The hotel apparently had only one room left when Enna asked. It had a single bathroom, one window with a shitty view of the parking lot, an indescribably green couch, a small kitchenette and a minuscule tv. And one bed. That was the part that Enna had forgotten to ask about.
Millie threw her bag down on the couch before slumping atop it, groaning as it jabbed into her ribs. "I'll take the couch."
"No I'll take the couch, dork," Enna put their drinks into the mini fridge, stretching as she looked around the room. "This is my fault."
"Or we could both take the couch," Millie offered, flicking through the television channels.
"Or we could both take the bed."
Millie stared at Enna who shrugged. "Like both of us could fit on the couch anyways, Millie. Use your brain."
"Nothing there babu," Millie grinned, lounging on the couch and taking all the available space on the lumpy cushions. Her shirt rode up a little, and Enna's eyes flicked down to the stripe of milky skin before quickly looking away. "Guess we'll share the bed."
There was a movie playing in the background as Enna scrolled on her phone beside Millie. Their bags were shoved in a corner, take out still littered the top of the tiny kitchen table. Millie had never been so aware of the space between them before. Enna's leg brushed her own when she leaned forward to grab her drink off of the coffee table, head tilting up to take a sip. Millie's eyes traced the curve of her neck, down to where a hint of collarbone was flashed from underneath the collar of her shirt. She looked away.
She honestly did not know what the plot of the film was, something about mechas and such. Millie had probably watched it before. Enna moved to throw her drink away, leaving her phone on the couch. She was texting Elira something, and Millie glanced at it for a second. She read her own name. Something cold trickled down her ribs. Millie wrapped her arms tightly around herself and tried to pay attention to the movie.
Enna got ready for bed slowly, knowing that Millie was already lying in bed waiting for her to turn the bathroom light off. Her cheeks burned as she brushed her teeth. Enna refused to look in the mirror.
She turned off the light behind her, padding over and feeling the horrible sensation of the hotel's shitty carpet on her bare feet. Enna was glad when she was finally able to slide into bed, body aching from the day. Her pillow was rough and became limp as soon as Enna rested her head on it.
It was dark in the room, which Enna was grateful for. She didn't have to see Millie's face next to her. But then Millie rolled onto her side, poking at Enna's shoulder.
"Are you awake?" She whispered.
Enna let out a long suffering sigh. "I just laid down, Millie."
"Well I don't know, Elira falls asleep everywhere really fast."
"I'm not Elira." Something in Enna's chest stung at the admission.
"I know that."
They lay there together, in the dark.
"Have you ever kissed anyone?" Enna asked the shadows on the ceiling.
"No," Millie answered. "You?"
Enna laughed mirthlessly. "Does my hand count?"
"Why would you kiss your hand?" Millie propped her head up on an elbow, watching Enna. She could feel the witch's eyes on her body, hoping the sheets would hide the shiver that ran through her.
"Practice."
"A hand doesn't count as practice," Enna could hear Millie's eyes rolling in their sockets. A beat. Another. "Do you want to practice?"
"Practice what?"
"Kissing."
"With you?"
"Yeah, obviously," Millie snorted. "I don't want to watch you kiss your hand."
"The true cuckening."
Millie laughed, and Enna luxuriated in the sound.
"Well?"
The question rang out in the dark room. Enna felt her mouth go dry. She rolled over to face Millie, scanned her face that was spilled over with shadow for any sign of a lie. Millie looked back at her, face open and questioning.
"Okay."
The sheets rustled as Millie moved forward. Her eyes fluttered shut, eyelashes dark against her cheekbones. Enna's eyes were wide open the whole time, watching her, watching how her own hand moved up to cup Millie's cheek. Her skin was soft and slightly dry. Her hair tickled her knuckles. Enna's eyes finally shut when Millie kissed her.
Millie's lips were soft. Enna could taste toothpaste, the one from the travel tube they had shared. Her lips were chapped and rough, lip balm a faded taste of sugared fruit. Enna wanted to kiss her again to figure out what the taste was. Millie's tongue flicked against her lips and Enna jerked back. Millie's eyes opened, fear writing itself across her features as she opened her mouth to probably apologize, to say sorry over and over again like she usually did.
Enna stopped her from even talking by kissing her again. She tilted her head a little so Millie could reach her lips. She could feel Millie's hand on the back of her head, the back of her neck, always blunt nails scratching her scalp lightly.
When Enna pulled away finally, it felt like she had given something away. Left it on Millie's wet lips, in her mouth.
Millie wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. "Well that was nice," She laughed, a stilted, choked noise. "We did it!"
"We did."
"That didn't mean anything right?"
"Don't think so."
"Hope that didn't awaken anything." Millie laughed again. Dead like the cockroach in the corner of the room that the both of them had ignored in the desperate hopes that it was actually dead.
"Yup."
"Goodnight then, Enna."
"Goodnight." Babu, Enna almost said, but the pet name felt too intimate at the moment.
Millie tried to fall asleep, could hear Enna's almost panicked breathing slow as she rolled back onto her back. Millie closed her eyes, but could only remember Enna's lips on hers the last time they did that. A curse bubbled up in her throat that she swallowed back down. She licked her dry lips, wondered if Enna could taste her lip balm.
The memory of the kiss haunted her until morning. Neither of them had slept a wink.
