Chapter 1: Let's Go Fly a Kite

Chapter Text

The house was quiet for once. Kate didn’t know how. Well she actually did know how. Noah’s best friend Marley was turning 10, so she he was at a birthday party. Julie Tennant offered to hang out with the twins for the day, and Nora had piano lessons and was planning on going to a friend’s house after. Kate just didn’t know how the stars actually all aligned so perfectly to have a calm, quiet, relaxing Saturday afternoon.

She was stretched out in her favorite lounge chair on the back patio, where the sun hit just enough to keep her warm but didn’t make her too hot. She had a tall glass of water on the table next to her, book in hand, enjoying the cool breeze. She didn’t hear the door open, her headphones were drowning out any sounds, but she saw the shadow next to her before she actually saw Lucy. She popped out an earbud and turned to look up at her wife.

“Kate,” was all Lucy said, but she said it in a way that Kate knew she wanted something.

“No.”

“You don’t even know what I was going to ask.”

Kate just wanted to enjoy the few hours of peace that she was going to get before Julie tired of the twin’s antics and dropped them back off, “Whatever it is. No.”

“We have the house to ourselves, maybe I was going to ask about having sex.”

“You weren’t.”

“How do you know?”

“Luce, we’ve had our birth control synced up for how many years now? We just started our periods a few days ago. So even if you were going to ask. No.”

“Well at least I know why you’re being grumpy.”

Kate rolled her eyes at Lucy and laughed at herself. She actually thought she’d get peace and quiet today. She forgot to schedule an activity for Lucy to do as well. Next time she wouldn’t make that mistake. Kate sighed, she knew Lucy wouldn’t go away until she heard her out anyways, “What’s up, Luce?”

Lucy got excited and a wide smile spread across her face, “Well sticking with the theme of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, were you are Grumpy and I’m hHppy, I was thinking what if we took the kids to Disneyland for a family vacation? No Paulette, or other family members, just the six of us…”

Kate blinked and looked around to make sure she wasn’t being punked by Ashton Kutcher. Lucy was joking, right? Kate was trying to process everything Lucy had said. Take the four children. That are 10, 8, 5 and 5. To Disney. Kate realized her jaw was hanging open and shut it quickly and began to shake her head.

Lucy’s smile started to fade, “Kate, I think it could be fun…”

Kate knew that this would not be fun, it would be ice cream stains on t-shirts, and meltdowns from being too hot and feet hurting, and chasing kids running in all different directions.

Lucy was still talking, “…the twins are starting school soon and life is going to get hectic…”

Life is going to get hectic? Earth to Lucy. Life is already hectic.

“…and Noah is about to enter that ‘tween’ phase where she will want nothing to do with us…” Lucy continued.

Okay, Lucy had a valid point there. There wasn’t a lot of time left for Noah to still want to hang out with them.

“…and Nora is obsessed with Moana, even though she hates water, so that’s sort of weird, but they have that Moana ride now…”

Kate finally was able to get a word in, “Nora doesn’t hate water. I just think you want her to hate water.”

“No, no, I’m pretty sure she hates it,” Lucy was waving her arms in the air, “but that’s beside the point. I just think this could be really fun….”

It could be fun. And Lucy was really cute trying to convince her. Kate thought about all the times Lucy did things for her, it was really too many times to count. Nora’s swim lessons, and the boy’s music classes, and Noah’s girl scout camping. Kate would give this to Lucy, as much as she thought of all the negative things that COULD happen, she also knew there were a lot of great memories they would create. If Lucy wanted a family Disney trip, Kate would get on board with it.

Lucy was still talking when Kate finally interrupted her, “Luce.”

“Kate… I just really think…” and she was back at it, fighting her cause, not knowing Kate was about to agree.

“Lucy!” Kate finally said loud enough to get Lucy to stop talking.

Lucy was starting to get frantic, she really wanted to do this, “Kate… please don’t say no.”

Kate smiled at Lucy, “We can take them.”

“Wait,” Lucy was caught off guard. Did Kate Whistler just agree to this?

“We can take them.”

“Just like that?”

“Just like that.”

Lucy’s eyes narrowed, who was this woman? Not her wife. What else was at play here?
She was having a hard time believing this, “What’s the catch?”

Kate laughed, “Babe, there’s no catch.”

Lucy’s mind was going now, Kate used the word ‘babe’ so there was a catch, “I feel like there’s a catch.”

Kate could see the wheels turning in Lucy’s mind so she reached up and grabbed Lucy’s hand and pulled her down onto the chair next to her, “you do a lot for our family and for the kids, so if you want to take them to Disney, we will take them.”

Lucy’s eyes were wide, and her smile had returned. She couldn’t believe this was really happening, “and can we do the character breakfast at the Castle?”

“Luce, you can plan the entire trip, whatever you want to do, we will do it.”

So that was the catch, Lucy had to organize the entire trip. Pfff. She’d take it. Easy Peasy. She would take full advantage, “And can we plan a fun reveal for the kids? Like matching shirts? Or a scavenger hunt? Maybe just tell them on the way to the airport. I have a lot of ideas…”

Kate laughed, she loved watching Lucy like this, all giddy and excited. She knew Lucy was going to be the ‘fun’ parent when the kids were teenagers, but that was okay. They really balanced each other out so well. Kate leaned in and gave Lucy a kiss and pulled back to look her in the eyes, “I love you so much.”

Lucy was a little caught off guard but smiled and leaned in for another kiss deepening it ever so slightly, “you sure we can’t have sex while the kids are out of the house?”

Kate laughed, “I’m sure,” What Kate really wanted was that peace and quiet she had a few minutes ago, so the only catch to this whole Disney thing was going to be sending Lucy to plan for it immediately, “…why don’t you go start planning the trip awhile? And I’ll finish reading page one of my book.”

Lucy smiled, “Yes! Great idea, I’ll go start planning,” Lucy leaned in for another kiss, “Love you.” And she stood up and bounced back inside the house.

Kate took a deep breath, placed her earbud back in her ear, and closed her eyes. She was going to need a lot of rest before this Disney vacation.
