I'm In Love With A Fairytale, Even Though It Hurts

Summary:

in which Grian remembers his alliance with Scar in his last moments.

Work Text:

It was only supposed to be for one life. He had only pledged one life to helping Scar. After all, Scar's first death had been his fault. But there was just something about him. Something kept Grian around. Maybe it was because it took so long for him to lose his own first life, maybe it was Scar's natural charm. Whatever it was, Grian found himself purposely keeping himself alive to extend his stay with Scar.

When Scar lost his second life, Grian was scared. Would his friend try to kill him? But he never did. Scar brought him flowers, offering them to him with a smile.

"Can we still be friends?"

That was all it took. Grian's fear melted away, and he made the decision to continue to protect Scar.

When Grian lost his first life, Scar expected him to leave. But he didn't. Grian woke up in his bed in their desert home, heart racing. He took a few minutes to breathe, then went back to where Scar was. He wasn't going to leave him now. They'd seen too much together.

And soon there were only three players left. As Grian watched the friendship pass flutter to the ground, sirens went off in his head. As he faced Bdubs' arrow, he could only think one distraught thought.

TRAITOR SCAR! TRAITOR!

But he came back all the same- and then there were two.

Scar had killed Bdubs, leaving the two of them as the only remaining players. For a time, the two had empty hope that maybe they could both win. But the longer they avoided killing each other, the louder the voices got. The louder they cried for blood.

Scar bowed his head, surrendering without a second thought. Grian was numb. His eyes burned from tears as he felt the last breath leave Scar under his hands. He was horrified at what he had just done.

I'm sorry, Scar, I'm so sorry..

Hiz head is fuzzy, his heart broken and his life empty. He's a shell of his former self. Grian hardly even notices the ravine below him, and when he does… He doesn't even try to stop his fall.

And then there were none.
