Chapter Text
Newkirk stood waiting to meet his contact, “Rapunzel.” The dirt lane where he was standing was empty, and all was quiet except for the sound of the river that was not far from where he stood. He had been waiting for around ten minutes when he suddenly heard footsteps up ahead. He could see a figure approaching, and as they came closer he casually asked, “The weather’s been nice, hasn’t it?”
“I suppose so,” a voice answered, “but I prefer the rain.”
That was the code, but the voice belonged to a woman, and she had an American accent.
“Rapunzel?” Newkirk asked.
“Yes, and you must be Phantom, one of Papa Bear’s men?” she replied.
“Yes.” Newkirk hesitated for a moment, then finally asked, “So, what’s an American girl doing in the middle of Germany during the war?”
“Well, I’m an enlisted man… well woman, just like yourself.”
Newkirk paused for a moment and took a look at his new acquaintance. She was gorgeous alright, and there was something about her that caught his interest. Long, thick curly brown hair, sparkling blue eyes, and a nice smile. She was strong and fit too. He couldn’t believe there was a woman in the U.S. military. Not that he was opposed to such things, of course. But boy, Colonel Hogan was going to be in for a surprise when they got back to camp.
“Shall we head on to Stalag 13 then?” Newkirk finally asked.
“Lead the way,” Rapunzel nodded.
