I’d rather be me (with you)

Summary:

Lena is in love with Kara.

Kara is oblivious, as always.

But there's nowhere that either of them would rather be.

Notes:

Wrote this to the Steven Universe song 'I’d rather be me (with you)'.
Wrote it in the middle of the night though but I thought I'd post it anyway.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

I'd rather be tall, I'd rather be smart
I'd rather be sure you know I care

“Donuts? For me? If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were trying to buy my love Lena Luthor.” Kara grinned as she touched down on the balcony dressed in one of Lena’s oversized t-shirts, which was really normal sized on her, and track pants too.

Lena’s eyes roamed the toned arms that would flying her home at the end of the day. Strong, defined muscles flexing as the blonde closed the balcony door behind her.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Kar. You like donuts and I was walking past Noonan’s on my way back to work from lunch.” Lena blushed a crimson red, keeping her eyes glued to the rather interesting small scratch on her office’s tile floor.

Kara grinned a happy toothy grin and shoved a powdered donut into her mouth with as much glee as she has when she sees a cute puppy.

“You had lunch? I’m proud.” Kara breathed out after downing her second donut, although coming from someone else it would sound sarcastic, Kara was completely genuine.

“Yes, I did, salad and a protein shake if you must know.” Lena replied with a knowing grin while picking up her own donut and pulling pieces off for herself while Kara nodded her approval.

“You don’t have to take me home you know; I can walk myself.” Lena mumbled as Kara shook her head in utter shock as if someone had stolen one of the six donuts from the box in front of her.

“Lee, you know there’s nowhere I’d rather be right now than with you.” Kara adjusted herself in her seat, wiping her mouth free of sugar dust.

“That’s just because there’s donuts here.”

“As I said, nowhere.”

Wherever you go, whatever you start
I'd rather be sure you know I'm there

“It’s only a few days away Kara. I told you I wouldn’t miss game night and I mean to keep that promise.” Lena huffed through the phone as she sat on the lumpy mattress in her London hotel room.

“Besides. It’s cold here at the moment. You wouldn’t like it, all rain, and no sun.” She added before turning to lay down in any way that was comfier than she was right now.

“Well, that’s not safe for flying, common Lee, let me fly you home. You don’t even need to stay for the last few meetings! Jess told me so.” Kara whined and Lena could practically here her pout from halfway across the world.

Lucky they were on a phone call because Lena wasn’t sure she’d be able to resist the crinkle between Kara’s eyebrows.

Anything to sooth it.

“These offices need me here for at least the next few days. I promise, back for game night.” She whispered with a yawn in the middle, sleep starting to take her over.
“Okay fine. You win. Friday?” Kara mumbled with a sigh.

“Friday...” Lena responded quietly before sleep fully pulled her down, a light layer of goose bumps covering her arms as she shivered slightly.

“Night Lee...” Kara grinned hearing Lena’s breaths even out, signalling that she’d fallen asleep.

A few hours later Lena awoke slowly to a warm arm wrapped around her waist, a heavy head on her chest and a light snore coming from the intruder. And for a split-second Lena did freak out before the sweet smell of strawberry shampoo filled her nose.

“Night Kar...” Lena Sighed softly and opened her eyes to see the moonlight peeking through the curtains, illuminating the crinkle that had taken residence upon Kara’s face.

“Nowhere I’d rather be then with you.” she mumbled pulling the Alien sized personal heater closer and placing a light kiss to sooth her best friend’s sleepy frustration, the crinkle immediately dissipating into a soft and sleepy sigh.

I'd rather I always be a part of whatever you do
I'd rather be me with you

“This new super suit is awesome! I mean look Alex! Solar Bombs!” Kara squealed, jumping up and down in place while she tried to show the dispenser on her arm to her sister.

“Yes Kara. I see it. Would you stand still for five seconds, this kryptonite shield won’t adjust itself.” Alex huffed, clearly exhausted with her sisters’ excited puppy behaviour while the other woman in the room found it enduring.

“Here, give us the suit. Why don’t you go get some food for us all to eat when we’re done with this?” Lena offered as she extended her hand, the suit chip in her hand before she could blink, the super nowhere to be seen as well.

“I see you’ve learnt to speak Kara.” Alex smirked as she made her way over to the lab table slowly.

“I don’t know what you mean.” The younger woman said, sparing a quick glance at the red head before plugging in her newest design of the super suit to the computer.

“Sure, you don’t miss genius child.” Alex snorted and crossed her arms leaning against the bench.

“Anyway, don’t you have a bunch of things going on at the foundation that you have to take care of? Not that I don’t love having you here to translate Kara for the others, but I can finish up with the tweaks on the suit.” She added, watching Lena closely for any tells of a lie.

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be then making sure she’s safe.” Lena said, turning to Alex to give her a genuine smile, not a single tell appearing on her face.

Wherever we go, I already trust
I'd know what to do if it were us

“I can’t believe you tried to fit an entire hotdog in your mouth, Kara.” Lena said with disgust after sending the video to Alex as instructed, no questions asked as they walked hand in hand through the carnival stalls.

Kara’s reason being that Lena’s hand felt chilly when hers had brushed against it a couple of hours earlier.

“It was a bet, Lena. I can’t let a six-year-old beat me at a bet about food. That’s just embarrassing.” Kara explains herself, staring at her like it was the most obvious reason for shoving a whole hotdog in her mouth.

Lena nodding long with a grin the entire time, accepting the other woman’s antics she’d come to love.

“Anyway, Esme owes me five bucks now so, winning.” Kara triumphantly laughed and before Lena could tell her off for taking bets and bribes with a six-year-old she was pulled towards a stall to their left, a fake beach set up behind the kid running it.

“Kara. We do not need to enter a competition to win a holiday. You know I’d take you anywhere already and really.” Lena lifts her eyebrows at the growing pout paired with the shining blue puppy dog eyes that were currently forming.

“But what if I wanted to take you somewhere?” Kara huffed making a break to pick up the pen to start filling in her information on the sign-up sheet.

“Kara. You can touch clouds.” Lena said in a hushed tone taking the pen from the blonde’s hand mid word.

“Okay but what If…” Kara mumbled off, turning back to the poster hanging near them then back to Lena and started to write with a pen she seemed to have plucked from thin air before Lena took that one too with an amused smile.

“Australia?... Australia was a place you’ve always wanted to go to!” Kara said with furrowed eyebrows and a slightly confused look on her face that make Lena almost give in right then and there.

“I can assure, it’s not. And God… Where do you keep getting these?” Lena huffed, taking the third pen out of her hand before Kara could start writing again.

“Okay then where? Where in the entire world would you want to go if you could?” Kara knew full well that between them they could get there and now was determined to make it happen.

“Anywhere?”

“Anywhere.”

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be, then with you.”

I'd know what to say, I'd know how to be
I'd know your entire syllabus

“She’s doesn’t like me like that, Alex. I’d know if she did.” Kara grumbled, crossing her arms over her chest, and looking pointedly at her sister.

“No offence, but Kara you wouldn’t know flirting if it hit you in the face with a kryptonite glove. You are completely oblivious.” Alex shrugged and shovelled some rice into her mouth.

“I mean. You two have been just about dating for like 7 months now, since basically June.” She added as a fork was dropped, clattering against the floor much like Kara’s jaw right now.

“Are not!” she said with a breath of air she didn’t know she was holding in.

“Kara, really. She spends all of her spare time with you, you go on little dates, and you haven’t stopped smiling since June. Although I’d argue that you’ve been doing that for the past 6 years now.” Alex listed off and continued to eat her food like she hadn’t just dropped that bomb on Kara.

“You have no proof.”

“No but Nia does. That girls been keeping tabs, bets, and receipts on this for years now, in case she had to intervene with your oblivious assess and show you how perfect you are for each other. There’s a lot of money ridding on this too.” Alex finished her mouthful, looking up at a wide-eyed Kara, looking like she was trying to process everything she was hearing.

“Oh my god… I’m dating Lena. Wait bets?” She mumbled as her train of thought caught up to her finally and her brain was able to take in information again.

“Wait Kar, where are you going?” The red head stood slowly following Kara towards the window she was already climbing out of.

At least she’d forgotten about the betting of her non-official relationship status.

“We’ll circle back to the bets but right now there’s nowhere I’d rather be then telling Lena Luthor I love her.” Kara nodded as matter of fact as she could before shooting out her window, almost quick enough to create a sonic boom.

I can't think of any other thing in the world I would rather do

“Lena! Lena!” Kara shouted, making her way through the (always open) balcony door in a mad rush, civilian clothes, and all.

“Kara?! Are you okay? What’s wrong? Are you hurt? What’s going on?” Lena rushed to the hero’s side in an instant, checking her over for any ailment or sign she was hurt before guiding her over to the couch.

“Lena!” Was all kara could get out in her current flustered state as the girl of steel crumbled at the soft touch of the one, she loved.

Finally knowing it, finally accepting it.

“Kara, what’s wrong...?” Lena furred her eyebrows further if that was possible and held the concerned gaze that had been upon the blonde since she barged in.

“I love you.”
“What?”

“What.” Lena repeated as she waited for her brain to catch up to her words.

“I love you… like. Really love you. And I’m sorry it took me so long to realise! I just. My sister says I’m oblivious and I guess I really was until now. and she said you were flirting, and I didn’t believe her, and I still don’t really but-“ Kara flew back with an ‘oof’ as she was pushed back, and a pair of soft pink lips were attached to hers.

Effectively cutting off the rambling apologies and giving Kara an answer to a question she hadn’t asked yet.

As both women found it harder to continue their passionate first kiss because of lack of air, a ringing in the air signalled someone was trying to reach Lena, probably about an account or something as Kara rolled her eyes.

“You should, um...” but before Kara could tell her to pick up and take the call she was pulled in for another kiss as Lena pulled back once more to take in the love of her life’s features closer than she ever had before.

“It sounds important...” Kara mumbled as she breathed out, pulling back from the kiss to look towards the continuous ringing of the phone.

“Kara.” Lena whispered, smiling fondly while taking Kara’s face in her hands and resting her forehead against her own.

“There’s nowhere in the whole world I’d rather be right now than here, with you.” And Kara’s blush grew darker as her smile turned into a giggle and her hands found a home in Lena’s.

A home she’d been searching for, for so long.

If I could be, I'd rather be me with you

“Surrender or suffer the consequences!” Kara roared out; her stance stiff as Lena let out a hearty laugh.

“You love me, there would never be consequences, you’re bluffing.” Lena smirked, readying her weapon at her unsuspecting wife.

Her wife she’d loved so much.

Love meant nothing to her if she could win this war.

“Please Lena… Don’t make me do this... You’re not a villain!” Kara pleaded; her own weapon carefully packed away behind her back.

“Oh Darling, you really don’t know me then.” Lena cocked the weapon, a harsh spray of water hitting Kara square in the face.

“Oh god, the light, I see the light!” Kara dramatically brought her hands to her face before trying to deflect the oncoming assault that was coming from both her wife and her niece.

“Esme! The Betrayal how could you!” She squealed as Esme rounded the corner, she was hiding from to follow behind Lena who was holding her stomach as she laughed.

“Aunt Lena said I could have Ice cream for dinner if I was on her team.” Esme said casually, her small hands still throwing water balloons at Kara.

Lena shrugged and smirked as she walked over to where Kara was lying on the ground, closed her jaw gently with her finger and held out her hand to help her up. That was a mistake, Lena does admit, as Kara pulled her to the left and sunk them both into the pool they had been using as ammo for their water pistols and balloons.

“Now who’s taking bets and bribes with eight-year-olds.” Kara said smugly as Lena splattered water and clung to her wife to save some body heart from the freezing pool water.

“How was I supposed to beat a hero with super hearing and speed by myself.” Lena shrugged and was thankfully handed a towel as the pair was floated out of the pool.

“You know I’d always let win anyway.” Kara grinned and headed inside with her wife and niece.

“You Know that’s not how I’d want to win.” Lena huffed and nuzzled into Kara’s neck after Esme had gone off to have a shower.

“And I wouldn’t want you any other way, Lena Luthor- Danvers.” Kara mumbled as she kissed Lena’s forehead gently.

“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life in your arms.”

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”
