Language of Flowers

Summary:

Ash and Delphia are spending time together.

Work Text:

Ash was laying with their head on their arm in the clearing of flowers with Delphia. She was reading a newly published idea from mortals. Something about a flower language. They had heard of it too, a number of flowers were insulted by the assigned meeting. Their own flower was laughing at a lot of the meanings. She seemed to find them completely wrong.

“Ash, did you know that roses all mean love, but the colors change it?” she asked. They smiled, the roses did like the meaning they received.

“Yes, I believe I should make sure to give you red ones,” they chuckled. She laughed at their words leaning back to look up at their eyes.

“If you give me a yellow one I’ll be sad!”

“Why would that be, my flower?”

“They mean friendship, telling me you only think I’m a friend now would be mean.” Ash laughed and smiled at her again.

“I promise you my flower, I would only give you ones that mean love if I used the language mortals came up with.”

“Good.”

She moved where she was sitting to be right on their arm. She started to read out meanings she found interesting. It was nice to see her excited about something the mortals came up with. She’d been with them more often recently. Alessia had been with them in the clearing at first, but she didn’t share an interest in nature. Delphia seemed to be making quick progress in the book of meanings.

“Ash I think the ones who came up with this didn’t know about a lot of the flowers that exist.”

“I don’t doubt that, mortals are sadly limited in how far they can reach. Unlike the two of us they cannot hear the voices or ask to see one of each flower for their studies.” They moved one of their hands closer and patted her head.

“Maybe I should find who’s doing this and learn where the meanings come from. I could just show them what’s missing as well.” They smiled again, she made them smile all the time. They carefully wrapped their fingers around her and turned her to face them.

“I think that could be a risk, for you and the one with this language of flowers.” She pouted, but nodded in agreement.

Delphia tapped their fingers so they curved their hand. They let her fall onto her palm and get comfortable there. Days like this in the quiet of the mortal realm were nice. Delphia being in a world suited to her size always made Ash feel better. She had a place to belong when they were overwhelming. They rested their hand just below their eyes.

“I have a question for you,” she started. They hummed, leaning a bit closer to her. “These flowers weren’t in the book. They only exist here for you, me, and Alessia. I don’t doubt you two make that happen. What would they mean in the language of flowers?”

They tilted their head and looked over the clearing of ever blooming flowers. These existed for Delphia, they were meant to symbolize their flower. They studied the small blooms and looked into her curious gaze. They could think of a million meanings, but they wanted the right one. She started to fidget, she thought they’d gotten angry. She always jumped to the wrong conclusions. She looked ready to take back her question.

“I believe these have a few meanings. Beauty, unending strength, relentless kindness, eternal selflessness, pure curiosity-”

“Why does it have so many meanings?” She had turned red before managing to ask.

“Because I made them to represent you, they should describe you.”

She sputtered looking for words. They just smiled and gently kissed her. The language of flowers was strange. Mortals had odd ideas of what each plant meant. They would happily use it to see their flower like this more often.
