"Nothing More Deceptive Than An Obvious Fact"

Summary:

The almighty Arataki Itto has landed himself in jail once again--but this time for murder. Someone has framed Itto for murder and all the facts quite clearly point towards him, so the Tenryo Comission has no choice but to lock him up for good. Knowing very well of his past misdemeanors, no one in the commission looks twice at the case. Even Shinobu can’t get Itto out of this one, so out of desperation, a gang member goes to the Bantan Sango Detective Agency, but they can’t pay the hefty fee for the case. Dejected, they wonder what else to do before Itto gets sent away to prison, but a young man declares that he, the genius detective Shikanoin Heizou, will take the case.

Or: Heizou helps prove Itto's innocence.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Notes:

This is my first Genshin fic so I was a bit nervous to write this, but here it is! I've been very impatiently waiting for Heizou, so I had to write something to hold me over. Hopefully this fic will be decent enough :')

Chapter Text

“Did you hear?! The boss got arrested again!”

Shinobu sighed exasperatedly and ran a hand down her tired face. “What did he do this time? Let me guess--he was hanging up flyers again?”

Akira, Mamoru, and Genta looked at each other nervously. “You tell her,” Mamoru whispered to Genta, fiddling his hands.

Shinobu raised an eyebrow and awaited an answer, hand on her hip. “Well?”

Genta looked like he’d rather be anywhere but here, but he took a deep breath and met Shinobu’s gaze. “He…Uh…He kind of…”

“...Got charged with murder…” Akira finished off abruptly. “ We know the boss is innocent, but--”

“WHAT?!” Shinobu exclaimed, eyes widening. Then she groaned and shook her head. Yelling at her fellow gang members wouldn’t do any good right now. “Let’s go to the Police Station so I can try to get him out of this. You can explain what happened on the way.”

---

His day started out just like any other, boring and predictable. The Tenryou Commission had plenty of work for him to do, as per usual, but since none of it interested him, he was currently “slacking off,” as his dear colleague Kujou Sara liked to say.

Shikanoin Heizou was currently walking along the docks of Ritou, humming with his head turned up to the sky. The Commission had plenty of smaller cases for him to work on right now, but they were all boringly simple. Why they thought he should waste his time with such trivial matters, he’d never know. Finding hidden, stolen goods that a criminal wouldn’t reveal the location of; determining where a very elusive thief would strike next; things like that. Matters so small that it felt almost like an insult that he was asked to get involved with these so-called “cases”. He needed something new, something big, something exciting

Much to the extreme annoyance of everyone who knew him and worked with him, Heizou had a hard time taking anything seriously unless he was personally interested in it. Though he could solve much of what the Tenryou Commission gave him to work on in minutes flat, he’d put it off until it was strictly demanded of him. As he liked to say, “Any one of you would take weeks to solve this, so you can wait a few days from me. What’s the rush?”

He was constantly at odds with others due to his seemingly careless and often rude nature, but he didn’t mind. It wasn’t like anyone could push him away, they would all be useless without him. No one could argue with the results he produced.

In the back of his mind, Heizou already knew where the stolen goods were and where the thief would strike next. A brilliant mind such as his was capable of unconsciously piecing information together (for the painfully simple cases, at least), so that when the time came for him to reveal all, he’d have the answers without even really consciously thinking about it.

“Boring, boring, boring,” Heizou sighed, shoving his hands in his pockets. He’d been so lost in thought that he hadn’t realized that he was now standing feet away from the Bantan Sango Detective Agency.

Ah, Detective Sango. She liked to say that Heizou wasn’t a real detective, due to his many unconventional methods. Well, that’s what she claimed—Heizou figured a great portion of her dislike of him was based more on his personality than his methods.

He wondered if she’d gotten any interesting cases lately…Probably not. Though she occasionally dealt with more serious crimes, it seemed like most people came to her for lost pets or martial investigations these days. Unlike him, she was more than happy to take those cases for the right price.

But unlike her, Heizou didn’t always make people pay for his services. The Tenryou Commission always had to pay him, of course, but when potential clients came to him with interesting enough cases, just the fun of a real investigation was payment enough for him. Besides, at his age, he didn’t care too much for money. He made enough working for the Commission, he didn’t need any mora from the side cases.

Honestly, he didn’t really care about the mora at all. He took an interest in crime for the fun of it. He considered it more of a hobby than a job, though he was every bit the genius detective he claimed to be.

Heizou kicked a pebble and watched it roll down the street. If nothing interesting caught his attention soon, he might actually be desperate enough to work on the stuff Kujou Sara assigned him.

—-

Shinobu paced around the small office in the Police Station, trying to stay calm. She was usually great at being professional in these types of situations, but this was too much.

“You’ll be able to get the boss out of jail like usual, right?!” Akira asked hopefully, hands pressed together.

Shinobu sighed and slumped her shoulders. “I’m not going to lie, things aren’t looking great. It’s going to take a lot more to get him out this time.”

Genta wanted to believe that that wasn’t true, but he heard what that tengu Kujou Sara said too. It was bad, really, really bad. Things were looking hopeless for Itto. He was charged with murder, and even though no one had distincly seen him, there were multiple pieces of evidence that suggest that he did indeed commit the grave crime. Strong pieces of evidence that even Kuki Shinobu would find exceedingly difficult to refute. It was looking like Itto would be locked up for a very, very long time.

But maybe…Maybe someone well-versed in the law (like Shinobu) wasn’t who they needed right now. Maybe they needed someone else’s help, someone who could prove the Tenryou Commission wrong about Itto.

Inazuma City was famous for its masterful detectives, after all.

“I-I have to go,” Genta said suddenly. He ignored Shinobu and the others calling after him as he quickly left the Police Station. He was headed for the Bantan Sango Detective Agency.

---

“I’m really sorry, but if you can’t pay the fee, I can’t help you,” Detective Sango said, a slight frown on her face.

“Are you sure you can’t lower the price just a little bit ?” Genta pleaded. He didn’t have much mora, no one in the gang really did, but the only way they were going to get Itto out of trouble at this point was with the help of a detective.

Sango shook her head and crossed her arms. “It’s like I said, this would be a difficult case and our difficult cases are always more expensive. We can’t make any exceptions. If you come back with more mora, I’d be more than happy to take the case.”

Genta hung his head in defeat. There was no way he’d be able to round up enough mora for this. Even if he asked everyone in the gang to contribute to the fee, he doubted they’d have even half the amount they needed. This was hopeless, completely, utterly hopeless.

“I’ll-I’ll see what I can do,” he muttered. Without another word, he walked away, trying to wrack his mind for another plan. There had to be something else they could do.

Genta turned around the corner, deciding to meet the others and see if Shinobu had any better ideas, but then yelped in alarm as he crashed into someone also rounding the corner. “Hey! Watch where you’re--”

“You just came from Sango’s little detective agency, didn’t you?” the stranger asked as soon as the two stepped apart from each other.

Genta’s brows furrowed in confusion. “I--”

“And let me guess.” The stranger smirked, which only made this little encounter all the more confusing. What was with this guy? Well, kid more like. He couldn’t have been older than what, 15? 16? “You couldn’t afford whatever price Sango named, so now you’re wondering what to do. Well worry not! I, Shikanoin Heizou, will take your case.”

Notes:

I am a huge, HUGE fan of genius detectives and all things mystery, so naturally I've already become obsessed with Heizou. I am not, however, a professional mystery writer, so we'll see how this works out XD

Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Summary:

Genta is confused.

Notes:

Sorryyyyyy it took me forever to get this second chapter out!!! I've written LOTS of fanfiction before, but for some reason, Genshin stuff is extra tricky for me to write. I'm kinda in "the zone" rn though, so hopefully the next chapter(s) won't take so long to get out!!!

Also, just a reminder that I started writing this BEFORE Shikanoin Heizou's release, and this is my first time writing any sort of Genshin fanfiction, so some things might be slightly ooc. I'm trying my best here though, and I hope you guys will be able to enjoy the story regardless!

Chapter Text

“Who?” Genta stared blankly at the stranger who just declared himself to be ‘Shikanoin Heizou’.

A small smirk came to Heizou’s face. “I’m a detective with the Tenryou Commission,” he replied simply.

The Tenryou Commission? But…Weren’t they the ones who locked Arataki Itto up in the first place? Why would one of their detectives suddenly be willing to help after refusing to take the boss’ case any further? Then there was the matter of mora—the commission would expect to be paid, of course—

“Ah-ah-ah,” Heizou said, waving a finger. “I can see that look on your face. Don’t worry, I’m not asking for mora. I’m also not technically with the commission on this one. This is more…a matter of personal interest.”

Yet again, Genta was left staring blankly at the detective. “Personal interest? What do you mean?”

“So you really don’t recognize me?” There was a few moment’s pause from the detective. Then, “I sometimes bring Arataki Itto roasted lavender melons when he’s stuck in a cell. He’s a mischief maker, that’s for sure, but he’s no murderer. I don’t even need my intuition to tell me that something’s not right here.”

Oh. Oh ! He thought he looked a little familiar. Genta didn’t think he’d ever actually spoken to Detective Shikanoin, but now that he thought about it, he had seen him around Itto before. And Shinobu too, for that matter.

“Good, so you’re on our side!” A relieved grin came to Genta’s face. “Do you really think you can get our boss out of jail?”

“I’m positive,” the detective replied matter-of-factly, a confident grin on his face. Then a sort of odd thing happened. His expression slowly changed, morphing into one that was a mix of frustration and disappointment. “I’m just sorry it's even come to this…I should have stopped this long before Itto ever got caught up in this mess.” Heizou clenched his fists fiercely tight, then unclenched them.  When he did, Genta could see the imprints of his fingernails on his hands.

“What do you mean?” Genta asked, a very puzzled expression coming to his face. “Long before he got caught up in this? The murder happened just last night! The boss got arrested this morning.”

Heizou shook his head. “Though the others in the commission refuse to believe this was a set-up, Itto was clearly framed, which means that someone was planning this for quite some time.” He paused for a moment as his eyes fell to the ground. He looked almost…ashamed? “I should have seen it coming, or at the very least, my reputation should have stopped them from even thinking about committing a crime.”

“Yeah, I…Still don’t get it,” Genta said, staring at the detective like there was something on his face. “There’s thousands of people just in Inazuma City! How were you supposed to see this coming? And why would your reputation stop anyone from committing a crime?”

The detective’s shoulders straightened a little. “I aim to be evil’s natural enemy. I work to solve the most difficult of cases so every criminal in the city and beyond knows there’s no chance of getting away with a crime. Already, my name has spread.” He sighed exasperatedly. “But of course, there’s always those who think too highly of themselves. They think they’re invincible, or that nothing bad will ever happen to them because it hasn’t before. Pride or disillusion gets in the way, and suddenly they think that even though many others have been caught, they’re the one clever enough to get away.”

A part of Genta wondered if Shikanoin Heizou was the disillusioned one here. How could any one person think they could just…end crime in the city with their reputation alone? Even if he was super smart or whatever, even he knew that it seemed like a very, very far-fetched goal. It didn’t make sense for him to somehow put a stop to a crime that had never even been committed. But he didn’t comment on that, there’s no way he’d contradict the only detective who was actually willing to look into Itto’s case.

“Okay…Um, well, do you have any leads on the Boss’ case?”

“A few, but I’ll have to look into them further to see if they’re worth anything. It’s strange, you know.”

Genta’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “What’s strange?”

Shikanoin Heizou met his eyes, his gaze locked into place. He suddenly seemed more serious than before, and even a little intimidating. “There’s obvious holes in the case, ones that even the least intelligent Doushin should have been able to see. Still, no one even questioned Arataki Itto being the culprit.”

“Wha-what?! Seriously?” Genta exclaimed, feeling very defensive of his boss all of a sudden. “Are you saying that they just turned a blind eye to this? Is it because of his--our past offences?”

“That thought briefly occurred to me, but everyone in the commission knows that none of his offences have ever been serious. It wouldn’t make sense for them to so easily believe that he would suddenly do something as drastic as commit murder. Anyone who’s met him before should know that it doesn’t add up.” Heizou shrugged. “Of course, even good people are capable of violent acts, so I would understand if they simply suspected him, but to full-out arrest him without even starting a real investigation? It’s a bit odd, don’t you think?”

“I-I guess,” Genta replied, rubbing his neck awkwardly. He had no idea how all of this detective/Tenryou Commission stuff worked. But Shikanoin did have a point--anyone who’d spent a lick of time with Itto before would’ve known that something like this was greatly out of character for him. He and the other gang members didn’t think too much about it before. Sure, they were angry at the Commission for arresting Itto, and they were mad that no one would give them a full account of what happened, but…Well, knowing Itto better than anyone else, Genta and the other gang members knew fully well that their boss was framed. There was no question about it. And they’d heard of others being framed before, but for the Commission to not even put up a real investigation for this? Yeah, that was definitely odd. Hmm…

“Wait--” Genta’s eyes widened. “You don’t think someone in the commission had something to do with this, do you?”

“I don’t know. I don’t want to think badly of my co-workers, or be suspicious of them, but there’s a very real chance one of them could be involved somehow.”

Again, an unreadable look crossed the detective’s face, as he stayed silent for a few moments. Genta got the feeling that there was something Detective Shikanoin wasn’t sharing. That was fine with him though, he didn’t need to know all of the facts or theories floating around in the other’s head. He only needed his friend…er, boss…free of the homicide charge.

“You’ll do it though?” his voice dropped down to a whisper. “Even if this could get someone you might know in trouble, you’ll really take our boss’ case?”

“Of course,” Shikanoin said back, a look of determination on his face. “Regardless of who’s responsible, I’ll get to the bottom of this, that I promise you. Be careful not to mention any of what we discussed to anyone else though, like I said, these are only suspicions. My intuition tells me that this case won’t be as simple as we might think.”

Then, just as quickly as the flip of a switch, an easy grin came to Heizou’s face. “Well, see you later then.” The doushin turned around and raised a hand. “Let me know if you discover anything, alright?” His arm lowered, and Genta watched, baffled, as the young man walked away, his hands sliding into his pockets.

How did he do that? He was so serious only a few seconds ago, but now he seemed more relaxed than ever. That detective was a strange one, that was for sure.

“That was…interesting.” He had to go tell Shinobu about this. He couldn’t wait to tell the good news to the gang--that someone was actually willing to help them out with this. Things felt so hopeless earlier this morning, when they found out what happened with Itto, but now…Now he knew there was still hope.

“I hope you mean it, Detective Shikanoin Heizou,” Genta muttered to himself as the doushin vanished from sight. “That you can get Itto out of jail. Besides us, I think you’re the only one who cares.” If Heizou couldn’t help them, he wasn’t sure anyone could.

Notes:

Next chapter (and most chapters to come) will be in Heizou's (still third person) POV, so fear not! This is, after all, meant to be a Heizou-centric fic. If you're liking this so far, please consider leaving a comment! Comments seriously help motivate me to write more :P
