Work Text:

“Nayeon, what the heck?” Jihyo’s voice echoed throughout the room. Her face was completely displeased as soon as she saw Nayeon. Nayeon gave her a small grin and proceeded to play with her newly bleached hair.

Jihyo blew air through her nose aggressively. “No one in 1997 had their hair bleached goddamnit.” Nayeon gave her a high pitched laugh while clapping her hands. “She’ll be a star there, then.” Chaeyoung sat beside Nayeon, teasing Jihyo more.

This trio have been planning to time travel. In this modern world, the year 3001, time travelling is possible. Only highly qualified engineers and scientists can pass through legally and is limited for purely academic work. But that doesn’t stop these three geniuses into being curious and illegally coming back through time.

Over the past 5 years, they have created an exact type of time capsule the government had created. Nayeon suggested adding stickers though, she says to make it look unique.

Nayeon sniffs her nose and pulls her glasses up to her eyes. “I think this is more than ready.” She examined the whole capsule, about the size of a normal phone but without the LED screen and full of pink stickers that Nayeon has stuck on. “Yeah, everything is ready except your hair color.” Jihyo rolled her eyes. “I told you to keep your hair in the shade of black or brown. Why don’t you just listen? Why doesn’t she listen?” She then looked at the youngest in the crew, which was Chaeyoung, who is obviously on Nayeon’s side. Chaeyoung shrugged and gave a smile to Jihyo.

“Okay. ID’s that are fake; check. Xylitol gums because Nayeon can’t live without them and worries that 1997 bubblegums might not suit her taste” Chaeyoung recited, while Jihyo added a side comment “Let me tell you if you can’t have their gum because it doesn’t suit your taste then you’ll starve to death, Nay”

“Shew! Continue, chaengie” Chaeyoung nodded disregarding Jihyo.

“Undergarments. Few clothes. Did I already say ID’s that are fake? Okay. The spare capsule just in case. And another one just for luck. Jellies…”

“Oh. Yeah. That’s for me as well. Thank you.” Nayeon smiled and asked for Chaeyoung to continue again.

“Phones that use the satellite connection. One for each of us; check. Rule for this is that it shouldn’t be used with people around for obvious reasons. Location to time travel to, check. Temporary house to stay there, check.. hopefully no tenants because that will be awkward. That’s about it”

Jihyo sat down opposite of her two colleagues and scanned their belongings once again. “Always remember the rules, okay? The fake stories of us and our history. If ever we landed in different places, the meet up place is in Seoul Central Station and we will wait for each other there no matter how long.” Nayeon sniffs once again and orders everyone to hold hands together. “Here we go. See you 3001, hello 1997.”

With one click in the time capsule, negative space surrounds them. And based on Nayeon’s extensive study about time travelling, what they’re experiencing is normal for time travellers. Hot, humid, intoxicating speed, and down right the worst experience in existence. If she got the calculations right, this experience will last for 30 seconds up to a minute. Number one rule is to not faint while in this situation because God knows what will happen if they do. No one in the books Chaeyoung gathered and read has fainted at all.

Seoul Central Station. At 3am? In 1997? (They hope so.) Nayeon was livid. Thankfully, no one got separated. Although they wished to arrive at the house they picked, at least they were brought back in time together. They did a precautionary measure of checking all their things and it was all there. One last thing is to check what year it was.

Chaeyoung spotted a newspaper from around the corner. “Hey there… How much is the newspaper?” She asked the guy, who looks old like her father and smells heavily of cigarettes. “1 dollar.” So, she paid and walked back to the rest of her friends. “Haven’t looked at it yet. It’s either 1997 or 2001 right?” The calculations for 2001 is that scientists only traveled in the multiples of 100 years back but never 1004 years.

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three!” Chaeyoung opened the newspaper and there was a large, in bold, and in times new roman font that says 1997. The girls screamed in joy and Nayeon mentally high five herself. Her calculations were indeed spot on.

“Let’s go find our house, ladies!”

“Nayeon! Nayeon!!” Chaeyoung called for her from the kitchen. Nayeon sat down in her bed and went to grab her glasses and put them on the bridge of her nose. She walked downstairs and saw Chaeyoung watching the Tv. “What?” She replied after she settled herself on the chair.

“Look! It’s the legendary actress, Chou Tzuyu!” Nayeon could see how Chaeyoung was ecstatic to see her idol. Although 1000 years late, she adores the actress. “Yeah. She’s pretty when she was young. I’ve only seen her at an old age, apparently she stayed in the spotlight until the day she died.” Nayeon told her. Chaeyoung nodded and smiled. “It’s a shame no one in the year 3000’s knew her anymore. She’s truly amazing.”

The door opened revealing Jihyo with her hands occupied with groceries. Nayeon stood up to help her and lay it down on the kitchen table. “I bought mint gum. Try it if it tastes like the xylitol ones you like.” Nayeon then proceeded to open the gum and pop one into her mouth immediately. “Hmm. Mhm. That will do” she says. It’s one of Nayeon’s precautionary measures. She can’t ( can ) live without her xylitol gums. If people are addicted to coffee and cigarettes, she’s addicted to mint gums and jellies.

Jihyo sat down next to Chaeyoung and freely watched the television when one of the greatest scientists ever popped up on the screen. “There it is. Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon. If she knew that time travel is possible, she'd be ecstatic.” Jihyo said, by this time Nayeon has sat down as well. “We could tell her. She’s the one who mentioned that time travelling is possible.” She nonchalantly said. Jihyo and Chaeyoung turned to look at her. “I mean, we can but we also can’t because first, her knowing this could alter the future and we will be fucked… then second is that there is no way to be near her unless we’re some scientists in this era ourselves.” She shrugged and went to the bathroom for a shower. “I still can’t understand her. How does she say something so good and so relevant then proceed to do something else like it’s a normal thing” Jihyo said to Chaeyoung. “Well, that’s normal for her.”

“Ugh. I completely forgot” Nayeon said as she grabbed her bag. “What do we tell people what we do? We’re just a bunch of 25 year olds”, “and 23” Chaeyoung corrected. “Right… but should we apply for college or something? Is 25 years old still okay for college in 1997?”

Jihyo brought her notebook out and opened the page entitled 1997 abouts, histories, rules . She skimmed through it “Supposed to be about uh, first year after graduating college.”

“1997 sucks a little huh? In our year, 25 year olds could be a 10 time renowned best doctor in town already” Chaeyoung shrugged and waited for them. “Bring out the resumés. With those records we could be a manager straight on, don’t you think?”

Nayeon stood there for a second before telling them it’s not needed. “Well, we don’t really need money. So working is kinda eh… and also us getting employed can alter the future. We’re too advanced in this timeline” she said and the two agreed. “So what do we tell them?”

Nayeon smirked. “What are we? Come on. We’re software engineers slash scientists. Of course we would tell them we are programmers that work from home” Jihyo could tell how Nayeon was so proud, so they agreed. “Alright. Programmers indeed”

“Alright then. See you girls later”

Nayeon decided to visit her beloved park near Seoul. If this was the year 3001, this very park would be filled with vendo machines that could give you “home cooked” meals for 2 dollars, crowded with people who dress like those 2012 sci-fi movies because it’s ’trendy’ and vendors who sell random stuff from the “past” which is usually not true. They just made it look old and antique.

But in 1997, this park was not a park. It’s a grass field with a small lake. Nayeon thought that it was maybe under the construction of becoming a park since there are chairs already. The view is still as beautiful as it was a thousand years back. She sat down in the chairs and breathed the air. “Now this is fresh air” she exhaled. The sun was getting hotter as it reached lunch time. One quick pop of mint gum into her mouth and she was set to go. She sniffed and fixed her glasses and stood up.

“Also waiting for the park to be built?” A stranger spoke to her and she tried not to act surprised. “Yeah? Will this be a park?” She asked, not wanting to be suspicious.

“There are chairs. So I assumed it would be a park?” She giggled a little bit. “I’m Nayeon. You, what’s your name?” Nayeon was nervous. This is the first time she interacted with someone. But nothing could go wrong if it’s someone not influential. “I’m Mina. Nice to meet you, Nayeon.” Mina brought her hand out and Nayeon shook it. It was strange. Do people in 1997 still do handshakes?

“Mind to come along with me? I’m starving” she said. Nayeon only gave her a nod then they proceeded to walk together. “So, Mina. What are you doing back there in the unfinished park?” Mina giggled. “Just passing by every day. I don’t know. I like to witness it be built”

Nayeon nodded.

It took them about 30 minutes before coming into a place that apparently sells the best food in Seoul. And ofcourse it was. It's the Kim D Foodie Club. Which is one of the largest franchising restaurants up until year 3001. It was made in 1997 so the delicious goodness of the restaurant comes all the way a thousand years back. “Hey, Dahyun. I want two sets of the special” Mina said as she sat down with ease. “Coming right up”

Nayeon looked at Dahyun closely. She was seeing Kim Dahyun up close, and alive. Not just in pictures and videos. Also to mention that she will eat food that’s been cooked by Kim Dahyun personally.

“Who’s this lovely girl over here?” Dahyun said as she put the special set in front of them. “She’s Nayeon. I met her moments ago at the park.” Dahyun wipes her hands into the cloth that’s stuck in her waist. “A park? Is there one around here?”

Mina nodded. Like she’s excited to tell this to Dahyun. “Yeah! Not a park yet, but it will be” what a strange human being. Nayeon had thought that already. She observed the two and she’s comfortable enough to banter some jokes with them in-between their arguments.

But this is the only time Nayeon would be around here. It’s a shame that she only gets to taste Dahyun’s cooking once. But she has to leave and never go back. She can’t leave an immense influence on Dahyun or the future could change. She has to be extremely careful, Mina included. “That’s really a shame. That Mina girl sounds fantastic” Jihyo said as Nayeon reported her whole day to the other two. “Well, yeah. She seems like she’s fun to be with”

Nayeon sighs. Mina felt like a good friend too, even for just a day. “You have to taste Kim Dahyun’s special set. Can you believe it? One thousand years and her restaurant is still there. Her cooking is far better than the one in our time though” Chaeyoung sat down. “I still remember that news where Chou Tzuyu ate there and that’s the start of the legendary Kim D Foodie club. What year was it again, Jihyo?” She asked and Jihyo sat down trying to remember it. “Wasn’t it June 14, her birthday?”

Nayeon gave her a nod. “1997”

“Wait. What date is it today?” Chaeyoung asked as adrenaline hit her system.

Nayeon smiles and giggles. “It’s the 13th”

“I’m going to see Chou Tzuyu tomorrow!”

-

Chaeyoung was ready to go. Jihyo checked for her that Chou Tzuyu ate there at lunchtime so Chaeyoung’s logic was that lunchtime varies around 11am to 1pm so she would just hide until Chou Tzuyu arrives and then will eat too with Kim Dahyun’s special set. Two birds with one stone!

Nayeon mentally noted in herself that this is the second and last time Dahyun will see and hear of her. Too much Nayeon in Dahyun’s memories is not good. Her blonde hair doesn’t help that much either.

At 12 o’clock, Chou Tzuyu arrived at the venue. The three of them then proceeded to enter as well. Dahyun saw Nayeon first. Damn it. The article before was that Kim Dahyun saw Chou Tzuyu first before everyone else. Jihyo assured her that this little change wouldn’t change as Chou Tzuyu still was the main event in this restaurant.

“Yes, three special sets. Thank you, Dahyun” Nayeon said and Dahyun nodded, excusing herself as she made her way to the actress waiting for her order to be taken.

“What do you recommend, Chef?” Dahyun grinned ear to ear. “Of course it’s the Special Set, Ma’am”

“Then I’ll get one”

Jihyo could notice how Chaeyoung was fidgety and anxious. If Chaeyoung is this anxious, something is definitely planned. She knew Chaeyoung too well. When Chou Tzuyu finished her food, Chaeyoung stood up “Chaeyoung, don’t-“

It was too late. There was Chaeyoung and a candle in her hand. She stood in front of Chou Tzuyu and lit up the candle. “Happy birthday… ma’am”

“I don’t have a cake but birthdays are all about wishes, right?” Chou Tzuyu gave a faint smile before closing her eyes, making a wish.

“Thank you…” “My name is Chaeyoung.” Chou Tzuyu smiled. “Thank you, Chaeyoung.”

Chaeyoung knew what she did but she doesn’t know yet what the consequence will be. “I told you not to leave impressions on influential people! What if the time travellers scientists saw the change in the articles! Goddamnit, Chaeyoung. I told you a hundred times that you don’t make sudden moves like that” Jihyo tirelessly scolded Chaeyoung ¼ of the night. Nayeon stayed quiet because Jihyo was right.

“But in that article she said she was so lonely on her birthday that day she ate at the restaurant. I.. I couldn’t stop myself from doing something”

Jihyo sighs. ”I have to go back and check.” Nayeon shot her a look. “What?”

“I have to look if everything is normal back there.”

Nayeon shook her head. “No.”

Chaeyoung knew she really messed up. A fight between Nayeon and Jihyo would always be big.

“You won’t go back. I won’t allow you.”

“And why not?”

“It’s not practical, Jihyo. If you go back, we go back. We can’t afford letting someone get lost in a time frame alone. It’ll take us a billion years before we find each other. We have to be careful.”

Jihyo sat down in defeat. “I know that little event would cause something, but maybe let it be for now? It’s not like Chou Tzuyu would remember Chaeyoung forever.”

“This will be the last time. We will go back immediately if something like this happens again.” Jihyo said and went to her room.

Nayeon likes to travel. She travels a lot before deciding that creating a time capsule was worth a shot. Why the year 1997? Nothing in particular but it was mutually agreed on because Chaeyoung wanted to see Chou Tzuyu, Jihyo wanted to be there for Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon’s speculation about the future of Seoul, and Nayeon… well, she tagged in because she finds it fun. At first, she didn’t really plan to be with them but as the main creator of the capsule, she’s obliged to come. And Jihyo’s magic word was “Kim D Foodie Club was popularized in 1997” and here she was. Tempted to eat again at the pub. It has been two weeks since the incident with Chou Tzuyu. Kim D Foodie Club is popular now because Chou Tzuyu recommended it and she’s thankful that the candle thing wasn’t mentioned in the news at all.

“Haven’t seen you in a while, Nayeon. Come sit!” Dahyun greeted her immediately despite the wave of people inside. Is this… bad? Why is her memory so good? “I’ll get the special” she said and sat down.

“Hello again” She looked up but before she could function, Mina sat down in front of her. “Do you like the food?” And even before Nayeon could answer Dahyun yelled her lungs out “Myoui Mina, come back here and serve this before talking to a beautiful girl!” That successfully made Mina go red. She excused herself and served the food to the customer.

So, Mina is a waiter at Kim D’s. She noted.

When she got her food, it’s past lunch now so things are settling down into a more calm atmosphere. Dahyun sat down in front of her and smiled. “Where are your friends? Do they have work?” She asked and Nayeon drank water to go back to her senses. “They’re somewhere everywhere. You know, scattered around” Dahyun nodded. She cautiously ate the food as Dahyun was still looking at her, just smiling. “I like you, Nayeon”

Nayeon shot her a look and saw Dahyun’s wide smile and giggles. Dahyun put some water into Nayeon’s cup. “Will you be my friend?”

Huh… huh??!!

Nayeon didn’t know what to say. It’ll definitely leave a mark on Dahyun’s memories when she rejects her and befriending her could really really change the future. Dahyun’s smile never fades, and it almost made Nayeon feel guilty about not responding fast. “Of course.”

Jihyo, Chaeyoung. I fucked up. 1997, goodbye. I’ll see you again soon, or never.

Nayeon got back home. Jihyo and Chaeyoung were already gathered at the kitchen table, ready to talk about their day. Jihyo talked about cute kids in the train station, Chaeyoung talking about how Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon was well known among normal civilians. Nayeon was quiet. When the other two went quiet, she sniffed and fixed her glasses. “I might have fucked up. I’m so sorry.” She said as she took off her glasses and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Why? What happened?” Jihyo asked. Nayeon looked at both of them and when she noticed their aura was not mad, she then proceeded to talk. “Dahyun said she liked me to be her friend.” Jihyo rests her back in the chair, “Then?” Chaeyoung asked. “I calculated my decision. If I rejected her, I might leave an even more heavy impact than accepting her. If you think it was a bad idea, I am ready to go back.”

Jihyo sighs and puts her palm to her forehead. “Might be a crazy thought but regardless of your friendship with her... Chou Tzuyu still introduced her restaurant and made a lot of buzz. Your friendship with her shouldn’t really matter… future wise”

“Do you really think so?” Chaeyoung nodded confidently.

This is the best about this trio. They know they aren’t the best when comparing with each other. Nayeon wouldn’t think she’s better than Jihyo nor Chaeyoung and it goes all around. If one can’t function well, there’s this other two. If two can’t function, there will always be the one to save the day.

“Adding this to the rule then. Friendships with influential people are okay as long as the main event has already happened.” Jihyo said and brought out her notebook.

Nayeon didn’t really know what to do. Jihyo said it’s okay for friendships but something is about the friendship with Dahyun. It seems too easy. “You’re here again” Nayeon halted her aggressive gum chewing and looked at Mina. “Oh, hi. You again” Mina giggled and sat down beside her. “You shouldn’t be surprised. I told you I pass by here everyday”

Right. She wanted to see this be built.

Nayeon didn’t give her an answer as she just looked at the view in front of her. Three weeks have passed since their first meeting and the park is slowly becoming like a real park. Swing sets, seesaw, monkey bars, and all the alikes of things that are supposed to be in a park.

Mina stood up and was ready to go but Nayeon felt quite uneasy, so she held onto Mina. Mina looked at her and asked through her eyes even though Nayeon was looking down. All Mina could see was Nayeon Blonde hair. “Uh… can you go with me somewhere? I don’t feel good here” Lies. I love this park. What do I mean I don’t feel good?

Mina held Nayeon’s hands tighter and pulled her up. “Let’s go then. To somewhere”

Minutes have passed with no definite place to go to. Nayeon thought that malls are probably the most common ‘somewhere’ isn’t it? In the year 3001, when you say somewhere you only have two options, the malls or the place called Somewhere .

“Hey Boss” Mina greeted her and sat down. Of course Mina would bring Nayeon here. “You’re a bit late. But welcome Nayeon” Dahyun greeted. It’s a little bit less crowded than usual so the aura was good for Nayeon. Nayeon saw new faces. New waiters?

“Special Set?” This girl in a uniform asked. “No, not today, Sana. But we could have some Vanilla shake” Sana nodded and walked back to the counter to punch the two vanilla shakes. It didn’t take a while before their order was in front of them. Mina happily sipped through her vanilla shake and kept her mouth shut besides Nayeon. It was probably Mina’s way of minding her business if Nayeon didn’t ever want to tell her.

“Thank you, Mina” Nayeon said, Mina stopped sipping for a moment and looked at Nayeon. The girl sniffed and fixed her glasses and she found it adorable. She chuckled softly and shook her head. “Hey, I got to taste Kim D’s vanilla shake. So, thank you.”

As soon as they finished their vanilla shakes, Mina had suggested they visit her home. Maybe it’s a 1997 thing, but inviting a stranger seems… strange. At least for Nayeon, it is. Even after a thousand years later, those things were never made normal and it’s the best like that.

“Home sweet home” Mina exhaled as they entered the house. In Nayeon’s perspective, Mina’s house smells like lavender and bamboo. It smelt really good. Come to think of it, Mina smells so much like Lavender. It’s a small house, probably for three people. It looks nothing like houses back in 3001. Posters are stuck onto the wall and fairy lights hang over the room. It suits Nayeon’s style very much, even more than she likes. She popped another mint gum into her mouth before fixing her glasses. “You really like chewing gum, huh?” Mina said as she dust off the sofa, not like there is dust there but maybe just a habit?

“Oh, uh, yeah. Habits” To which Mina nodded.

“This is where somewhere is for me” She commented.

They both sat down and Mina opened the tv and popped a dvd. “Here’s a new one. Con Air. Like 1004 years old, but sure. They watched the whole movie and Nayeon is surprisingly comfortable, it’s suspicious. Nayeon gets suspicious at things like this. So what if she has a little crush on Mina?

What?

Oh.

I have a crush on Mina.

Nothing major, right?

Except it’s someone from 1997.

OH.

Nayeon sat down warily and eyed Mina. This is entirely possible but it shouldn’t be! Mina looked at her and gave her a smile. “The movie is right there.” Mina softly grabbed Nayeon’s chin and made her look at the TV. She giggled right after. “And I’m right here” Nayeon then turned Mina’s face towards her and let their lips touch.

I kissed Mina.

I KISSED MINA?????

When senses hit Nayeon, she moved away from Mina and just stared at her like she’s staring at something terrifying. But to Nayeon, it really was terrifying. She kissed a person from 1997. Mina looked at her wide eyes. They didn’t move an inch for a solid minute before Mina calmed herself down and breathed. She put a hand into her mouth and thoroughly thought about what happened. “Mhm.” Mina mumbled. “Hmm.” Nayeon replied with another mumble. She sat down facing the TV, and Mina did too.

It wasn’t the first time Nayeon nor Mina had kissed someone but it’s definitely a first for Nayeon to kiss someone that’s a hundred years dead

“Look-“ “Hey-“

They faced each other and Nayeon asked for Mina to continue. Mina has gone red and looked away from Nayeon. “What about Dahyun?” “What?” Dahyun? What about Dahyun? “Didn’t Dahyun tell you she liked you? It’s okay. I won’t tell her about this” Nayeon gulped. Mina heard that? And she heard it wrong too. “No, no. Uh. She liked me to be her friend”

Goodluck trying to find another way out, Nayeon.

“Oh.”

“I like you, Mina.”

Goodluck telling this to Jihyo and Chaeyoung, Nayeon.

Mina smiled and nodded. “I do, too.”

Then Nayeon gave her another kiss.

We’re (I’m) fucked.

Nayeon went back home at the same time as Chaeyoung. They all proceeded to sit down in a circle and Jihyo started off with her day, then Chaeyoung. The pair looked at Nayeon waiting for her story as she is the most precious one because of the newly made friendship with Dahyun.

“I was at the park the whole day, then Mina saw me. We went to drink vanilla shakes and then we went into her house, watched a movie, and then I went home.”

See, it wasn’t exactly a lie. She just skipped out on a few things but her day is exactly like that.

Jihyo raised her eyebrow and side eye Nayeon. As if she knew she was up to something. “You kept your story short. That’s new.” Nayeon sniffed. “Did I?” Chaeyoung nodded and her attention was now fully towards Nayeon.

“Hmm.” Nayeon said and fixed her glasses. She rested her back into the chair and looked at her two friends. She shrugs and Chaeyoung was entirely displeased. “I mean, what? We watched movies. That took up all of my time. Isn’t it believable?” Jihyo shook her head no and sighs.

“You know I trust your decisions. I will believe you in a heartbeat. So whatever you're hiding, if there is, I will trust that it is not a bad idea.”

“I am not hiding anything though? That’s all that happened. I have nothing else to share other than that”

White lies and a Genius is often a great truth distorter.

Jihyo nodded and dismissed the fact that she feels and it’s obvious that Nayeon IS hiding something. They all retreated back into their respective rooms before Chaeyoung knocked on Nayeon’s door. She entered the room and sat down in Nayeon’s bed. Nayeon thought she seemed really troubled. Her breaths were uneasy and she was frantic. “You know… you’re not the only one who’s not admitting something.”

Nayeon popped a gum into her mouth before sighing. She sat down, her back facing Chaeyoung’s back. They always do this whenever they want to admit to something but can’t get to talk facing other people. Chaeyoung calmed down and let her back touch Nayeon’s. “I met Chou Tzuyu again today, surprisingly.” Nayeon hums. “She still remembers the candle thing and how it affected her mood. It’s bad, isn’t it? I’m just afraid that we need to go back to that shithole timeline too soon.”

Nayeon faintly nodded and giggled. Chaeyoung, why does when I fuck up, you fuck up too? You need to be the wiser one when I can’t be.

“I kissed Mina.” Nayeon felt Chaeyoung’s body tensed up but she immediately relaxed. Chaeyoung is basically  doing the same thing as Nayeon. It’s not a secret that Chaeyoung likes Chou Tzuyu. All of them knew the risks with Chaeyoung.

But Nayeon… No one knew the risk with you.

“Oh.” Chaeyoung said. “Yeah. Oh. Yours can change the future while mine can only lead to disaster. We’re so alike, huh?” Chaeyoung chuckled. Nayeon is not perfect. I adore her a hundred times more.

“Mind to introduce me to Mina? I want to see her”

So when the sun rose, Nayeon and Chaeyoung went to Kim D Foodie Club and waited for Mina. “You’re early today, Nayeon! Oh and you, I forgot to ask what your name was the other day. Hello, you.” Dahyun enthusiastically greeted them. “Hi, my name is Chaeyoung. Nice to meet you too!” They shook hands and proceeded to sit down to eat.

Kim D’s special set. Nayeon’s favorite. Even a thousand years later! Or, before? But it’s still good. The special set is a special plate that consists of tonkatsu, shredded cabbage, tteokbokki on the side, 4 pieces of gimbap, cheese on top, and the most special is Kim D’s brownie cake that she personally makes fresh everyday. It’s like a full course meal in one set and it’s cheap too! Nayeon is absolutely in love with the meal.

“No chewing gum today?” Mina greeted them. Chaeyoung looked at her and looked at the name plate that’s on Mina’s chest. Ah, she’s The Mina.

Chaeyoung looked at Nayeon then went back to Mina. Chewing gums??? Does she look at you that much???

Nayeon pinched Chaeyoung under the table and they made Chaeyoung flinch. “No, because I’m eating?” Mina gave her a smile and nodded before walking back into the counter. Confidence sure is Mina’s thing. And well, Nayeon is very used to this. She’s a genius after all.

A rang from the bell at the door made all of them look at the entrance. None other than Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon and Chou Tzuyu are entering the shop. “Hey… Nayeon.. What day is it today?”

Nayeon rushed through her memory and if she is not wrong, “It’s July 9, 1997.” The day where Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon announces her well studied speculations about Seoul in the future, which was dangerously accurate to some extent. She talked about how the economy will fall down in the 2070's and will skyrocket by the end of the 2080's, that the whole ½ of South Korea will eventually merge together for more economic power ( This is what made it dangerously accurate because South Korea did merge into one city called Seoul Nights). A lot of these speculations of Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon was acknowledged in the year 2090’s when all those things happened. 40 plus years after her death.

“The candle girl, Chaeyoung? Wow. It is indeed a small world” Chou Tzuyu notices her again, for the third time. People from 1997 remember people way too well. Chaeyoung jolted right up and smiled and said her hello’s to the actress and towards the great Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon as well.

Chaeyoung sat down and continued eating her food quietly. Trying to bury deep down her anxious brain. Chou Tzuyu, Kim Dahyun, Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon in one day is a total revelation. How do so many influential people gather in this one place? Nayeon was alerted. She was very wary and cautious of the things she and Chaeyoung do.

On the 9th of July 1997: Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon, Chou Tzuyu, and Kim Dahyun were gathered in one place. The headline on an article has said that Chou Tzuyu invited the Doctor for a hearty lunch at the restaurant. Chou Tzuyu talked to Kim Dahyun for a little bit of chitchat and Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon likes everything that day and considers it as a day that makes her come back several times to the restaurant. Long story short, this is one of the main events in history. Dr. Yoo found a liking in this place, Kim Dahyun and Chou Tzuyu will eventually be ‘partners’ and thus the restaurant grew bigger nationally. And in the shortest form of the story, this is what really made Kim D Foodie Club.

“You finish? I think we need to go as soon as possible” They quietly stood up before they were surprised by Mina. “Thank you for eat–“ before Mina could finish her sentence, Nayeon grabbed her outside the shop. “I’m sorry I dragged you out here because uh…”

Chaeyoung, please help me. Chaeyoung knew what she needed to do. (She didn’t)

“So you’re Mina?” Chaeyoung stepped forward and looked at Mina from top to bottom, voicing out her  dominance. “Hi, hello”

Chaeyoung nodded. “You look awfully pretty. Nayeon told me everything” Mina put a hand in her nape and chuckled. Her cheeks were flushed as she looked down. “Thank you for calling me awfully pretty.”

Chaeyoung. You did okay. But let’s stop, please?

“You know I’m a traditional girl. If you kiss someone, you marry them. Or at least date them.” “But she kissed me–“

“It doesn’t matter! what I’m saying is, you kissed her back, didn’t you? If you kiss someone back then the feeling is mutual! You have to date her. I end my speech, goodbye.” Chaeyoung left Nayeon with an even more problem.

I’m sorry, Nayeon. My brain is fried at the moment.

“Date you, huh?” Nayeon smiled and shook her head. “You don’t need to. Chaeyoung is just like that.” Mina chuckled. “I can’t ignore requests of someone who called me awfully pretty. It’s too rude and I totally agree with her traditional rules”

Nayeon laughed. Hahahaha. I’m going to send you back to 3001, Chaeyoung.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Mina.”

Nayeon went back home and Chaeyoung was there, standing in the corner of Nayeon’s room. Nayeon brought out the time capsule that was wrapped around the bed’s leg. She held it out. “Go back in 3001 for me, Chaeyoung”

Chaeyoung kneeled down. “I’m sorry, okay? I know I messed up back there but I didn’t mean to! What am I supposed to say?”

Nayeon made a tsk sound and tape back the capsule in carefully. She stood straight again and put a hand on her hips. “I don’t know, Chaeyoung. I’m freaking out”

Nayeon freaking out is bad. It’s REALLY bad. Chaeyoung knows that. Nayeon freaking out will only lead to a lot of unplanned things. “No, no. You shouldn’t be, uh, let me get Mina for you”

Wow, Chaeyoung.

“What?” Chaeyoung looked at her before patting Nayeon’s head. “I studied it! Crushes tend to make you feel happier and more comfortable so, I’m going to get Mina” and before Nayeon knew it, Mina was already over in the living room.

This is a breach of the thin line of past and the future. Someone from the past entering the house of someone from the future. This is a disaster. Is it?

“Are you okay, Nayeon?” Mina was evidently worried and Nayeon didn't know whatever Chaeyoung told Mina for her to get worried like this. Nayeon sat down on the couch. Where’s Chaeyoung? On the lookout for Jihyo. “What did Chaeyoung tell you?”

Mina gave her a faint smile before caressing Nayeon’s back. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t forcing you to date me. It’s okay if you don’t want to.”

Chaeyoung, what did you tell her?

“Oh uh. What did she really tell you?” Nayeon faces Mina and she’s not going to lie but Mina’s hand on her back is absolutely comforting. “You freaked out over the dating thing. You don’t really have to. I just think that–“ Nayeon softly captures Mina's face and gives her a kiss. Not that Nayeon voluntarily did, her body acts differently, you know? Fuck this.

She stopped kissing Mina but was still holding her face. Mina, I’m not freaked out about the dating thing. I’m more freaked out by the fact that I’m kissing you again and again when I shouldn’t. “I’m freaked out by some other things that I unfortunately couldn’t say. But thanks. I appreciate you coming here”

Mina could only give a nod. Kisses are so casual for Nayeon— with Nayeon. Nayeon gives her another kiss before putting a distance. She stood up, opened the door and called Chaeyoung back in. Mina had the time to look around the house. It’s nothing out of place. Just a really neat place for people to live in. But one thing is noticeable. Nayeon’s stack of mint gums on the cabinet, and everywhere. An extreme habit, I guess?

Chaeyoung and Nayeon went back to the room and Chaeyoung apologized for lying and then sat down to open the TV to watch some shows with Chou Tzuyu in it. Mina and Nayeon settle down as well. “Chou Tzuyu is really pretty, no?” Mina initiated the talk and if we talk about Chou Tzuyu, Chaeyoung is all ears and eyes and mind on it. “I know! Isn’t she amazing?” Mina chuckled and nodded. “She is”

“What happened to the candle thing? I heard earlier she called you a candle girl or something?” Mina hit a spot for the both girls. Nayeon felt anxious while Chaeyoung became shy. “Well…”

Chaeyoung explained it and Mina was laughing adorably. “That’s cute. I agree though. Birthdays are all about wishes and feelings” Chaeyoung sat down next to Mina and she just became a pure ball of sunshine and excitement. “When’s your birthday, Mina? Aren’t we the same age?”

“March 24th. I’m 24 years old”

“That makes you older than me then. I’m 23. But that makes you younger than Nayeon! She’s an oldie at 25!” Nayeon slapped Chaeyoung’s arm and laughed.

“Oh? You’ll be 26 on September 22nd!” Chaeyoung added.

Isn’t Mina technically the old one here?

Mina spent some time just talking with Chaeyoung before a ring on her flip phone sent everyone in a gaze. The flip phones in person! Chaeyoung and Nayeon thought together. Mina accepted the call before standing up abruptly. “I’m sorry, boss. Yes, I’ll be right back in a minute”

Nayeon gave Chaeyoung a stern look. “Let me walk you back there. I’ll formally apologize to Dahyun for keeping you” Chaeyoung said. Mina giggled and shook her head. “Don’t worry too much, Chae. Dahyun adores you too. I’ll explain it myself”

Chaeyoung found her new nickname charming. Mina is a good talker, a great listener, and overall a great companion. No wonder Nayeon found herself in this mess. People from the 1990's are a great bunch. It’s a shame that they only lived up until the next era. If only Chaeyoung could bring Mina and Chou Tzuyu and Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon to 3001, then everyone would be happy. Wouldn’t they?

“See you, Mina” Chaeyoung bid.

Jihyo arrived home an hour after Mina left. Jihyo is critical. She knows everything. And everything is as in everything. “I smell lavender. Who got a new perfume?” She asked as she put down her bag on the kitchen table. The pair stood up and went to sit down in the kitchen, as they always do for the past month. “Mina was here” she shot a look over Nayeon, wanting to know more. “Oh? Where’s she now?”

“Kim Dahyun called her. She’s a waiter” Jihyo nodded and exhaled. “Okay, since you’re both here earlier than me, I’ll start. I met Dr. Yoo Jeongyeon.”

Nayeon and Chaeyoung looked at Jihyo. “Well, it was a coincidence. I went into a café and bumped into her. The world is indeed, really small.” She exclaimed. The other two nodded in agreement.

“Crazy thoughts but can I share?” Nayeon spoke. Jihyo nodded of course. “It’s so strange how we can be so close in proximity to these influential people. It’s too much for it to be a coincidence. Kim Dahyun is close or soon will be, with Chou Tzuyu, Dr. Yoo is connected to Chou for whatever reason, Mina is deeply connected to Kim Dahyun. It goes all around. Mina also acted like it was a normal thing to see Chou Tzuyu around that much in the club. I don’t know. Did we read wrong?”

Jihyo hums in agreement. “That’s true. It’s also strange that you also smell like lavender, like overwhelmingly lavender.” Nayeon rolled her eyes. “Will you please focus on the main thing? I’m saying that our interactions with them are so much for a mere coincidence! And we have no idea what the hell is happening in the future now because of our connections with them.” Jihyo nodded again. “That’s what I’m saying. You smell dangerously like lavender and I can’t take it off my mind that you’re closer to Mina than the initial rules we created. We are not allowed to be with someone from this timeline, Nayeon.”

Nayeon stood up and heavily slapped her hands at the table. She fixed her glasses and looked indignantly into Jihyo. “You should have stayed honest, Jihyo. I know what you’re doing with Yoo.”

In all honesty, no one on this trio is honest enough, nor is a great liar. But they sure are a bunch of annoying and truth distorting freaks.

Nayeon stomped her feet in frustration and closed the door behind her. God knows where her feet will lead her to.

Well, one thing was, it led her to the park that’s now nearly finished.

Phones. Flip phones were a trend in 1997. A year after it was invented. Nayeon went to the closest shop to buy some and bought one. She went to Kim Dahyun’s club and Mina was there closing up the store. She was wiping the table and Dahyun was on the counter counting the money they earned.

“You close early” Nayeon made her entrance. Dahyun put down the money, wiped her hands, and went to Nayeon, smiling. “You just came late. Do sit down. You’re invited to my party.”

A party for Dahyun is unlimited bottles of Soju and snacks. It doesn’t matter how many people. Alcohol is the star of the party anyway. “Alright my dear friends!”

Sana, Mina, Dahyun… and Nayeon?

Dahyun raised a shot of Soju in the air and breathed. “Kim D Foodie Club is going to be top 1 in the whole of South Korea!”

Sana and Mina cheered and shot their drinks too. Nayeon quietly did. Because It’s true. It’s still at the top in her timeline. The rain has started pouring outside and the night even got deeper. The bell rang and then a girl in a suit entered. “Am I too late?” Dahyun stood up and hugged her. “We just started. Come sit down.”

They were sat by pairs. Mina and Nayeon, Sana and the new girl, then Dahyun in the middle. “Oh, I forgot to introduce you to each other. Nayeon, this is Momo. Momo, this is Nayeon.” They greeted each other and made small talk.

July of 1997, the bloom of Kim D Foodie Club. It was recommended heavily by Dr. Yoo and the great Chou Tzuyu. This news was all reported by none other than the girl in front of me. Hirai Momo.

When Nayeon rushed back through her memories, she remembers it now. Hirai Momo is indeed one of the influential friends Kim Dahyun has. Nayeon nor the other two have no idea what happens behind the articles they read. Not everything is recorded through papers and videos, isn’t it? This is a celebratory night. One of probably the most important nights for Dahyun, and Nayeon is here when she shouldn’t be.

The rain was getting heavier and caused their voices to be louder. “No no no. Her friend lit a candle for Tzuyu to blow on. It must be a good day for her!” Dahyun laughed, obviously tipsy as she slurred her words. Momo pointed at Nayeon. “Her friend, yeah?” Momo then looked at her, her eyes were screaming drunk. “I know Chou Tzuyu well! You know Dr. Yoo? This is a very important secret, okay? Dr. Yoo and Chou Tzuyu are sisters!” Momo laughed but then she continued, “The Yoo family adopted Tzuyu so she could stay here in Korea. When Tzuyu became famous she decided to unadopt herself from the Yoo family. But nevertheless, they still consider each other as sisters. Fun, right? Hey, do you wonder why I know this? Because that girl Jeongyeon is my best friend!”

They are all connected. From Mina, to Dahyun. To Yoo Jeongyeon and to Tzuyu. The Yoo sisters, to Momo. Then Momo, back to Mina and Dahyun. They are connected…. And we’re connected to all of them!

Cold sweats were pouring down Nayeon’s whole face and she blamed it on the alcohol. She fixed her glasses and chuckled nervously.  “I might have way too much tonight. Can I excuse myself?” Dahyun agrees and decides to end the night as well. Mina went to help Dahyun and Momo, so Dahyun asked Sana to walk Nayeon home.

“Bit of work back there,” Sana giggles. “We see each other quite often but this is the first time we talked, don’t we?” Nayeon nodded and gave her a grin. “It’s crazy to think Dr. Yoo and Chou Tzuyu are sisters. Just too much to digest because my friends adore those two”

Sana is surprisingly calming, the same as Mina. “Yeah. I was like that too. Momo always tells that story to everyone that’s friends with Dahyun apparently.” She giggles. It didn’t take long when they were already in Nayeon’s house. “Thank you, Sana. I’ll see you next time. Good talking to you.”

Sana smiled and waved goodbye. “Tell Dahyun tomorrow that I walked you home safely.”

Jihyo was waiting in the living room. Nothing like a casual talk with Nayeon would fix this. “Was that Mina outside? You could’ve invited her in.” Nayeon slouch down and takes off her glasses. “No. It was Sana. A waiter in the club too”

She nodded and sat down opposite Nayeon. “What do we really want to do here, Nayeon?” Nayeon sat straight and looked into her. “We are just a bunch of 20 year olds who are law breakers because they wanted to go and take a look back in time.” Jihyo sighed. The pair stayed quiet for quite some time before Chaeyoung appeared in the living room. “I don’t want to go back to 3001 yet” she sat down on the floor and opened the TV. There was Dr. Yoo explaining her speculations of the future. “If I was the one in charge of this travel, I’d say fuck it and forget about what will happen in the future.” She added.

I personally think even hundreds of years later, Seoul would not change. Not because of the external factors but because of our people. As time evolves, so should us. South Korea would be one whole. More economic power for the country.” They heard from Dr. Yoo on the tv is completely the same as what they watched in the year 3001. Chaeyoung faced her friends and swallowed some courage. “And that’s why I’m not in charge. Nayeon, you should know what to do because I trust you with my life”

Nayeon sniffed.

“The speech of Dr. Yoo was still the same, even after the candle incident, or my thing with Mina, nor Jihyo’s spontaneous secret meet ups with Jeongyeon. How thin is our line on altering the future in reality? How much more do we have?” Chaeyoung’s mouth was agape. Jihyo and Jeongyeon?? Secret meetups?

“We changed the events that happened behind those news and articles.” Jihyo stated. “People around you can influence you a lot. Chaeyoung already made an influence on Chou Tzuyu. The moment Mina came into the scene, you’re gone, Nayeon. I admit I have been meeting up with Jeongyeon because I adore her a lot. But I know how far I can go.”

“I know my limits, Jihyo.”

”Do you?”

Nayeon stared into her again. The air has become too thick to even breathe into. Chaeyoung has already started staring quietly. You should be the sane one in times like this, Nayeon. They believe you and they trust you so choose your words carefully. “We won’t go back. yet. That’s my decision.”

Chaeyoung went back to her room immediately. “Nayeon, what’s the thing with Mina?” Nayeon’s head was splitting in half from all the alcohol she had taken for the first time in ages. She held onto the kitchen counter and closed her eyes. “I don’t know. I kiss her sometimes”. Nayeon massages the bridge of her nose. “Let me just remind you, Nayeon. We’re dealing with people from 1997. We’re from 3001.” Jihyo pats Nayeon’s shoulder before retreating back to her room.

Everything is okay with Jihyo and Chaeyoung. Please get yourself together, Nayeon. Mina is a hundred years dead.

Mina is alive. In 1997, that is.

Nayeon found herself standing in front of Mina in the park at 7 in the morning. “Good Morning” Nayeon greeted. Mina smiles at her and invites her for a morning coffee. “I can’t keep you off my mind these days. I wonder why.” Mina teases and they share a laugh.  “Yeah no wonder.”

Nayeon takes a sip of her water. Coffee and mint gums don’t mix. “Dahyun wanted to see us later. Would you come?”

“Why” Nayeon grew anxious. Why does she need her? “She’s apparently changing the logo of the restaurant. She said you look fancy so she wants you to choose”

So there was Nayeon choosing the logo for Dahyun. Nayeon thought Dahyun changed it too soon. In the articles, she changed it around February  of 1998. “It’s probably best to change the logo on the anniversary of the shop, don’t you think?” Nayeon suggested. “Right? I knew you’d think that too. Sana here wanted to change it by then too.”

Sana shrugged and continued wiping the table clean. “It was just a random suggestion but I like Nayeon’s choice”

Dahyun clapped her hands together and stood up. “I’m Iucky have you two!” Mina stood up and hugged her arms to her chest. “What about me? It should be us three” Dahyun rolled her eyes at the comment.

“I haven't forgiven you yet. Who are you?” Mina tutted and sat down angrily. “I told you it was Momo! I never vomit plus I was not even that drunk last night. How dare you think I’m the one who put you into the vomit pit” she rolled her eyes back and huffed. Nayeon and Sana began to laugh. These two are miserable.

“Anyway. I noticed you two” Dahyun pointed out Mina and Nayeon. She relaxes into the chair and even puts her feet up to another chair beside her and lays an arm at the chair’s rail. She raised her eyebrow and smirked cheekily. Mina’s face isn’t really helping since it’s red by now. See, Nayeon is a master at this. “I’m very strict to my workers, Ms. Nayeon. If you’re going to take one, you have to talk to the boss” Everyone could tell Dahyun was proud of that statement. Nayeon fixes her glasses and drinks her water. “Where should we start then, boss?”

She really is a master at this.

Oh Nayeon.

When the diner closes, Mina walks Nayeon home as it was an ‘obvious’ courtesy that needs to be done according to Dahyun. Walking side by side with someone is not relevating nor amazing but Mina’s demeanor towards Nayeon is adorable. She gets red every time their skin touches, and Nayeon giggles whenever it happens. They finally arrived at Nayeon’s home. They stood in front of each other while Nayeon was just smiling the biggest that her cute front teeth were showing. “Come here” Nayeon casually grabbed Mina’s face and pulled her closer, giving her a soft kiss on the lips. And gave her a few more. And a little bit more until Nayeon felt the smile on Mina’s face. They were a giggling mess before Mina put a distance between them, just enough for the both of them to have personal space and look at Nayeon. “I’ll see you again when?”

Nayeon giggles. “I’ll see you later.”

“Nayeon?” The pair both looked at Jihyo who had their weekly groceries on both hands. Nayeon immediately went over to help her. “This is Mina, Jihyo. Mina, this is Jihyo” Jihyo smiles and acknowledges the greetings. “You’re invited for dinner. Chaeyoung is going to cook and that’s the best part of our week”

When they entered the house, Chef Chaeyoung was standing there like some kind of a superhero in full gear. Apron, her hair is tied, she has a towel tucked into her jeans, and she’s even sharpening the knife. “What’s the menu today, chef?” Nayeon asks as she puts down the groceries. Chaeyoung put down the knife, looked at Nayeon then smugly smiled. “ Bibimguksu ” which Chaeyoung has been crazy about for the past week. “No. You cook your best food. We have a guest” and it took Chaeyoung a second before noticing Mina. “Oh. I was going to make kimchi stew anyway. Make yourself feel at home, Mina! I’ll make you my best stew”

Something with Jihyo is that she sometimes feels like a parent. To both Mina and Nayeon, it definitely feels like that now. Nayeon swallows thickly and Mina gets cold sweats. Jihyo sat there reading the newspaper and the silence was unbearable for Nayeon. “This is the first time we meet, right? Mina?” Mina nodded. “It is.”

After some time, Mina relaxed and felt more comfortable. Chaeyoung arrived with the food and with Nayeon’s confidence. “Here it is! The good ol’ kimchi stew” They said their thank you’s and began to eat. Jihyo stayed quiet the whole time and even after they finished the meal. Nayeon walked Mina out and said their goodbye’s. “I see now, Nayeon.” Jihyo spoke.

Nayeon continued to get the plates and began washing them. The atmosphere was very cold whenever Chaeyoung was out of the scene. It’s like Jihyo and Nayeon aren't as compatible as Chaeyoung and Nayeon. “Would it be worth it?” Nayeon knows what Jihyo meant.

The water continues to splash as Jihyo awaits for her answer. Jihyo sat down facing Nayeon. One thing about Jihyo is she’s patient and she will wait. Nayeon washes the last plate. She closed the faucet and wipes her hands dry. When she faced Jihyo, Jihyo’s face was more worried than angry. She took off her glasses and put them on the counter. Jihyo knows what Nayeon wants. She gave Nayeon a nod and went to her room.

Nayeon needed to think and Jihyo will give her all the time they have.

Enough days has passed. It was the day of Nayeon’s birthday. Jihyo had suggested that they invite friends.. Dahyun, Sana, Mina, and even Momo. Chaeyoung made the effort to invite them all and un fortunately, Momo was there too so she invited her as well. Nayeon was in charge of groceries this month so she might as well buy herself a cake so Chaeyoung won’t tell her that “ birthdays are just all about wishes ” because she forgot to buy birthday cakes.

“Why would you shop 2 cities away from your home? And the bad thing is you invited me” Mina complained. Nayeon smiles “Hello and Good Morning. And hey, I didn’t force you to come.” Mina hugs Nayeon. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“Happy birthday, Nayeon”

They continued to shop and brought the cake before going home. Mina, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung suggested they all cook together for convenience. Kim Dahyun is cooking for my birthday. Jihyo and Nayeon both think this is beyond normal. One thing they know for sure is that the future has changed hopefully only by a little. They hoped this birthday party wouldn’t affect what happened in the future. “Hey, is it okay to you that I invited Jeongyeon and Tzuyu?” Momo asked. The trio froze. It’s as if inviting Kim Dahyun wasn’t a risk enough, now Jeongyeon and Tzuyu are coming?

“I know you’re close with Jeongyeon, Jihyo. And you, Chaeyoung, Chou Tzuyu won’t ever get rid of the candle. So I figured it’s okay?” Nayeon nodded several times, in an attempt to hide their worries and to not make Momo feel she did something bad (even though it is bad) “It’s okay. I’d like to meet Dr. Yoo anyway”

The sun was setting as the moon pops up in the distance. The food were cooked, Mina brought the cake they bought earlier to the table, and Nayeon was sitting there. Chou Tzuyu was in the living room talking with Sana and Chaeyoung. Yoo Jeongyeon was catching up with Jihyo and Dahyun. Momo was buying drinks. “Chaeyoung likes Tzuyu a lot, huh?” Mina asked Nayeon. She sat down beside Nayeon and held her hand. “She does,” she replied and Mina kissed her hand. “I’d like to propose something to you” Mina mentioned so Nayeon looked at her. “Can you be my girlfriend?”

Nayeon loves everything about Mina. The way she gently holds her, how calmly she supports Nayeon and her tantrums, and how she respects Nayeon’s space and decisions. She also loves the way she cooks and the way she brushes her teeth. The way she hums when she’s washing the dishes and how she has grown accustomed to buying Nayeon’s mint gums and jellies incredibly fast. Mina is a great listener and a great talker. She knows her way around her words. She talks to Jihyo and Chaeyoung like they are family. She loves the way Mina takes care of Dahyun, or Sana, or Momo. She loves how Mina is hardworking and dependable. And she loves the way Mina makes it so simple to love her.

Nayeon smiles at her. “I love you.”

I really do.

But that’s the only thing I could say to you.

Mina smiles back. “I love you too.” Maybe it was quite too soon. Mina decides to try some time again later.

They all gathered now in the kitchen area and began to eat. Of course the food was good. The chefs were amazing. The night went deeper and for the first time in this timeline, the trio were just having fun and laughing without a single worry about the future they may or may not just ruin.

Jihyo thinks: One night. One more night. She’s split into saying that forever and again.

Chaeyoung thinks: More nights. More nights like this please.

Nayeon holds on. As much as she wants to say Let us stay like this forever she knows they can’t. So, she thinks: Let’s stay like this for a while longer.

Tonight, Nayeon held Mina’s hand tighter than she did for the last two months.

I don’t want to say goodbye yet .

I didn’t want you to say you love me too.

I don’t want to end this badly.

Nayeon’s tears were flowing down into her eyes. “I love you, Mina.”

I really do.

Because that’s the only thing I can say to you.

“Where are you going?” Jihyo asked. Nayeon was prepared. She wore her best pairing of jeans and jacket and applied some makeup. “Hey, it’s rude to ask that when she’s obviously going on a date with my favorite person Mina!” Chaeyoung chuckled and tossed a pack of strawberry flavored gums. A lot has changed in the last five months. Mina took notice of Nayeon’s love for mint gums but there was a time where mint gums were nowhere to be found at stores. Nayeon threw tantrums of course so Mina came to the rescue and suggested an alternative. Strawberry flavored gums! Which is nowhere near the taste of Nayeon’s xylitol gums but it works because Mina gave it. “I swear one day your jaw is going to stop working because of how much you chew in a day” Jihyo teases her. “You need to stop saying shitty comments, Jihyo” Nayeon rolled her eyes and began to chew. I still prefer mint over strawberries, actually.

“I’ll be back later. Enjoy your day with Jeongyeon, and you with Tzuyu”

Nayeon began walking. November is the best time of the year. Not too cold and not too hot. It’s just right for Nayeon’s preference. She wasn’t really going on a date today. In fact she wasn’t going with Mina. Today is all about Nayeon. She went to a lake, a city away from where they live.

For the past three months, she kept it to herself. She’s planning to go back in the year 3001. It’s about time. Maybe in January, after the New Years with Mina.

How is she going to tell Mina about the whole thing and why would she and the rest suddenly disappear in this world? She doesn’t know yet. She writes every night in her notebook about what to tell Mina and not a single one makes sense and some is just pure shit. The only thing that would make sense is to tell Mina that she illegally time travelled to this year, lived in it for a few months and unfortunately fell in love but still, they have to go back. Eventually. No matter the newly found happiness in this timeline.

No one will get out of this timeline happy. And they know that.

Nayeon sighs and admires the stream of water she’s looking at. She found her happiness, but at what cost? It will still go down the drain. Nayeon took one lesson from all of this. If you want to find happiness, make sure to find it in your world. “Nayeon?” Nayeon immediately looked up and was greeted by Sana. “It is you” she smiles and they both sit down.

They went quiet for a while. Not like there was an awkward air because well, it’s Sana. The softest person Nayeon has ever met. They don’t talk much because Sana is closer to Jihyo than to her but she didn’t mind. She was occupied by Mina and Dahyun anyway. “Can I tell you a secret?” Sana said. Nayeon is very cautious of secrets herself so Sana telling her secrets means she trusts her, doesn’t she?

Sana then continues. “I feel like I’m running out of time” Nayeon only looks at her. ”I’ve been living here for 3 years. At first it was fun but the fun is all over. The guilt and the pain starts to settle in. I know I need to go back but what should I tell all of you?” Sana says and begins to weep. Nayeon tried to understand. And the only thing that’s popping into her head is that:

She’s a time traveler. “I’m a time traveler, Nayeon.”

Fuck.

Nayeon stood up and by the looks of it, Sana wasn’t expecting those reactions. She expected more of like a huh? are you drunk? what are you saying? like Mina did the other night. But there was Nayeon, her face was full of horror. She immediately went to bring out her phone and dial Jihyo’s number. “Are you home? Don’t go anywhere at all.”

Nayeon grabbed Sana’s hand and dragged her home. Sana didn’t know what Nayeon was doing but she still went with her. When they reached the house, Jihyo was standing there as Chaeyoung watched TV.

“Tell her what you said to me, Sana.” Nayeon ordered her. Sana looked at Jihyo then back at Nayeon.

Nayeon shook her head and looked at Jihyo. “She’s a time traveler too.” Chaeyoung immediately snapped her head to the three girls and stood up from the couch. Jihyo attempted to conceal her true emotions but failed as she just realized. “I knew it. You just popped up in this timeline.” Sana widened her eyes. Nayeon sniffed and fixed her glasses. “Did you ever tell anyone other than me?”

“I told Mina. But she didn’t believe it like any of the people here. She said I was drunk”

Nayeon tutted and looked away. Jihyo set a foot in front and held Sana’s hand. “What year are you from?” Sana sat down and held Jihyo’s hand tighter. “3001” The relief on Jihyo’s face was evident. Thank God because I can’t deal with any more people from another timeline.

“Can we see your time capsule? You were thinking of going back” Nayeon says. Sana brought it out from the bag. It’s a different looking time capsule, definitely a government owned one. “You have it with you all the time?”

Sana shook her head. “No. It was just because I was thinking of going back today.”

“This is a government owned unit. Where did you get it from?” Chaeyoung said when she finished examining it. She lays it down carefully back at the table and waits for Sana’s answer. “My father was one of the scientists that are allowed to go back in time. One day, he came back from the year 2040’s and told me that his experience was amazing. He lent me one before he came back to 2040. One last thing he told me is that I should have fun with the capsule.”

“And did you? Have fun, I mean” Nayeon asked. Sana’s tears fell for another round but she smiled. “So much. I loved Kim Dahyun, so much.” She cries. “I kept going back, you see. Because Kim Dahyun’s decision stayed the same for 3 years of going back and forth in this timeline.” Sana says.

“She would love me in December of 1997 and won’t in February of 1998. Every single time .”

Sana smiles again. “It’s close to December again, isn’t it?” Her face went from smiling and to being hurt. Jihyo hugs her friend and caresses her. It’s really tough to be in love. It sucks.

Chaeyoung went to Nayeon and hugged her. “It’s okay. I’m here” because before Nayeon knew it, tears were also running down her face uncontrollably. “Chaeyoung, it hurts.” She whispers. Chaeyoung nodded, pats her head then kisses her temples. “I know.”

After minutes of uncontrollable tears, Nayeon and Sana calmed down. Jihyo waited for a second before clasping both of her hands. “On new years, we go.” Normally, Chaeyoung would refuse this but Nayeon’s tears were much more painful than going back to where they actually belong. Nayeon retreated her footsteps and began making her way through the front door. “Nayeon!” Jihyo yelled when Nayeon closed the door behind her, she was going to follow her but Sana held her back. “Let her be. I understand how she feels.” She says and pats Jihyo’s shoulder for reassurance.

“Nayeon will never admit it but she loves Mina that much.”

As soon as Nayeon reached Mina’s house, she knocked several times. Quickly, please. Mina opened the door expecting a huge toothy smile from her but instead pure panic and fear was what she was greeted with. Nayeon hugged her and began to cry again. “I’m sorry, Mina. I love you. I really really love you.” She held Mina tighter. She confesses how much she means to her. “I love you. I love you.” She weeps. Mina caresses her back and kisses her temple. She doesn’t know what’s happening but all she knows is that Nayeon needs her.

Mina managed to calm Nayeon down. She lets her sit down and breathe while she heats up warm milk (that Nayeon apparently loves.) “What’s happening, Nayeon?” She asked gently, careful not to provoke or hit any sore nerves. Nayeon only looks at her and Nayeon’s heart breaks anyway.

Nayeon tried to smile. She held Mina’s hand and looked at her again. “Come here” Mina did so. She went closer to Nayeon and closed their gap. Mina’s kisses were always genuine and soft. But it tastes so painful.

Actions have consequences. And Nayeon chose to live with it.

“Mina, would you forgive me?” Confusion is what’s written on Mina’s face. She wants to ask. Ask about why Nayeon suddenly barges in or why Nayeon was crying in the first place. “It depends on what you will do.”

Please forgive me.

Nayeon squeezed herself into Mina's arms and stayed there for a while. Dearly holding into Mina like she’s her lifeline. “I love you too, Nayeon.”

Chaeyoung was anxious when she stood before Tzuyu’s house. It was the 21st of December and one thing she knew she had to do was to say goodbye. Tzuyu has invited all of them to her house as a farewell party because she’ll be living in some other part of the world for her work. Chaeyoung knew about it in the articles.

On January 1st of 1998, Chou Tzuyu lived in Los Angeles, California to shoot for her upcoming movie.

It was the most important move in her career. She would grow and prosper in LA.

Sana was adamant to go back because it’s December and soon, Dahyun will love her. She stands near Dahyun and just wanted to feel her presence one more time. Dahyun looked over Sana and held her hand as she saw how troubled Sana looked. Oh Dahyun.

Jihyo was hesitant. Saying goodbye forever to Jeongyeon is far worse than telling her they are time travellers as Jeongyeon would understand why they have to go back and would feel more reassured about their whereabouts. The other three agreed on telling Jeongyeon about this since the scientist had thought of the possibilities about those.

Nayeon… Nayeon tries to stay sane. She would think differently than what comes out of her mouth . She can’t waver. She can’t afford to. She’s the one the others trust the most.

Mina held her hand. It felt warm and comfortable. This is what Nayeon deserves.

They entered Tzuyu’s house and began to look around the majestic interior. A very big picture of Chou Tzuyu in her best gown was beside the wall where the chandelier hangs. Numerous awards were displayed on one side of the house. This house was more pleasing than their houses back in 3001 where all are inserted with technologies.

“Feel free to feel at home, guys” Tzuyu smiles shyly and leads them to the kitchen area. Food was catered in, all they had to do was eat and they did. Dahyun cracked some jokes in between dinner and many of them laughed. Jeongyeon was more interested in the “brighter” side of the conversation so she told some of the worst intelligent jokes you could ever hear. Chaeyoung laughed at it, which makes sense because Chaeyoung is a nerd. Momo would butt in and counterattacks Jeongyeon’s joke and everyone would favor Momo’s dumb jokes over the smart ones the Scientist was giving. Nayeon tries to participate by making jokes out of Momo’s dumbness and mostly Chaeyoung’s stupid things she did.

When things quieted down and all the soju Tzuyu brought was out, they started to settle down on one side of the house and chill. Nayeon isn’t really a fan of alcohol. She drinks for sure but she actually doesn’t like it.

Because she doesn’t like it when she forgets things or speaks incoherent words, whenever the alcohol takes effect and also the part where you get headaches the morning after you drink. Beer and low alcoholic drinks is what she prefers. Chou Tzuyu bought soju. She bought thousands of them. (at least this is what Nayeon thinks.)

Well, Nayeon, you see… this is a farewell party. It’s normal that she wants to have fun.

Nayeon smiles at Tzuyu and puts an arm around her shoulder. “You don’t plan on making us all drunk, don’t you?” Momo gave an earful laugh while clapping her hands. “Oh Nayeon. You haven't had a drink with Tzuyu yet, huh? Those soju you see,” Momo removed Nayeon’s arm around Tzuyu and dragged her around the mountain of soju that was on the floor. Momo pointed it out and made it seem like she divides half the soju, “These are just for her. And these, one, two, three… ten bottles are for us.”

There’s no way Tzuyu will drink 5 bottles of soju by herself!?!?! It’s impossible!

Momo laughed then again. “You shouldn’t underestimate our Tzuyu!”

The night has gotten deeper and Nayeon stayed true to her words. She didn’t drink one bit. Chaeyoung takes all her shots but she does it discreetly so the other girls wouldn’t bother her. Nayeon chews her gum and smiles when she makes eye contact with the others. She could see that Dahyun was beginning to get close to Sana, just like Sana said. It was over Chou Tzuyu’s farewell party when Dahyun started liking her. Sana sits there without speaking a word and occasionally smiles at Dahyun.

Mina, who was clearly getting tipsy, rested her head on Nayeon’s shoulder. “Why’s Chaeyoung taking your shots? Look at her” she whispers. Nayeon looked at Chaeyoung and her state was different from her usual self but it was still her. Chaeyoung is a great drinker, she actually trained herself to have 3 bottles of soju by herself before she begins getting drunk so she could take Nayeon’s drink like this. “She loves me that much”

Mina giggled and nodded. She sat straightly and gave Chaeyoung a dashing smile and a thumbs up. Chaeyoung, who was about to have Nayeon’s shot, raised her glass to show it to Mina. She mouthed cheers.

Momo stood up and almost fell over before Jeongyeon helped her while laughing. She mouthed a thank you before looking at Mina cross-eyed. Then to Nayeon. “What’s the deal!” She laughs. Mina did as well. Well, clearly, they are both drunk. The only people who were not drunk were Nayeon and Jeongyeon. Mina grabbed Nayeon’s face and kissed her. “Here’s an answer for you” They cheered and Nayeon was left flustered. It’s definitely one of the happiest days.

Slowly, one by one, they began to drop. Momo was first, then Tzuyu. Sana went outside with Dahyun following. Jihyo tries to steady herself to appear okay but she wasn’t, she can’t understand a word. Mina was asleep next to Nayeon, then Chaeyoung was crawling towards her too. “Nayeon, thank you for staying sane.” She whispers before crawling next to Jihyo and drops asleep.

Nayeon stood up and went to the terrace to get herself some fresh air. She felt a presence and she knows who she is because only one of the girls was awake. Jeongyeon leans over the railing. “We rarely talk, don’t we?” She said, Nayeon leans in the railings as well. “Yeah, it seem so”

There was no awkward air. And Nayeon has decided.

You really shouldn’t but you must.

Nayeon looked over Jeongyeon and tuts, successfully catching the scientist’s attention. “You ever think if time travelling is possible?” Jeongyeon leans her head to the right and looks at Nayeon. Nayeon knows she’s thinking.

“Not entirely impossible but I must say that with the technology we have now, it’ll be difficult.” Nayeon was overwhelmed. A real scientist is talking to her about what she knows best. Nayeon gave her a nod. “It is possible.” She chewed another gum and fixed her glasses. “You didn’t drink, right?” The scientist stood straight and replied no. “Jihyo is uptight. She wants everything to go according to plan and once something goes wrong, she will take action. That’s what she does best. Chaeyoung, she’s obedient. She notices simple things that are not on her spectrum for normal things. Those two… they do what I say without any questions and without a doubt. Do you wonder why?”

Jeongyeon awaits this conversation. She knows Jihyo has been very careful towards her actions. She didn’t talk if it’s regarding time travelling and the alikes. It all comes down to Nayeon? Jeongyeon wants to know. “I do wonder.” Nayeon looks at her and exhales. Preparing herself.

“Because this person in front of you created a time capsule and I brought them along with me.”

Nayeon knows Jeongyeon was stopping herself from asking. Jeongyeon stares at Nayeon and is careful about what she will say. She did want to find out whether time travelling is possible or not but the possibility that Nayeon, Chaeyoung, and Jihyo are time travellers bugs her mind. “I’m telling you this because I believe it’s the best to do so. We’re fucked.”

“Fuck.” Jeongyeon muttered. She walked back and forth in front of Nayeon and Nayeon stayed there with her arms in her chest and breathing carefully. “Things escalated to this. From me accidentally meeting Mina, you with Jihyo, Chaeyoung with Tzuyu, Sana with Dahyun. From the day we arrived, it’s fucked up already.” Jeongyeon stopped in front of Nayeon. “You approached us, already knowing our identities?” Nayeon nods. “Before going here, the only thing we could do was study all the major events that were in the newspapers. From Chou Tzuyu’s birthday in Kim Dahyun’s restaurant, to your speculations. And to Chou Tzuyu’s move to LA. It was necessary to study them to avoid alterations but as you can see, we failed.”

Nayeon closes her glasses and holds it. “These gatherings are painful, Doc. Jihyo meeting you was painful. Chaeyoung adoring Chou Tzuyu was painful. Seeing Sana and Dahyun is painful. Talking to Momo was painful. Mina…. Everything with Mina is painful.” Nayeon’s tears were falling and all she could do was stand there and look at Jeongyeon, who was still grasping the idea.

“Unnie” Chaeyoung stood there and her tears were heavily falling.

Jeongyeon looks over the two teary eyed girls. She really wanted to believe them. But it’s too crazy to do so. “Let’s meet each other tomorrow. Tell me your address.”

Jihyo, Sana, Chaeyoung, and Nayeon sat in silence at their table. They told Jihyo everything the moment she woke up and she sighs and says it can’t be helped. Jeongyeon knocked and they tensed up. They sat down and Jihyo did the briefing. Her headache and drunk body didn’t help so she occasionally got some help from Sana.

“Your father gave you the capsule,” Jeongyeon points at Sana, “And you three… Nayeon did the calculations, Chaeyoung did the capsule, and Jihyo researched about the capsule.” They all nodded. “In the future it is a thing? But only selected scientists are allowed to.” Jeongyeon clarified and nodded at herself.

“You plan to go back by January?” Jeongyeon looked at Nayeon. She shook her head. Chaeyoung gazes at her and she understands why. “By Christmas” The other two agrees and Jeongyeon can see now how Nayeon is the ring leader. She’s extremely calm, stable, and sensible. She knows how to get things done and finds a way to lessen the impact of problems that faces them. “What can I do to help?”

Nayeon takes a sip of water. “How do we disappear without worrying all the other people involved with us?” Jeongyeon clasps her hands together and sighs. “You just go. I will handle the aftermath.”

Jihyo shook her head. “Our problem is Dahyun and Mina. They’re far too close with Nayeon and Sana. We can’t just let them leave them without a word.” Sana shook her head as well. “No… I’m fine with it. Dahyun is going to be okay.”  Jeongyeon and Jihyo looked at the troubled fate of Nayeon. Nayeon couldn’t speak a word and couldn’t find things to say. When it’s Mina, I lose.

“Are you going to be okay, Chaeyoung?” Jihyo asked. Chaeyoung nodded. “Chou Tzuyu was meant to go to LA anyway and I will stand by it.”

After a while of silence, Jeongyeon stopped it by her chuckle. “Did we live long?” And she looks at Nayeon. Nayeon gave her a small smile. “80 years, you oldie” Jeongyeon laughed at it. She can’t believe she’s inside a room with people who know she dies already. Jeongyeon stood up and smiled. “It was nice meeting all of you in this timeline.”

Nayeon walked Jeongyeon out and she felt her heart was lighter than before. “Did Momo live long?” Nayeon stopped and faced Jeongyeon. “72.” A tear fell into Jeongyeon’s eyes as soon as she heard it. “I have to endure 8 years without her then? That brat.” She chuckles. “Thank you, Nayeon. I hope I meet you in my other life”

-

Time went by. They didn’t change much of what they do daily. Sana still worked at Dahyun’s. Nayeon would either go to Mina or stay with Chaeyoung. Jihyo would go with Jeongyeon and talk about other things. Chaeyoung talks with Tzuyu a lot and spends her time with Momo at Kim Ds.

Dahyun is a fan of gatherings. She wants all her loved ones surrounding her even for just an hour or two. It was the 24th of December when she called for everyone to hung out at the restaurant. Mina and Nayeon went together with the rest.

It was past 1 in the morning when all of them were sitting there, not drunk, but just talking to each other. Jeongyeon thought it’ll be best to end things like this. So she advised Sana about this. She looks over at Nayeon, and she clearly sees how Nayeon holds Mina near, and dearly. Not yet. Not yet. Jeongyeon stood up and sat closer to Nayeon. Nayeon knows what she will say and she doesn't want to hear it at all. Because she’s trying to figure it out herself. The clock is ticking.

She stood up and grabbed Mina with her outside. “It’s cold here” Mina blurted out and put her hand inside her jacket. Nayeon’s tears began to fall as she looked at Mina. “Hey. Hey, why are you crying?“ Mina held Nayeon’s face, attempting to wipe her tears away. “I need to go, Mina.”

“To where?” She says as she continues to wipe the tears. “I have to, okay? Please don’t get too mad at me” she stopped and looked into Nayeon’s eyes. She was serious this time. “I won’t get mad but you have to tell me where you’re going.” Nayeon shook her head. “Mina, I don’t want you to know that” She took a step away from Nayeon and exhaled loudly. “Nayeon, what is this? What are you trying to do?” She put her hands back on her jacket. “I need to go back where I belong. I have to!”

She says before she turns around and leaves Mina. Mina was too mad to even think carefully.

And soon, Mina realized it too late.

The four girls went to prepare themselves. The capsule was in Nayeon’s hands. Sana was holding her own. Jeongyeon tagged along because she wanted to see it work. Nayeon gave her one last box of xylitol gum to Jeongyeon as a souvenir. Jeongyeon takes a look at the box and the expiration date is set to 3002/02/02. It pleases her. It was real. Time travelling is possible.

They recalled the precautionary measures and once it’s done, Nayeon inhales deeply. She looks at Sana and smiles. “I would love to meet you again in our original timeline, Sana.”

She then looked at Jeongyeon and nodded. “Explain it well to Mina. She would never understand it with me, but she will with a Scientist.” Jeongyeon nodded.

“Tell Chou Tzuyu that everything she do will be a success! Because that will boost her confidence. She should stay away from alcohol too because she became addicted to it at some point…. but no matter what, she will do great.” Chaeyoung laughs loudly as soon as she finishes her sentence.

Sana didn’t really need to tell Dahyun anything about time travelling. It wouldn’t matter because of their fate together anyway. She simply told Dahyun she would disappear because of how complicated things have been. Sana knows Dahyun will overcome it even though she saw Dahyun cried that night.

Jihyo tuts at Jeongyeon. “Why didn’t you live for 1000 years. We could have been having fun there” Jeongyeon laughs. “You want to have fun with an oldie that’s a thousand years old? I highly doubt I’ll be even able to breathe by myself”

“If ever things are still okay back there, I will give you a call.” Jihyo said.

Jihyo never did.

Back in the year 3002, Jihyo, Nayeon, and Chaeyoung separated ways. Jihyo went to Busan to study, Nayeon vanished, and Chaeyoung stayed in the apartment to study more about the space continuum. This was part of the plan that when they go back, they should spend time with themselves. They haven’t found Sana yet, because she didn’t want to be seen and they understand why.

It was a year after and it was early June. It was time for them to meet up. Chaeyoung bleached her hair while Jihyo has longer hair. Nayeon entered the room and saw two of her friends she dearly miss. She cut her hair short and dyed it brown. She also stopped wearing glasses at times. “Anniversary is coming up, huh?” Chaeyoung smiled and nodded. She pulled out the capsule and laid it at the table. Nayeon exhales and nods to herself. “Before we destroy it, I have to do something. Do you allow me?” Chaeyoung nodded. “As long as you know what you’re doing.”

Nayeon pulled out a paper from her pocket and showed it to the girls. “Just have to deliver a message a year late.”

Nayeon was in 1999. She visited the park that was already built. She sat down and admired the children that were enjoying the newly installed seesaw and swings. It was 4pm. Mina will be out of work soon and will eventually go here. Nayeon sighs and takes a look at the paper she was holding one last time.

She looked under her bench and grabbed a rock to avoid the paper being flown away by the wind. She smiled and walked her way back to Seoul Central Station.

Thirty minutes later, Mina arrived at the bench and saw the paper. Her heart dropped and she immediately opened the paper. There it says:

“On the 22nd of September 1997, I said my good morning, hello, and I love you to you. On the 25th of December 1997, I bid you a farewell. I don’t regret meeting you even if it meant that I can destroy the future but hey, if you read this message that means I didn't! I’m sorry I couldn’t stay. You know why, right? I cherish all the moments we are together even after a thousand years from there, realistically.

I travelled back here because I want to say that all my yeses belongs to you.

Mina, I will love you for 1000 years. and forever.” - N

Mina stares at the distance as her tears begin to fall. She looks back and forth to the paper and to the distance. “Nayeon, I love you a thousand years back. And forever.”

Mina smiles the wildest at the sky above her.

“I’ll see you later, Nayeon.”
