Work Header

sorry about the blood in your mouth, I wish it was mine

Summary:

Her opponent stepped into the ring, lithe and muscled, hair pulled up into a bun. Enna watched her stretch, brow furrowing as a faint wave of recognition washed over her.

Oh shit.

Ever since Enna had joined the boxing circuit, she had a rather famous rivalry with the former light weight champion Reimu Endou, the title swapping hands between them over the years. It had started with mere trash talk, evolved into constant bickering whenever they met, begrudging admiration of each other's talents fueling them to win, to beat the other.

Reimu cracked her neck as she stared at Enna, before her face twitched and her eyes widened. Enna stood silently as she remembered strong arms supporting her drunken form, before she pushed it away, brought her hands up into a simple guard, and waited for the bell.

Work Text:

The music was loud here, heavy bass making the bottles rattle on their shelves. Enna's phone had guided her here, to this night club, and she could feel it buzzing away with texts from her manager demanding for her to get back to her hotel room. She ignored it.

Enna sidled up to the bar, tapping on the counter like people did in movies, and asked for something that wasn't too strong. She looked around as she waited, caught a glimpse of a television on the wall showing an ad for the tournament the next day. The headache Enna was trying so desperately to run away from pulsed in time with the music.

The bartender finally slid Enna's drink over. Enna was pretty sure he hadn't paid attention to the order based on how her first sip burned all the way down. She still ordered another, swirled it around in its glass as she inspected the people around her.

The tension finally melted from her shoulders by the second drink and the thirtieth missed call. Enna hummed to herself as she ordered something new and went to sit in a more comfortable chair in the corner. She'd rather not dance, falling flat on your face and breaking your nose the night before a fight even started was embarrassing.

The room swam as she took a sip from her fruity liquor. The lights were shiny and sharp in the darkness, bioluminescence in how it reflected off everyone's skin. Enna looked at her hands, at the way the muscles moved underneath, the callouses on her palms. Her knuckles were reddened and she had spilled some of her drink onto herself. It trickled down into her lap, stinging the open cuts.

She tried to stand and ended up slamming into someone as the ground beneath her feet wobbled like a top. Enna's stomach did a flip. Someone's hands came up to her shoulders to support them both as they straightened out.

"Are you alright?" The lady Enna had bumped into asked. She was hard to see in the low light, dark coat and pants melding into the shadows of the club. She cut an imposing figure anyhow, shoulders broad even through the thick cut fabric.

"Doing better now that you're here," Enna grinned, eyes not able to focus on the lady's face. She could see she had a stern brow and fine cheekbones, bright eyes too. The rest was a blur of multicolored lights. "Want to dance?"

"I think if you danced, you would fall over and break your neck," The woman said bluntly. Enna was always a sucker for women who got to the point.

"Then what do you say we do?" Enna raised her eyebrow, but judging from how the stranger snorted, she had lifted both instead.

"I say you go home," She took Enna's almost empty glass from her, placing it on a random low table. "I'd rather not be the one who has to go with you in the ambulance."

"And why would you go with me?"

The lady hooked her arm through Enna's, guiding her towards the exit. "Because I'm apparently tipsy enough to think you're worth it."

"Aww," Enna leaned a little bit too far against her when they finally got outside, cool air ruffling her hair as they almost walked into oncoming traffic. "You care." Enna made kissy noises against the woman's arm, embarrassment trapped in a locked room with a steel door to only come out if she ever remembered this moment.

"Oh you're really fucking drunk aren't you?" The girl laughed in disbelief, even as she helped Enna stumble down the street.

"Veeeery, pretty girl," Enna grinned, head lolling on its axis to turn towards her newfound companion. "Would you like to join me?"

"I'm surprised you can still talk," She raised an eyebrow before hoisting Enna up into her arms, moving much faster now. "You're absolutely shit faced."

"You can sit on my face anytime, baby girl," Enna nuzzled into the folds of her dress. She smelled like vanilla and something spicy. Her arms were toned and well muscled, and a large scar trailed down her forearm. Enna traced it with a fingertip, even as she squinted from the bright headlights of a passing car.

"Why am I doing this again?" The woman asked herself. She walked into an unfamiliar hotel, a rather fancy one by Enna's experience, and led them to the elevators.

It was fortunately empty, so Enna leaned against the wall until she was sitting down on the ground, slacks wrinkled slightly. Her hands smelled like the counter of the bar; spilled alcohol.

"Where'r we goin'?" Enna pressed the side of her temple to the cool metal wall of the elevator, sighing in relief at the feeling.

"I don't know where your place is," She checked her phone, smoothed down the fabric of her coat. "And for all I know, you could be faking this to get me somewhere-"

"Wouldn't 't be the other way 'round?" Enna closed her eyes as the overhead lights became a bit much. The elevator continued to rise. "Since I'm drunk and vulnerable and subject to your lecherous whims and wiles?" She threw an arm over her face for emphasis, but her giggles ruined it.

The woman chuckled and tried to disguise it as a cough. "You are very irritating, did you know that?"

"And you," Enna leaned forward, putting on her best smile, "are very pretty, did you know that?"

"You are drunk," The elevator chimed as the doors slid open. Darkness crowded Enna's vision as soon as she stood, and the even darker floor began to rush towards her face. "I don't listen to- oh shit you're falling-"

Enna woke up. It was an abrupt awakening, as if her brain finally registered the fact that the bed she was lying in was unfamiliar and way more comfortable than the one she had in her current hotel. It was dark outside, city lights still twinkling through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

This definitely wasn't her hotel room.

The sheets were soft as she slid out of the tangle of them, padding on soft carpet to the adjoining bathroom to splash water on her face. Then Enna went to the living room/kitchen area. There was a lump on the couch, rising and falling, light snores coming from it. Probably the stranger from last night, Enna deduced.

The microwave's LED clock read four am. Her phone was plugged into the wall and- blessedly- put on silent. Enna quickly unlocked it, rushing out of the hotel room with the phone held to her ear, water still dripping from her hair.

Her manager was so used to her antics by this point that her rant to Enna finally finished by the half hour point. By then, Enna was back at her own hotel room and had already downed a water and a Tylenol for her raging hangover.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry," Enna's phone was held between her head and shoulder as she moved around her kitchen, making her trusty post night out breakfast of eggs and bacon. "I'll be there early so you can yell at me more." Enna hung up the phone, placing it down on the counter and burying her head in her hands.

The blessed relief of last night was fading away fast, as anxiety began to make itself known again. Her match was in five hours, and she had to be there in two. Enna scarfed her breakfast down, pulled on a sweatshirt and comfy pants, and went out to run.

It was cool out, and barely anybody was on the streets, which was pretty normal for six am. Enna jogged down the sidewalk, music blasting in her ears, the occasional honking of cars heard through the drone. The air stung in her lungs, her muscles felt pleasantly loose, and she felt the world slip away as she focused on the next traffic light, then the next, running through intersection by intersection until she finally reached the park.

She slowed down then, shook her arms out and cracked her knuckles. Enna winced as her thumb twinged, an injury from the last fight. She slumped on a park bench to take a breather, leaning her head back to stare at the sky.

It was cloudy and overcast, so maybe it would rain later. Enna liked running in the rain; stepping in puddles made her feel like a kid again. A man walking his dog passed by, head down and shoulders slumped as he wandered. Enna watched his retreating back go down the winding park path, and when he was gone she stood back up.

Her manager was calling again.

Enna sat in the chair, skin slick from Vaseline, staring at the other end of the ring. She could hear the crowd's low rumbling drone, flexed her fingers as best she could in her gloves. Her trainer was saying something, but she couldn't hear their words very well, so she just nodded occasionally.

"I'm never going to help you again," Reimu threw her hands up in the air, stalking around the room like an irritated predator. Enna tried desperately to not seem like prey, straightening her back and tilting her chin up.

"Excellent idea," Enna said sarcastically. "Then maybe you should stop being so bad at everything, that always helps me."

Reimu stopped pacing, turning to glare at Enna. "That doesn't make any sense, bitch."

"Auditory comprehension is another thing you have to work on, I see-" Enna cut off as Reimu moved toward her, backing her up until Enna was pressed against a wall and a rather angry buff lady. Not the worst place to be.

"I think you should stop talking," Reimu tilted her head to the side, crossing her arms. "Unless you want to get punched in the face again."

The bruise on Enna's temple throbbed at her words, but she still grinned. "But I love talking. I love talking so much that I'm going to keep doing it. Because you can't possibly think punching me is going to shut me-"

Enna was cut off once more when Reimu kissed her. Hard. Fingers dug into Enna's shoulders as Reimu bit into her lower lip, tugged, breathed minty mouthwash against her mouth.

"Fuck you," Reimu hissed against her neck, biting and licking over the marks before moving back up to Enna's lips to kiss her hungrily. "I fucking hate you."

"Then stop kissing me bitch," Enna raised an eyebrow, lips shiny from spit, bruises on her ribs aching slightly. She ignored it to wind one hand into Reimu's hair, pulling her back to her mouth.

They moved along the wall, Reimu hissing when her hip banged into the table. They were kissing against that then, moved to the chair when Reimu regained control, Enna straddling her lap and guiding her hands to her hips.

"We should move somewhere else," Enna gasped as Reimu licked her ear.

"Probably," Reimu agreed. Then Enna kissed her again.
