Work Text:

Sharp, ruby red orbs narrowed to baby blue and pearl gray hues, a sickening silence filling the air between the two. Neither one of them seems to want to break. The ash blond tapped his foot on the floor in an anticipating motion, the dual haired male not giving any reaction nor response to his subtle actions. Two could play at that game.

An annoyed scoff left the one who seemed to be radiating impatience, both of them knowing exactly what each other was thinking. The tension that was in the air was incredibly thick and despite their cold expressions, it was rather hard to breathe with the anxiety that shot through the both of them. Was this really about to happen? Were they really going to do this to themselves after so long?

"Sho."

"Kat."

Nicknames that used to bring such joy and light to them were dripping in malice, used in a more harmful way than good as to their intentions. It was just unfortunate timing but after time and time again, they were getting upset and beginning to not want to take it. Someone can only balance so much frustration and so much love.

"You're late, again."

"And you're pointing that out, again."

Silence filled the air once more as they argued, Bakugou's teeth clenched in an anger that threatened to grow, Todoroki's fist clenching at his side. This was ridiculous but they needed this. It couldn't go on much longer and they were both grasping at the same straws everytime they did this.

It needed to end.

Vermillion eyes rolled in annoyance to the other's argument, the dual haired male crossing arms over his chest with a huff. What was Bakugou so upset about? It wasn't like he was the only one who overworked, came home late, and rarely talked. They both were guilty of not putting in effort.

"We do this everytime.." the explosive male that was rather calm sighed out, heterocrylic hues narrowing, making it clear he wasn't amused in the slightest hearing him state the obvious.

"Oh, do we? I haven't noticed. It's definitely not like it happens every two weeks or so." Todoroki retorted, stepping further into the room towards the one that sat on the arm of the couch, who had been waiting for his arrival back to the home they shared. A home that wasn't going to last at this rate.

"Don't be like that—"

"Like what? Like what, Katsuki? We bicker so often and it's not healthy! We're overworked, don't spend time together, arguing, distant— and you don't care! It sure as hell doesn't look like you do."

Something snapped within the blond who was facing the dual haired male's fury, fists clenching as he stood to face the other in the middle of the room eye to eye.

"Don't you dare say I don't care! I've put so much into this, into us— don't say I don't care! Okay, so we're both top pro heroes with low time to ourselves— maybe we— maybe we need a break to fix ourselves!"

A quiet, barely audible, shocked gasp left the dual haired male, a hand raising to poke the other's chest and push him back a step, hurt by his choice of words. Things begun to spiral. "Fix ourselves? Seriously? How would a break of all things, 'fix' this? Do you hear yourself? God, you're so selfish! How about we— I don't know— take time off? Go on an actual date that isn't ruined by a mission? Spend a day here without worry? Why is a break the first thing you think of? Do you always think of getting a break from me?" Shoto ranted, heterochromatic orbs watering in frustration. This was the one, he had hoped. There was so much put in this relationship and it couldn't slip through his fingers like this— not so soon.

A low grunt escaped Katsuki as he took a step back, crimson eyes narrowing to the one before him as he went on, a part of him breaking once he saw how the other was hurt and frustrated. Yet a fire had been lit in him and he couldn't help but take offense as the words shouted at him were from someone he cared for, someone he held close to his heart. "Of course not, idiot! So, caring about our relationship is being selfish? Really? It's like you don't listen! We're heroes to fight, not fall in love! Get that in your head! We have a duty, a responsibility to our society—"

"But Katsuki— you have a responsibility to us!"

..

With that, the room went silent, reluctant and silent tears falling from both mismatched and ruby red hues as they stared into one another with a sad look. What had happened to them? What happened to that bond they swore would never break? What happened to the love that had blossomed?

The dual haired male inhaled a shaky breath, sniffling as he wiped away tears from his eyes, looking to the very little amount of space between them, head bent down. Bakugou looked over the other's head and rubbed the nape of his own neck with his right hand, letting the few tears fall freely as he exhaled lowly. Could they fix this? Were things truly broken? Had it really been too long?

"Okay."

"Okay, what, Shoto?"

"We should take a break."

Hearing those dreaded words, the ash blond sucked in a breath, really not wanting to reply to that. Was he going to let this happen? Was this it?

Wordlessly, his calloused hand moved to take the dual haired male's soft one, thumb rubbing over his knuckles like how he used to, pulling him in to an embrace for what it was worth. Utter silence set the scene, heart heavy and crumbling as words were whispered into the air and lips pressed delicately against his forehead until they parted.

"Okay then."

Heterocrylic hues looked back to the ash blond once more, box in hand as he stood in front of the open door of what they used to call a home, one they used to share together. It had been months and neither of them truly wanted the other to leave but they needed to start fresh, to act like what they had never happened so they could begin anew.

It hurt as bad as being stabbed in the heart, unshed tears in both of their eyes, the ash blond giving a small nod. It was what was best, for the both of them. Maybe in due time, they'd adjust schedules and get ahold of themselves. One can only hope.

Silent words were exchanged and they both knew it was painful but they were young, they had time. They'd grow up and see what they truly wanted in the future and if they saw themselves in each other's arms, then so it would be. For now, they needed space. Plans were arranged and eventually Todoroki was ready to move out for a while, the dual haired male finally building up the courage to speak without his voice cracking.

"Enjoy your break, Bak— .. Katsuki."

"You too .. Shoto."
