the row of clear diamonds lined the silver ring that decorated yeonjun’s finger, hands visibly shaking in fear where they tangled in his hair. sitting on the bathroom floor, his shirt covered with stains, he really didn’t know whether it was puke from jeongyeon or his own snot and tears falling from his face.
“yeonnie’s got a fever,” yeonjun said, his voice probably a touch too loud than the situation required, “that means she’s gonna die, right?”
“no, no, no,” kai assured, his arm wrapping yeonjun in toward his chest, “we should take her to the hospital, but i’m sure she’ll be okay.”
yeonjun was always in need of kai’s level head at moments like these. the first three months after bringing jeongyeon home have been the most stressful months of their entire lives, even after their entire career as idols. in this moment, he was sure that they’d lost the thing they’d worked the hardest for, a family.
“we have to go,” yeonjun quickly announced, wiping the tears from his face with the sleeve of his shirt and standing abruptly. the sounds of urgent screams came from the other room, and yeonjun whipped his head toward the noise, eager to be of aid to her pain.
“sweetheart, you are in no state to look after her,” kai interjected, rising to meet yeonjun’s urgent stance, “i’ll go to her, go get a bag ready for us just in case.”
after rolling his eyes, yeonjun knew kai was right. he was always able to see through yeonjun’s facade, whether or not he knew it himself.
with a sigh, yeonjun mumbled, “fine,” and made his way to their shared bedroom.
shit, shit, shit, yeonjun thought, frantically throwing a change of clothes for each of them into the nearest overnight bag, which was already prepped with enough diapers to serve a month’s worth of needs.

“you’re gonna be alright, aren’t you?” kai cooed at jeongyeon, “my strong little princess.”
the infant’s cheeks puffed in a slight smile, still a bright rose from the heat of her fever.

“baby, are you ready to go?” kai walked into their room, jeongyeon neatly tucked into her carrier on his arm.
“oh my god,” yeonjun dropped the bag from his hands when he saw his daughter, “she looks so red.”
“she does have a fever,” kai said, “that’s why we’re going.”
tears began to well up in yeonjun’s eyes yet again, his heart sinking into the pit of his stomach, but he pushed them aside until they safely made their way out to their car. safely strapping jeongyeon into her seat, kai turned to see yeonjun facing away from him, light sniffles slipping from where he was trying to hold them in.
kai knew yeonjun was terrified. he was too, but he had always been better at dealing with the fear after the situation had resolved. gently wrapping his arms around yeonjun’s shaking frame, kai rested his chin on his shoulder. he didn’t say anything, but he didn’t need to. all he needed to be was there.
“i can’t do it,” yeonjun sobbed, “why did i ever think i could be a good parent?”
“you are already the best dad i’ve ever seen,” kai smiled, placing a gentle kiss to yeonjun’s temple in reassurance.
looking up to meet kai’s slightly worried gaze, yeonjun swore he had never felt more in love.
“i couldn’t do it without you.”
