“happy birthday sugarplum,” yeonjun whispered, shaking kai’s shoulder gently.
the clock had just struck midnight moments before. although kai had fallen asleep two hours prior, yeonjun couldn’t miss the opportunity to be the first one to wish him a happy birthday.
“mmmh?” kai’s groan sounded like a question in response to yeonjun’s awakening, not fully coming back to reality just yet.
“you’re twenty,” yeonjun announced quietly as kai rubbed his eyes with his forearm.
“i’m old like you,” kai smiled, reaching out his arms to pull yeonjun next to him in his bed, landing on top of the plushie that was last year’s present.
“fine then, i’ll let the rest of them bombard you instead,” yeonjun pretended to pull away from kai’s grasp, sticking one leg off the bed.
“no, stay,” kai pleaded half-heartedly, using minimal strength to pull the older closer.
being so close for so many years has meant that they had celebrated more than a handful of birthdays together. over recent years, this type of celebration has become more familiar. simple wishes turned into hugs, hugs turned into hours of cuddles, and that subsequently turned into the unarguable fact of newly blossoming love. as the clock turned and the calendar changed, kai’s harmless crush went farther than he ever imagined.
“i wouldn’t dream of leaving,” yeonjun wiped a small speck of sleep dirt from the inner corner of kai’s eye.
“i’m so happy i can spend another one with you.” matching yeonjun’s gaze, kai pressed their lips together gently with an unspoken promise.
