Featherpaw’s breathing is a slow, steady comfort. She sleeps almost as much as the triplets, and the bulk of Mistyfoot’s days since they were discharged from the hospital have been spent like this.
She’s always cautious with Featherpaw, her sleep fragile, but she seems to have settled into something deep enough that Mistyfoot can extract her phone from her pocket. She has it on every level of silence and no notifications she can, because four disrupted naps is more than she can handle.
(Even if Mistyfoot has debated the merits of recording Featherpaw waking up to prove that she is, in fact, not an easy riser.)
Stonefur’s texted her.
Do you guys need anything?
Mistyfoot sighs. She needs an extra set of hands. She needs to be able to take Featherpaw to her appointments without having to take three newborns with them. She needs to figure out how to look in the bathroom mirror.
The extra set of hands seems most feasible.

We can do a grocery store run for you.
Mistyfoot has gone food shopping exactly once since they’ve gotten back, and she’s glad she had the sense to make it a major trip. None of them liked it.
But – picking up food means Stonefur has to drop it off, means she has to give him their address.
It’s not that she doesn’t think he’s her brother. She knows he is, the same way she knows she would die before she let Tigerstar within a mile of Featherpaw. But that’s the problem, fundamentally.
She opens the banking app. Her old account was drained, and she doubts she’ll ever get that money back. What she has now is what was donated, and it won’t last long. Three months, if she’s careful. Three months, and then she needs to figure out how to leave Featherpaw with a stranger, figure out how to let a stranger into their house, figure out how to convince Featherpaw that she’ll come back no matter what.
She’ll be lucky if it does last three months.
Featherpaw sighs softly. Her cheek rests on Mistyfoot’s stomach, her hair spilling over the bed.
