Work Text:

“It’s literally… four in the morning.” a groggy Wilbur Soot yawned as he blindly reached for his alarm clock in the dark.

“I know! Come on!” Tommy started pulling at his brother’s arm, trying to shove him out of bed “You need to see this, its fucking the best thing,”

“Okay, fine, fine! I’m up.” Wilbur finally caved, ripped off his duvet cover and lazily switched on his bedside lamp.

He looked up at Tommy, who waited anxiously for Wilbur to follow him. He grinned excitedly as he bounced on his feet.

“Look, follow me,” Tommy smiled, as Wilbur followed him out of his cozy, dimly lit bedroom and into the dark, empty hall way.

“You are mental, you know that?” Wilbur commented as Tommy led him into his own bright bedroom.

Tommy scampered past his unmade bed and keyboard and over to the window sill.

It was a deep ledge that Tommy had expertly decorated with pillows and game cartridges, all in fluorescent shades of blue and red.

Tommy sat, looking up to the right hand corner of the sill.

“Come here, look there!” Tommy said impatiently as Wilbur sat beside him, searching for what in the world Tommy could be so ecstatic over.

On the very edge of the wall sat a moth.

It was a warm, earthy grey with four distinct brown spots on its large, impressive wings.

“It’s a moth, Wil.” Tommy grinned, looking to his amused brother.

“That’s definitely a moth. Did you drag me out of bed to look at a moth?” Wilbur said, almost exasperatedly.

“What? You against moths?” Tommy sounded highly offended, his hand on his heart, “What did she do to you?”

“Nothing, nothing.” Wilbur smiled in spite of himself.

“I think its an antler month, look at its antenna!” Tommy continued, transfixed by the small bug as it climbed across the span of white wall.

“It’s very cool,” Wilbur laughed silently.

The two sat on that tiny ledge for what felt like years, watching a tiny insect run laps, stretch its wing span and folding back, before it took flight out of the crack in the window.

“That was a very cool moth.” Tommy practically beamed.
