Work Text:

He could hear the blood rushing in his ears over the roar of the crowd. His heart was racing as the adrenaline was pumping through his veins. He loved it though, the rush, the fear, the crowd. It was all so intoxicating. He couldn’t stop smiling as he adjusted himself to the moving animal underneath him. Uhtred was next to him on the gate helping him to adjust his bull rope, the bull itself was getting impatient to get out of the chute. He gripped and re-gripped, trying to get his hand just right. Once he was out there, there would be no time to fix anything if he fucked it up.

Uhtred asked him if he was ready and he nodded his head, he was as ready as you could be in this type of situation. He watched as Uhtred got off the gate wall and walked over to Sihtric who was holding the gate rope waiting for him to give the alright. They all looked at each other and Finan gave a nod that he was ready. Sihtric smiled and pulled hard on the rope and the gate swung open. The bull wasted no time in jumping out of the chute trying to rid himself of his unwanted passenger.

They went this way and that, the bull spinning and Finan hanging on for dear life. Left hand in the air wanting to come down in self preservation, but he resisted the urge. He didn’t know how long he had been out in the arena but he sure hoped that the buzzer sounded soon. It felt like a lifetime, but it was finally called he had made it the full eight seconds. All the adrenaline ramped up again, as he reached down to undo the bull rope.

He could only hope that he and the bull had performed well enough to get a good enough score to head to finals. He got up from where he fell and ran to the wall. There honestly was not better feeling in the world than the feeling he had right now hearing the crowd cheer and especially after hearing that his score was sending to the top of the scoreboards.

This is what he dreamed about. Rodeo was life.
