bringgggggggggggggggggg
Higuchi swore violently at the phone vibrating in her coat pocket. Her burner phone sat in her pants pocket, so that would mean it was her personal ringing, and the only person she had as a contact was-
bringgggggggggggggggggg
She shot off another round before ducking behind a stack of shipping crates, unzipping the pockets with fumbling fingers.
bringgggggggggggggggggg
A bullet whizzed by Higuchi's head as she pressed the green button, putting it up to her ear as she peeked back out at her targets.
“I’m on a mission right now.” Her tone was light and casual, but she was huffing with exertion. Couldn't this call have been postponed until even ten minutes later?
“I know,” Was the unhurried response, and Higuchi rolled her eyes as her shot hit true. Akutagawa was on the other side of the warehouse, extracting information, and she needed to divert an entire mass of men from him. Annoying, but nothing she couldn’t handle. While on the phone, though? She was good, but yikes. Not a miracle worker. She should just hang up.
“What do you need?” She asked, not hanging up.
“I’m hungry. And tired.”
Higuchi sighed, reaching an arm over her head to fire a shot at the idiot trying to backstab her. “Alright..”
“And my heating pad is lukewarm.”
“You can microwave it again, darling. I got the reusable one, remember?” Akutagawa made brief eye contact with her from across the swarm of bodies, a disapproving glance tossed towards her phone. In response, she flashed the contact name in his direction, and he turned away with an eyeroll. Well, his best attempt at one. She suppressed a chuckle.
“But the microwave is in the kitchen. I’m in the bedroom. That’s at least fourteen steps, ‘Guchi.”
“Why’d you call me, then?”
“Because you could heat it up for me. And feed me. I’m hungry.” The voice was just so pitiful, Higuchi entertained the thought of ditching Akutagawa completely. He’d probably understand. Wouldn’t he?
“Yes, dear, you mentioned that,” She said instead. “Do you want me to pick up something on my way home? Or would you rather I make something there?”
“Mmm, pick something up. Please.”
Higuchi huffed. “Alright. I don’t know how long I’ll be, though. This may take awhile.”
“Ryuu can handle it. I’m more important than him. If it really goes wrong, he has backup on speeddial.”
Well, that was perfectly sound reasoning. Was Higuchi influenced by her inner desires? Yes, most likely, but she was weak, especially for her lover. “Okay. Let me wrap things up here and we’ll see from there, okay? I'll be home soon.”
“Ahh, I love you.”
“I love you too.” With that, Higuchi reloaded the clip (finally two hands free!) and made her way across her handiwork towards Akutagawa.
He didn’t bother looking up, rather scoffing. “Whatever,” He grunted, and Higuchi took that as permission enough. As she waltzed out of the warehouse, she gestured for Tachihara to take over for her, even tossing him a gun. He gave her a dirty look but obeyed anyway, which made her snicker. He’d do anything for Gin.
Higuchi sped home without issue, bypassing the extensive security system of Mafia apartments. Her limbs were heavy from the physical strain of work, but it was worth the extra benefits. Specifically the oversized flat screen TV and telltale scent of jasmine incense permeating the air.
She toed off her loafers at the entrance and padded towards the bedroom, turning on the softer lights as she went. The depressive atmosphere was doing no one favors.
Higuchi smiled when the lump of blankets came into view, and couldn’t help but poke a finger at it. The lump shuffled a bit, rolling away from the annoyance.
“Gin, honey, I brought curry. You want curry?”
The lump groaned.
“Where’s your heating pad?” Higuchi scanned over the covers.
A hand emerged from the blankets with the crumpled little pack, and Higuchi made quick work of heating it back up again and fetching silverware. When she got back, the lump hadn’t moved, and she sighed with exasperation.
“Here, Gin, sit up,” She guided the lump so it leaned against the headboard. When it was properly situated, the peeled the top of the blankets down to reveal a familiar, disheveled head. She couldn’t resist leaning in to place a kiss on the crown of her head.
“You good to eat, sweetheart?”
Gin grumbled her reply, “I think I’d be a bit tough. Lots of muscle, you know.”
Higuchi hummed. It was good to see that Gin was coherent enough to banter, at least. “I love your muscle,”
“I got most of it from beating up Tachihara.” Higuchi chuckled, and pulled out the curry containers for Gin’s easy access. Their white comforter would surely suffer, but that was going to be Gin’s issue when she felt better. She was the messy one, after all.
Higuchi slid the heating pad under the covers and tucked it into the waistband of Gin’s pajamas, looking up to gauge Gin’s reactions. “Too hot?”
“No, it’s perfect temperature,” Gin moaned. “Why didn’t we buy one of these sooner?”
“They’re about as much as a single paycheck.”
“Ah.”
Higuchi shimmied her way under the covers, effectively shoving over Gin from her centered spot on the mattress. She received an ‘eep!’ of protest, but Gin relented the moment they made eye contact.
“I missed you,” Gin sighed, dropping her head into Higuchi’s lap. “You’re warm and cozy and squishy.”
“Must be those expensive bath salts you keep buying me,” Higuchi giggled.
Gin shook her head. “Nuh uh. It’s your big ol’ knockers,” She made grabby hands upwards at Higuchi, of which were promptly slapped away.
“Is this you objectifying me?”
“Yes,” Was the immediate response. “I’ll go find some weirdo with a doll ability and shrink you forever. You’d fit in my pocket.”
“I bet Ryuu would be thrilled with that,” Higuchi shook her head. “You, though. That’s just freaky. I regret buying you flowers with your curry.”
Gin lit up. “You bought me flowers?”
“No,” Higuchi snickered. “ Your brother’s going to hold a Ryuu type of grudge against me for the next two weeks, at least. All because you couldn’t go to the kitchen and microwave your heating pad, or get the leftovers I kept in the fridge for you for this exact situation.”
“Hey! That wasn’t all. I also missed you, my beautiful, super strong, caring, adorable, badass, beautiful-”
“You already said beautiful,”
“-girlfriend. I love you so, so, soooooo much that I couldn’t bear to be without you for even a moment.”
“You sound like Mich professing his love for you like, last week.” Higuchi flicked her nose.
Gin spluttered. “That was years ago! You’re really still hanging onto that. What, you jealous?”
“Of him?” Higuchi’s eyebrows raised past her hairline. “Of the guy who pissed himself when we watched The Conjuring? Seriously, even the old man didn’t flinch.”
“Hirotsu has a lot of experience, though. He’s a cultured man.”
“Oh my god, I can’t believe you’re defending that,” Higuchi laughed. “Even Kajii was having a good time, and he still can’t be within two miles of that doctor girl from the Agency.”
“She is kind of scary.”
“Not the point! You still don’t need flowers. Not for this situation, anyway.”
Gin frowned and took a pouty bite of her curry. “You’re just a cheapskate.”
“And you’re just a spoiled brat,” Higuchi countered, and snatched the next bite for herself.
“It’s your fault if I am.”
“I know,” Higuchi hid her smile behind another bite.
(Gin was very shocked when she went to go microwave her pad (by herself!!) and saw a big bouquet of carnations waiting for her.
Higuchi didn’t get in trouble with Akutagawa.)
