Work Text:

Marinette is specific. Kagami isn't used to people like her. All her life she was surrounded by serious people whose faces looked like a concrete wall. Marinette... is different. She makes her feel different feelings that she never used to feel.

Kagami and Marinette are complete opposites. They are like the sun and the moon. Kagami prefers text messages, and Marinette loves calling others. She always calls Kagami, even if she just wants to wish her a good day.

Today's day isn't different. Marinette calls Kagami at six in the morning, just like every other day.

"Good morning", Marinette says sleepily. Kagami realizes that the girl probably just woke up. It's even sweet that one of the first things she does when she wakes up is to call her friend.

"Good morning, Marinette", Kagami says before taking a cup of coffee in his hand. Kagami isn't good at talking to others.  She often doesn't know what to say, so she is quiet, creating an awkward atmosphere.

It's different with Marinette. Kagami feels comfortable with her, no matter what. Kagami mentally deletes the words she had previously assigned to Marinette.

"I just wanted to wish you a tasty breakfast and a good day.  Hope I'm not disturbing you", Kagami imagines Marinette lying in bed, smiling at the phone.

Kagami finally finds the perfect words to describe a girl.  Marinette is neither specific nor different. Marinette is special.

"You never disturb me", Kagami says quietly. She can hear Marinette exhale slowly. "Just... why do you always call?" Kagami pauses but corrects herself quickly so that Marinette doesn't get it the wrong way. "I mean, the morning messages would be more than enough for me."

There is silence. They don't say anything for a while, and Kagami wants to apologize to her, but that's when Marinette speaks up.

"I just wanted to hear your voice."

The girl on the other side of the phone sounds so insecure.  Marinette was never insecure. Until now. Kagami doesn't know what to say.

"Oh, okay", Kagami says, without even thinking about what she's saying. "So... you heard my voice. Talk to you tomorrow at the same time. As always." Kagami hangs up before Marinette can even say goodbye.

Kagami puts the phone down. She feels the warmth spread down her cheeks. She doesn't even realize she's smiling.

Maybe Marinette isn't special at all. Maybe Marinette is just special to Kagami.
