Work Text:

Wilbur has some sort of routine every day. For instance, he always gets his Blonde Hazelnut Latte. Usually, he stops at Sam’s coffee shop, the Creeper Coffee. However, this morning, as he stops by his favorite place, he realises that it’s closed. The "For Sale" sign is right in front of the shop. He gets out of his car and walks in to speak to Sam since they know each other very well. Maybe he'll be able to understand what happened and why he's selling his shop. He worked so hard to realise his dreams that this just feels wrong.

“Hey! I saw the sign outside, what happened?” Sam’s eyes darken full of disappointment. He seems so sad right now that Wilbur thinks he's going to cry.

“Yeah, my roommate kicked me out and I needed money to get an apartment where I can stay. They announced to me that he have a new partner and then proceeded to ditch me because his beloved was more important. It sucks so much but it's not like I can do something about it. ”

“Awh, I’m so sorry! I hope you’ll be able to reopen this shop later! It was my favorite and honestly, this place brings me so much joy. Also, since you've just closed, do you know another shop that’s near where I could go?” Sam’s eyes sparkles as soon as Wilbur finished his sentence. It feels like Sam was waiting for someone to ask him about that.

“Yes! A new coffee shop opened not too long ago! It’s called The Birdie Shop. Phil is the owner! It's a family company. I can give you the coordinates if you want me to!” Wilbur’s smile widens. He didn’t know the old man had his own business.

“Yeah I’d like that! Does Kristin also work there?”

“Nah, she’s taking a break to take care of the kids. But I think right now the kids were taking care of the shop while Phil and Kristin went on a roadtrip.” Wilbur gets confused immediately.

“Kids? I didn’t know Phil had kids!”

“Yeah no he adopted 2 kids. I mean, one of them is a kid. The other one has your age I think”

They chitchat for the next 20 minutes and then Wilbur gets in his car to drive to the shop Sam mentioned.

Tommy had to take care of the shop today, knowing that Phil had stuff to do. He was all alone which meant he couldn’t afford messing up. Fortunately, all of the clients were regulars, which was easier because they would always order the same drink. However, a new one entered the shop around 1pm. He was tall, like really tall, and had dark brown curly hair. Tommy would give him around 20 years old. He walks up to him and looks at the menu, looking for something in particular.

“Hi! What’s your order?” Wilbur doesn’t even hear him. He’s too focused on the menu. Tommy swings his hand in front of the man’s face trying to get his attention.

“Oh yeah sorry, I will take a Blonde Hazelnut Latte please!” Tommy looks right in his eyes, trying to figure out if he was serious or not.

“I’m sorry, what? Did I hear that right?” Silently, he wishes he heard that wrong.

“I’ll take a Blonde Hazelnut Latte.”

“Pfft- okay. What name will the order be for?”

“Wilbur.”

As soon as Wilbur gives the barista his order, he walks away, staring at him. He looks quite young. He sits down, looking through his twitter notifications. Since he doesn't have anything else to do, he tries to brainstorm some new lyrics for his new album. He was supposed to practice with his band later but since someone got sick, they had to cancel.

“A Blonde Hazelnut Latte for Wilbur. It’ll be 5.50 dollars” He stands up to get his drink only to realise it looks nothing like what he usually gets at the Creeper Coffee. The color is different and the taste is weird.

“Humm- I’m sorry but this isn’t what I ordered.” Tommy sighs. He doesn't want to deal with an angry customer today.

“I don’t care. I’m the barista here, this is what you’ll get. Deal with it.” Wilbur decides to just take the drink and give up. He had a long day and he just wants to relax.

__________

The next day, Wilbur comes back again and orders the same thing. Tommy decides to make him a double shot espresso, trying to see if he would argue with him or maybe get a different reaction then last time. He hated to admit it but over the days, Tommy was getting attached to Wilbur. Some say he would even consider him like his older brother.

One day, as Tommy was waiting for his brother to enter the shop, ordering his stupid order allowing Tommy to mess it up like he always did, Phil came back from his roadtrip with his wife.

“Hey dad! How are you?” Phil looks at his son and gives him a small hug.

“I’m doing great, Tom! Kristin and I had so much fun during the roadtrip! We saw a lot of cool stuff! I'll show you the pictures we took tonight. Also, did you manage to keep the shop safe? Oh and, where is Techno?” At that same moment, Wilbur entered the shop with his usual annoying but happy grin.

“Hey Tommy, my man! What shall be my order today?” He said, not realizing that his little brother was already talking with Phil.

“Hey Will! Phil, that’s Wilbur. I think you guys already know each other, am I right?”

“Yeah we do know each other. We met under the wrong circumstances but still.” Phil lets out a small laugh, trying to keep it in.

“I mean, of course getting punched in the face by Techno isn’t the best but at least now you guys are over it. I had to deal with your annoying attitude and Techno wouldn't let go.”

“You’re such a dickhead. Imagine punching someone younger than you. Oh my god, couldn't be me.” Tommy says, being sarcastic, knowing that he once also punched a kid in the face because they stole his moth plushie.

“You’re one to talk you dumb child. Remember when you told me about the kid you pushed in the water? And the one you kicked because they stole your food. And the one-” Wilbur says, enumerating everytime Tommy had punched a kid for stupid reasons. Phil started laughing which caused the concerned look of many customers.

“Okay okay! I get it! But, let me say that they all deserved it.” Tom says, trying to keep his serious face on.

They talk for the next couple of hours until Tommy’s shift ends. Phil has to close the shop for the night, leaving the brothers together.

“Hey Tom, wanna get some ice cream?”

__________

So here they are, waiting for their ice creams at 10pm in the front of a random shop, laughing and telling themselves stories of the best time of their childhood. They enjoy their time walking on the road and in the end, Tommy ends up dropping his ice cream on the ground.

Some people walking near look at them and can’t stop thinking

“They look like brothers.”
