Spring

Summary:

Keigo's bird brain at it again. I just love the headcanon that Spring gets him all riled up.

Work Text:

It’s the first spring Keigo’s spent with Touya. He could feel the change in his wings even before the snow was fully melted. It was going to be a warm spring and Keigo’s instincts were telling him to get busy. The storms would be rolling in soon and all good birds needed to be secure before then.

They were outdated instincts. Keigo and Touya had a nice apartment. They had stable jobs and no strong wind was going to upset that. There were no awakening predators and, Keigo flushed at the thought, no spring chicks coming.

Still, his bird brain told him to move.

So he cleaned. Touya had made fun of him for it but Keigo couldn’t help himself. He went through their old things and got rid of certain tattered clothes that have been mildly irking him. He washed and tucked away the heavy winter gear. The coats and heavy blankets. The thinner linen was washed and hung to dry in the warm sunlight.

By the time the first early spring flowers were just poking up, Keigo had the whole apartment stripped washed, and put together. Much to Keigo’s relief, Touya seemed fairly understanding after the first couple days of madness. He teased, of course, he teased. Touya wouldn’t be Touya if he didn’t give Keigo a hard time over every little thing. But, he also helped. He didn’t come home and sit around watching Keigo do the work. He’d even gone out and rented one of those fancy carpet cleaners to surprise Keigo with.

It made Keigo feel warm. He chirped and trilled in happiness as his mate helped them preen their nest for the new year.

Glass shattered in the quiet and it took Touya rushing to his side for Keigo to realize he had been the one to drop it. He dismissed the fussing and insisted he wasn’t hurt. It was just a little bit of glass, there were more important things to be worried about.

When had Keigo’s brain latched onto the idea that Touya was his mate. He looked around the apartment with wide-open eyes. There was a clear mix of Touya’s things mixed in with his, but now that Keigo was looking with a sudden new perspective he was shocked at how much of it seemed to belong to neither of them or perhaps better described as belonging to both of them.

Who wanted that living room table? It felt like the lamp Touya uses to read late into the night just appeared there one day, but Keigo’s pretty sure it didn’t come from Touya’s place.

Warm gentle hands guided Keigo to sit on the couch and he was almost roughly pulled from his thoughts when Touya pulled Keigo’s chin to look at him.

“Pretty Bird, what’s wrong?”

Keigo blinked away some of his surprise and he looked back at Touya, his deep blue eyes full of concern and they were wavering as if wanting to desperately find what was wrong while also refusing to look away from Keigo’s face.

“I’m okay-” Keigo tried before he was interrupted by a sharp ”Bullshit” from Touya.

“No, really,” Keigo said more firmly while taking Touya’s hands into his own, and grew concerned to find that they were shaking. “What’s wrong with you?”

The noise Touya made was hard to describe. “What’s wrong with me?” He repeated Keigo’s question before his brow furrowed.

“Yeah,” Keigo said while gently stroking his fingers over Touya’s knuckles, “You’re shaking.”

“Keigo!” Touya looked exasperated, “I come home one day to my boyfriend cleaning the whole damn house as if it’s some kind of crime scene. You’ve been getting more and more lost in thought, have you even noticed how many feathers you’ve been losing? And then you just drop a glass in the middle of the Kitchen!

It felt like a truck had hit him and Keigo had no idea how to put his current thoughts into non bird ones, “It’s spring,” he mumbled softly.

Notes:

I've been practicing getting back into the daily writing habbit. I've got a new job that's freed up a lot of hours for me and I'm feeling myself settle after the nightmare that I've been living the last year.

I appreciate the patience many of my followers have had with me being away. I'm hoping to get back into my WIPs soon. I know this is just a little snippet thing, and a little late for spring, but hopefully it's the start of more.

I've missed writing so much.
