Thankful for the time off, Luisa sat on the rooftop overlooking the backyard of la Casa Madrigal as she enjoyed the mingling fragrances of blossoms from the forest, as well as the laundry soap that her mother and her uncle were using below. It’s been a day since Casita had been fully rebuilt, and Mirabel somehow revived their Miracle, and things had since settled down.
The return of Tío Bruno was the biggest change of all. Luisa had been quite young when he’d disappeared, and while she could still remember him entertaining her sisters, cousins, and herself, she had become accustomed to the family dynamic without him in it. Having him around was a lot to get used to in the weeks that it had taken the townspeople to help rebuild their house. Seeing him make jokes at the table reminded Luisa what had been missing in all those years that he was gone: Tío Bruno balanced out her mamá’s reticence and Tía Pepa’s agitation. His presence brought out the best in both his sisters, as well as the silent joy radiating from Abuela.
Luisa had spent earlier that morning refilling their water tank, and she decided to not bother coming into the house and watched her family falling back into place from the roof. Indoors, Papá was playing the piano, and Mirabel was accompanying him with her accordion. The dulcet melodies made for the peaceful scene of her mamá and Tío Bruno washing his clothes together. Mamá took care of his ruanas while Bruno took care of the rest. Luisa giggled when her mamá instructed Tío Bruno to take off the shirt he was wearing and add it to the pile. Tío Bruno laughed as he obeyed.
