Work Text:

there are two things yeonjun loves more than anything in the world. he likes a lot of things, including the fresh smell of rain after it has stopped, the way his back cracks when he lays down on his bed after a long, exhausting day, and the way the sun sets

there’s a thousand things he likes but love is another different story. when you love, you everything else after that are just bland. it’s incomparable.

to begin with the first one, he loves coffee. black coffee especially. the way they accompany him from his university days until he has become a full fledged prosecutor has given yeonjun a sense of familiarity and warmth overtime.

he still remembers when he argues with taehyun because he had forced him to taste his coffer order. it was americano with extra two shots. the bitter taste that lingered in his mouth made him absolutely detested that drink.

however, when the grandchild of the person who adopted him kept making coffee, yeonjun had no choice but to drink it. days passed and yeonjun thought, maybe the bitter taster wasn't that bitter after all. that's how he learned to love coffee.

"where's the evidence i told you to pick up?" yeonjun asks, skimming through the piles of paper on his desk, looking for the case file. he bites his lower lip, frowning at the lack of information.

the case he has received this time isn't that simple. an old woman is arrested for murder charges, not one, but four of them. she insisted she is innocent multiple times and yeonjun needs to find evidence that clearly shows she is the murderer.

yeonjun receives no reply so he looks up only to meet a nervous pair of eyes that immediately looks away the moment they met. the rookie, hueningkai now is standing up, clasping his hands together, looking at the floor as if the floor who's talking to him.

"uhh...i'm sorry i'll pick it up right now!" he stutters, making yeonjun sighs.

"never mind i'll pick it up myself," yeonjun grumbles, clicking the mouse a few times to close his computer. he stands up and waste no time to grab his coat from the rack and wears them, getting ready to go out.

he pays no attention to the rookie in his office as he steps out of the room. however it doesn't past him the way the rookie still looking at the ground, feeling guilty.

his superior has told him hueningkai is the student that scores the highest in the bar exam this year so naturally it falls on yeonjun's hands to guide him as a fellow graduate from the same university. yeonjun wouldn't have batted an eye at him if he knew the boy was ridiculously stupid on things that weren't on the syllabus.

"ssup yeonjun," a voice calls him when he closes the door to his office. he turns his head to the source of the voice and see beomgyu, his fellow prosecutor that's younger than him by two years. though he's a lot more older that brat never treats him like one.

"where are you going?" he asked, sipping some coffee he had just bought.

"the police," yeonjun answer and beomgyu scrunches his nose.

"stop working so hard, the detective complained a lot saying he sees your face more than his fellow detectives."

"if someone actually does his work properly then maybe i don't have to go to the police this often," yeonjun defends.

it's not like he's blind. he saw the detectives's face whenever he made a trip there. when working, one needs to be meticulous. his job involves people's lives. one wrong move and their whole world will turn upside down.

"just ease it a bit, nothing good will come if you be on their bad side."

"how long you've been in this?"he asks, but he isn't looking for an answer. "you should now by now that prosecutor and police will never be on the same side,"

yeonjun made his closing statement before leaving beomgyu there, alone. working as a prosecutor means a lot of people will be your enemy. whether you do it right or not, you're bound to make enemies on either sides.

the police has always been chaotic. load of people are the there, arrested from the simplest crime to the heaviest one. but crime is still crime, it doesn't matter the weight. what's wrong is still wrong, no one can say otherwise.

you can't commit a crime and call it justices because at the end of the day, the fact that you hurt someone or somehow implicate other party is always going to be there.

"yeonjun-ssi?" yeonjun halts his way to the crime investigation unit when someone greets him.

"what are you doing here?" dino asked, his big wide eyes are staring at him with something he can't decipher.

dino may be the only detective around this police station that doesn't treat him like he's some sort of plague. though he never minds that kind of treatment. he knows they're just mad he won most of the cases he handled.

"i need to pick up the evidence,"

confusion are visible on his face as he says, "that's not your job from what i know,"

"yeah," yeonjun scratches his head, "my rookie is kinda useless,"

yeonjun's answer makes the former one chuckles, "we're all at his point. just give him some times, he'll get around,"

nodding at dino, yeonjun gratefully smiles. he  remembers how he is on the first day at work. tripping and dropping everything on the floor. it was embarrassing to say the least.

"after this wanna grab some coffee? there's new café around here." dino gulpes down, hesitantly asking the prosecutor.

but yeonjun shook his head apologetically. "nah i'll pass, i don't drink coffee,"

he checks his watch, missing the detective's disappointed expression,  "sorry i need to go, we'll talk again later."

dino nods along, letting yeonjun pass by him.

the crime investigation unit is full today with bunch of criminals sitting on the chair. the detectives are screaming in frustration because most of them are not willing to cooperate. he ignores the annoyed look they give to him when he waltzes in and walks straight to detective lee dokyeom who is the one handling the case.

there are two guys sitting in front of him, head lowered, as he asks them continuously the same question.

"don't you both have any relative? parents? brother? sister?" dokyeom looks at them both respectively but both don't answering. his frustration is now out open. he doesn't even bother to hide it anymore.

"why are you so quiet? where's the attitude you both give when you're fighting?" he raises his voice higher but still gets no response from them.

"why? don't want your family to know you're fighting like you want to kill each other at the university?"

when he doesn't receive yet any response, dokyeom sighs in defeat and leans against his chair. he closes his eyes for a moment to relax and when he opens his eyes, he is met with someone that makes his frustration even larger.

"yeonjun-ssi?" he asks, doesn't want to believe the man in front of him is real. yeonjun smiles which makes dokyeom groan. his tiredness consume him a lot until he doesn't notice how both of the boys lower their head even more at the mentioned name.

"i don't have time so make it quick," he weakly says.

yeonjun takes a few steps closer, only a few inches from the boys, "originally i want to pick up the evidence that my rookie forgot but now--" yeonjun smiles, placing his hands on both of the boys' shoulders. " i run into some people i know here,"

"isn't that right soobin? jihoon?" he smiles, peering at them both.

dokyeom sit straighter at yeonjun's sentence, puzzling look on his face "you know them both?"

"of course, and in fact, jihoon's father is on his way now," yeonjun informs, massaging jihoon's shoulder when the former looks at him in horror.

"why did you call my father?!" jihoon shouts as shot out from his seat.

yeonjun raises his hands up, seeing jihoon's defensive stands.

"chill out, you don't want to mess with me,"

and yeonjun is right. jihoon can't mess with him. yeonjun has helped his family before and his father is greatly indebted to him to the point his father warns him to never mess with yeonjun in any way.

jihoon chews his lips, clenching his fist before sitting back down as he glares at dokyeom.

"what about this boy?" awkwardly dokyeom's attention shifts to another boy who is glaring nonstop at him since they arrived. there are bruises all over his face showing he's the one who receives hit the most between them.

yeonjun suspiciously smiles making dokyeom grows uneasy, "his guardian is here already,"

"who?" he asks, taken aback by the prosecutor answer.

"me, i'm his husband,"

dokyeom chokes on air and jihoon stares at soobin, perplexed.

"he's your husband?" jihoon points at soobin,  asking him in disbelief tone.

"fucking hell," soobin mutters under his breath, but yeonjun still hears him.

"yes he is." he ruffles soobin's hair. "now let's go back,"

soobin remains seated, his piercing gaze fixed on Dokyeom,, "i don't want to,"

"choi soobin," yeonjun changes his tone, "let's go back."

at that order, soobin rolls his eyes and stands up as he grumbles, "this is annoying,"

"wait for me in the car, i need to settle this," yeonjun pockets his car key and place it on soobin's hand. without wasting any time, soobin walks away, not wanting to be in a close proximity with the prosecutor.

but he did spare a glance again when he was about to exit the crime investigation unit. the last thing he saw was yeonjun whispering something to jihoon but he paid no attention.

what soobin doesn't know is that the color drains from jihoon's face right after yeonjun he left.

the words echoes in his head for so long as he continuously to remind himself.

don't mess with soobin.

"soobin is still learning about this world and i am very much protective of him so next time don't touch my husband or i'll make your life a living hell.

there are two things yeonjun loves more than anything in the world. coffee that soobin makes and soobin.

but he isn't going to tell his husband that yet.
