Charon never thought he would hate the silence, but that’s changing the longer he sits in this hotel room.
He brought Hermes into the hospital after he started complaining about abdominal pain. Hermes didn’t want to go at first, but the longer the night went on, the more the pain started to build. Hermes had finally relented when Charon pressed on his side and Hermes was in more pain when he took his hand away.
The doctors had assessed him and taken him away for surgery immediately after. Now Charon is sitting next to a sleeping Hermes, waiting for him to wake up from the anesthesia.
“He should wake up soon, Charon!” Hypnos cheered from where he was curled up in a hospital chair. Once Charon had let the twins know that he was taking Hermes to the hospital, Hypnos immediately offered to keep him company, knowing how anxious and worried his brother could get.
Charon sighed, but nodded his head. It was a fairly standard procedure, and took little over an hour to do. The doctor said there had been no complications and that Hermes would wake up just fine, and would be back to his usual self once he was healed.
But that doesn’t stop the thoughts running through his head. What if he didn’t push Hermes to go to the hospital? What if Hermes insisted he just take Advil and go to bed? Would he be in worse condition? Would he even have made it through?
Before he could continue spiraling, there was a groan. Charon snapped his head over to where his husband laid.
Hermes was slowly turning his head, squinting in the way he does when he first wakes up. Charon always thought it was charming, that the man who so loves living life seemed angry to wake up every morning. Slowly, he opened his eyes and slowly scanned the room.
“Hermes! You’ve woken up!” Hypnos cheered. “Next time, give us a little warning before your appendix begins to rupture, k?”
Hermes looked over at Hypnos for a few seconds, seemingly trying to gather his surroundings. Without responding to Hypnos, he turned his head towards Charon. As soon as they made eye contact, Hermes froze, staring up at him.
“Oh,” he sighed, voice scratchy from lack of use. “Hello there.”
[How are you feeling?] Charon signed. He knew he had to call the nurse but he wasn’t sure if it was urgent or not.
Hermes ignored him. “What’s your name, handsome?”
Charon raised an eyebrow. Before he could respond, Hypnos let out a laugh.
“His name is Charon!”
“Charon,” Hermes slurred, his head rolling on the pillow. He said his name three more times, stressing the syllables in his name differently each time, before turning back to Charon with the widest smile. “I love your name. Your eyes are so..so… beautiful .”
Charon just stared at Hermes, unsure how to respond. Obviously he was experiencing some memory loss from the surgery, but was he supposed to? Was this normal?
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Hypnos pull out his phone. He shot his brother a glare, but before he could scold him, Hermes kept talking.
“You’re really the silent type, huh?” His smile got wider. “I love that, but I would love to hear your voice. Are you single? I’d love to take you out on a date.”
[I have a husband] Charon replied. Not the best reply, but what does one reply in the moment? When your husband asks you on a date when he doesn’t know who you are.
“Do you like your husband?” Oh my god, how did Hermes stay alive before he and Charon got together.
Charon closed his eyes to compose himself while Hypnos started laughing in the background. Hermes, unfettered by Charon’s silence, continues. “I’m not asking you to cheat, but I’m just saying, I drive a reeeally nice car—”
[You’re my husband] Charon cuts him off, not wanting to hear his husband's plans on how to get Charon to cheat on him, with him. Seriously, is this normal? Should he call the nurse?
Hermes jaw drops as he stares at Charon in shock.
“Really?! You’re my husband?” Charon nodded his head, motioning for Hermes to lower his voice.
Hermes didn’t seem to care. “I got to marry someone as hot as you! Oh my god!” He threw his head back on the pillow staring at the ceiling with a wide smile. “Aphrodite won’t believe it! I bet you Dionysus is gonna be so jealous! Oh, wait, have you met Artemis?” he asked, suddenly serious. “We didn’t get married without Artemis liking you, right?”
[Artemis gave her full approval and helped you plan the wedding] Charon assured. Hermes’ smile somehow got even wider.
“Oh man, this is so great. I am the luckiest man alive!”
Charon is sure he is blushing by now, but he keeps a straight face. He doesn’t want to indulge the memory loss, but he can’t say that he isn’t charmed by knowing his husband thinks he is attractive.
“When did we get married? Did we date long? Do we have kids? I don’t know if I would like raising kids but with you , I would be open to negotiations.”
[We dated for 4 years, got married last year, and no, we don’t have kids] Charon answered. [We haven’t even discussed having children]
“We would have the cutest kids,” Hermes replied, now seemingly caught up on this tirade. “Anyone who is related to you would be cute as shit.”
“I’ll take a compliment when I can get one,” Hypnos pipes up from where he is. Hermes turns his head and squints at Hypnos, as if trying to figure out who he is.
“Hypnos?” he asks.
“Ah, so you’re getting your memory back! Good.”
[Call the nurse to check up on him] Charon told Hypnos, who immediately pouted.
“Aw, but this is so fun!”
[His memory is coming back, so the fun is about to end]. Hypnos sighs dramatically and steps out of the room to find their nurse.
“You’re staying!” Hermes cheered.
[I will stay as long as you want me to] Charon assured him. Hermes grabbed one of his hands as he finished signing and pulling it to his chest.
“Forever, then.”

“Awww, why not?”
[It’ll embarrass Hermes! He tried to convince me to cheat on my non-existent husband with him!]
“It’ll be funny!”
[Hypnos. No.]
“Fiiiiine, I won’t post it. Party pooper.”
