Work Text:
November 15th, 1980. Ask anyone what significance that day had for them, most will probably look at you weird and say no. Now, if you ask that question to a way older Robin Arellano, he would answer that it was the night he shared his first dance with Finney Shaw, his future husband. In fact, this future Robin could describe in detail that night but this isn’t in the future, this is the present day when this moment happened.
Robin was walking from a local bodega, flipping a quarter into the air to keep himself entertained in the short back home. He had picked up some Cokes, a bag of chips, and two sandwiches– a turkey and cheese for Finney and a reuben for himself. Earlier that day, Robin had asked Finney over the phone if he wanted to stay for the night, something the boys have been doing a lot more frequently lately. Ever since that October night the two shared their first kiss, the both of them decided to take things slow, by gosh they haven’t even had a “proper” date yet.
Tonight, Robin had a plan. The two will have dinner, Robin will put on a horror movie, protect the cute boy that will be right next to him, and then find the perfect moment to ask him to be his boyfriend. It seemed simple and easy enough.
Finally arriving at his house, Robin looked at his clock and realized he had 20 minutes to get his house prepared. Quickly making sure any trash was thrown away and that house was orderly, set his bag full of their dinner on his bed, and grabbed what movie they will be watching (‘Carrie’ seemed to be the movie that night) all with five minutes to spare. Using the remainder of his time making sure he looked presentable, the older was knocked out of his trance when he heard knocking on the door. After a quick slap across his cheeks to get him pumped for later that night.
Throwing the door open, what stood in front of the shorter was Finney, the boy whose laugh sounded like the sweetest symphony, who shows Robin his feelings not verbally but instead by moving Robin’s out from his eyes and gently swiping his thumb across the shorter’s thumb. Oh, how he made Robin feel like he was the only boy in the universe and for all he knew, he probably was in Finn’s eyes. The younger yet taller of the two lights up with his breathtaking smile, the one where his eyes look like a crescent moon. Stepping slightly out of the way to make room for Finn, he walks through the door that goes into the Arellano’s home, swooping down quickly to give the host a kiss on the cheek. Starstruck for a second, Robin rubbed the cheek that was graced with the love of his life’s lips with a look on his face only Finn was lucky enough to see.
Turning around to face the taller, Robin saw him start to walk towards his room to put his stuff up. Robin quickly followed him, not wanting to be away from him any longer. In his room, Robin quickly put in the mixtape his sister made a while ago, and started taking the food and drinks out of the bag and setting it on his bed while Finney got comfy sitting on the floor. Shortly after, Robin brought the food down and followed Finney’s steps to get comfy, and the two fell quickly into conversation
“I never wanna hear you say that again.” Finney laughed out.
Calming his own laughs, Robin took a breath and replied to him, “Say what? The guy talked like he was slobbering on a dick?”
“Yes! I feel like it’s demeaning, and not to mention gross while we eat.” Finney shook his head, the hair on top of it trying to keep up with the direction it was moving. Robin was trying to describe the bodega’s cashier’s voice, a very ugly noise coming out of it that Robin had to try and not laugh at to his face. Trying to defend himself, the voice in his throat died as soon as he heard the start of a song his sister swore she didn’t put onto the mixtape– a song she swore described what feelings Robin was feeling for his best friend. Quickly feeling his face heat up as Olivia Newton-John’s voice sang out from his boombox, he tried to reach over to skip to the next song when Finney grabbed his wrist.
Without saying a word, Finney brought his hand from the shorter’s wrist to his hand, and with barely any trouble, picked Robin up from his spot. Once they were both standing up, Finney very anxiously wrapped his arms around Robin’s neck. Realizing what Finney wanted to do, the older gulped and rested his arms around Finney’s waist. What was, at first, very awkward soon turned into comfortable swaying to the music. As the song got closer to the chorus, the two boys found themselves being drawn towards each other, getting closer to one another. Suddenly, being brought out of his trance, Finn softly starts to sing along.
“I'm out of my head, Hopelessly devoted to you.”
In that moment, it clicked fully why his sister compared the song to his feelings for the shaggy-haired boy. Robin would do anything for Finney. Those simple two sentences sparked feelings that Robin never knew were in him, being buried deep within his heart. At that moment, Robin didn’t want to follow his plan. He didn’t want to wait til later to become this beautiful boy’s boyfriend. He couldn’t let the possibility with him chickening out make the two wait longer for one another. So, without another though Robin blurted out the words he was psyching himself up for.
“Finney, will you be my boyfriend?”
The younger stopped singing and softly looked at Robin, answering his question with a peck on his lips, showing but not telling his emotions.
