunion! Except much, MUCH darker…”

“Finishing what I didn’t do…”

“Y- you’re just a kid…”

“No one’s here to even save you…”

“Trust me, you don’t need a heart to rule an empire. He would’ve been dead if Ellie weren’t here…”

“Just… D- don’t forget about me… A- alright?”

That last line struck Brendan like a freight train, sending him down on his knees within the inescapable black hole that surrounded him. Tears fell down his face like a leaky faucet, his hands on his trembling knees.

“It’s my fault… That was my fault… I’m sorry. It should’ve been me, instead of you.” He whimpered out, slightly shaking his head.

Suddenly, he would start hearing one more thing within his mind. It started off faint, with Brendan being able to barely hear it.

“Captain? Captain?” With each word it got louder and louder. “Captain Rose?”

Brendan would then wake up breathing heavily, he was no longer in a black, lifeless hell. Was that a dream? A hallucination? A nightmare? Brendan clutched his chest with his hand while sweating profusely, he quickly looked around to find himself in a Government issued escort vehicle.

“Captain? Are you okay?” One person would ask who was on the outside of the vehicle, the door was opened for Brendan to get out with that person holding it for him.

“Yeah… Yeah I’m okay, don’t worry about me Corporal. I’m… Fine.” Brendan would reply back, quietly trailing off as he got out of the vehicle and shut the door. He would once more take a look around, now on the outside.

Brendan Rose, formally known as Captain Rose, is currently outside the newly improved Government base for the important meeting he was called to attend. The area was filled with the sounds of trucks, soldiers, tanks and helicopters that roamed the premises.

Unfortunately for Brendan, he despised the Major of The Government organization. But due to his high rank of leadership, he could do nothing but watch.

Brendan would sigh, looking at a pair of doors that were in front of him. “Let’s get this over with, I don’t want to see his stupid face…” He muttered to himself. “You can do this, it’s fine. You got this.” He added, reassuring himself to have some sort of confidence as he opened the doors to enter the office building of the base.

Upon entering the building, it was full of recipients and undercover agents that lurked underneath the enemy lines. The Meeting Room he had to go to was on the top floor of the building, according to the higher-ups.

The top floor? Typical, it always has to be on the top floor.” Brendan grumbled to himself, starting to walk his way towards a flight of stairs. The only thing Brendan could hear were the sounds of his own footsteps that echoed off the concrete walls as if he was in a cave all alone.

Not too long after, Brendan would find his way onto the next floor where the meeting was being held. The room was labeled ‘Meeting Room C-16’, signaling that he had made it to the right place.

“Here we go, let's do it…” Brendan said to himself, placing his hand on the doorknob. Then he opened the door, where inside he was faced with everyone within the room looking at him. It looks like he was the last one to join the meeting.

“Captain Rose, we were just about to get started. Please, take a seat.” Said an old man who was in the far center of the long table, it was the Major.

Brendan slightly squinted at the Major in disgust, slowly finding his way to one of the empty seats within the pond of chairs.

“Now that Mr. Rose is here, we’re ready to begin to talk about some business around here. New missions, classified intel, the usual.” The Major would start the speak, as the other members of the room would remain quiet.

Brendan would look around the conference room, examining and classifying each person. The Major, many Lieutenants, a General from another organization, a couple spies, and… Charles!? Why was he here at this meeting? Brendan gestured his head and hand a bit saying ‘what’re you doing?’

Charles gave a wave and put a finger up to his mouth, telling Brendan to remain silent and pay attention to the meeting even if he hated it.

Brendan would roll his eyes and sigh, looking at the Major. His eyes were squinted as he started to slowly clench his fist, which would start to shake out of hatred.

All of a sudden, the Major would start to have trouble talking. Eventually leading to him holding onto his throat as if he was choking, which caused almost everyone to jump up immediately.

“Someone get a Medic up here!” One of the higher-ups shouted, as a couple flew out the door to seek medical help. Brendan remained still in the chair, now letting his hand return to normal.

Because of that, the Major would be able to breathe easily and clearly. “It- it felt like something was choking me, or someone I- I should say.” His rapid breathing could be heard throughout the room. “Nothing is wrong with me, something is g- going on..”

Charles looked at Brendan in concern, slowly getting up from the chair. “I think we should go now.”

Brendan looked at the Major after hearing what he had said, then looked down at his hand, then quickly went back to Charles with an expression of realization. “We have to get out of here, Charles.”

Charles nodded as the duo busted out of the conference room, leaving behind a crazed group of soldiers that were unaware of what just happened. They ran out of the office building, quickly heading towards an area where no one could find them.

“Brendan, what the hell just happened?” Charles asked, still concerned about what happened.

“I… I don’t know, Charles.” He slowly replied, looking at his hands. Then a bell rang in his head. “R- remember when I fought my sister many years ago?” Brendan asked

“Yeah, why?”

“She had this force power ability, using it to her advantage against me. Choking, throwing, stopping objects, you name it. And… I- I think I inherited them…”
