Summary:

Viruses always seem to win in the end, don't they. Even when the entire planet is fighting for its life, it grasps around itself faster than anyone could ever stop it. So what do you do when you can't stop it? You close it off, contain the infected area, to save yourself. That's exactly what happened to Y/N, locked in the city with nothing but the infected ones. This wasn't a normal virus however, not like those that just make you cough. No, this was one that turned people into vicious killers, making them lose their minds. The closest thing to it ever known was the term zombies, but even those weren't dangerous enough to describe them. Escaping is the only chance of survival, but how does one escape the inevitable? When death was near, who is the person who saved you?

Chapter Text

How did this even start? How did humanity suddenly go crazy, how did almost everyone I knew turn into merciless killers, animals, monsters? Darkness surrounded me, all alone, locked up in my room. These days it was a blessing to be alone though, you never knew when another one had caught up on you.

Screams outside have become normal, it didn't scare me anymore. "Ah, another one huh" would be my first thought. I tried to ignore it, to ignore all the sounds, the conditions, but the weight of the world would always try to bring me down with it.

I had been thinking about it for a long time now, a plan on how to escape. In movies, zombie-like figures always seem kind of dumb, seeing how they can't even open a door. These... 'creatures', however, do know how to open a door. That's the whole problem. They aren't slow, they aren't weak at all. They all have normal human abilities, just not normal human brains anymore.
It was never really revealed how the virus had started, what it was that caused the virus, whether it was created or something out of our control, wether there is a cure or not. It just started suddenly was there.

These days it's a miracle to even see someone, someone normal I mean. Occasionally there are people who try to run but without much succes. It's been rumoured there's an entire artificial wall around the city to keep the virus from spreading further, but I don't think anyone's ever really seen it, or that whoever has seen it didn't survive to tell the tale.
Since no one can go outside anymore, food, electricity, water, all those things have become a luxury by now. I almost ran out of food, have maybe one bottel of water left and only blankets to keep me warm. That's why I needed to get out of here. At this point, I will die anyway.

When there was still electricity, I searched up as much as possible about the town, underground tunnels, shelters etcetera, at this point my whole wall was covered with prints of it. I barricaded all the doors, windows, everything they could possibly get in through. So far none have actually managed to get through, although some have tried.

The first time was awfully frightening. Hearing the banging on on the door, the sound of glass shattering. I ran upstairs as fast as possible that day, barricading the door to my room. Somehow, however, after a week or so, it became suspiciously quiet. I peaked through the keyhole, and weirdly enough, didn't see anything anymore. Up to this day I'm still wondering how I got so lucky.
A loud knocking on the door startled me. "I really have to get out of here" I stated, putting everything in my backpack. I looked at my wall once more, having memorized every single print by now. "Here I go."

This is where the most dangerous part started. Getting across the street. From there I could actually get underground. If only I could distract them for long enough they shouldn't notice me. Others have tried as well, usually waiting 'till nightfall, since they get slower then. They need sunlight to be up to speed, without, they seem more like the movie zombies. Still horrible, but...less.

The stars were out, the sun long gone, the only light coming from the moon. I looked out the window upstairs, trying to see if there was anything out in the street. Unfortunately there were, but only a few. It shouldn't be too hard. Since none were actually in front of my door anymore, I could quietly open it.

I grabbed one of the old metal buckets, throwing away as far as possible, quickly closing the door again as all 'heads' turned, running and stumbling towards the sound. I ran out without thinking, this was my only chance.
However, it didn't go as planned. I tripped over what seemed like nothing, making a quiet, but still audible sound. I got up again, running as fast as possible as I saw all of them turn to me, coming my way in a horribly quick speed.

I ran with tears in my eyes, scared for my life as suddenly the entrance opened, scaring me even more. "Quick, what is one plus one!" a voice shouted from underneath. I couldn't see anyone, but had no choice. "Two!" I shouted out, wanting to be confused, but not even having the time for it. The lid opened wide, a boy my age coming out. "JUMP IN!" he yelled as he saw the monsters closing in.

Without thinking I jumped, the boy closing the lid again, holding it shut tight until it calmed down. I sat down, catching my breath, tears in my eyes, checking out my knee which started bleeding after the fall. "Is this why we had to learn math in school?" I said, still trying to catch my breath. The boy let out a chuckle. "Not really, I just had to know if you weren't one of them. As far as I know they can't talk, but if they could, I'm pretty sure they can't do math."

He sat down in front of me, ripping some of the fabric off his shirt to wrap it around my knee. "Can you stand?" he asked, holding out his hand. I nodded, too flustered to even speak. I never would have thought someone would be here, alive, let alone someone of my age. I hesitantly grabbed his rough hand as he pulled me up. "We've got to get moving just in case, come with me."

I quietly followed him into an underground bunker, with a red steel door in front of it. He knocked nine times as it instantly opened, revealing an elevator. He got in, smiling as he finally got a good look at me, holding out his hand once more. "I'm Changbin, welcome to district nine!"
