Summary
Dumbledore didn’t touch his wand at all, ever since that night. Long after the summer breeze of 1899 left him, void of a heart, broken by love.
There was someone at his door. “Albus,” the figure says, a word whispered many times from his mouth, this time dry and empty and broken.
“Gellert,” Dumbledore replied, voice careful, strained, quiet. Why are you here? Why did you leave? Why did you come back? The questions died in his throat as he stared at the man in front of him in both wonder and horror.
“I’m sorry,” Grindelwald said.
And of course, he could never hate the man he loved. “I forgive you,” Dumbledore replied without thinking, because he couldn’t think if it was Grindelwald who stood in front of him, drenched in rain, voice broken and heart damaged. Because he could forgive the man he loved for anything. Because his heart, too broken to beat on its own, longed for Grindelwald’s, even now.
(Or, the death of a love story, told in three parts, across five decades.)
