Work Text:
Alpha katsuki ran away with his pregnant mate, omega Izuku in his bunker with everything they stocked and needed to survive for two years. Izuku was seven months pregnant, and he had to deal with his pregnancy while katsuki often watched outside if anyone or any zombie attacked.
It was their life, since that day, Izuku was protected inside the bunker, and when they needed food, katsuki was the only one to go outside.
Months later, Izuku gave birth to a beautiful girl with blond hair, beautiful eyes being a mix between the red crimson eyes of katsuki and the green emeralds of Izuku, and chubby freckled cheeks. The little pup was called Katsumi and was loved, but both of his parents, when Izuku was exhausted, katsuki let his mate sleep and took care of the tiny pup in his arms.
Life continues with joy and happiness. They both enjoyed raising their daughter together in this bunker if this meant protecting her from the outside. The family shared beautiful and unique moments like her first word, her first step, and the first time Katsumi called his parents "mommy” and “daddy” with her small voice, making both of them cry.
Months became years, and when Katsumi was 2, Izuku decided to go outside to look for food. He took his pup with him hid their scent to not be recognized and walked far away from the bunker.
Katsumi was crying and Izuku tried his best to calm her; they must be silent, or they’ll be found by zombies and beaten to slowly transform like the others before them. After a few minutes, Izuku succeeds and finds what he is looking for.
Unfortunately, he didn’t notice the man behind him running away and losing blood, calling and begging for help. Izuku and katsuki had one rule: don’t trust strangers, no one is safe here except them.
Izuku’s eyes widened when he saw the stranger’s dead body on the floor, bleeding while his body slowly shook, and the zombie behind him met Izuku’s face. His body moved on its own and The greenette immediately ran away, his legs were painful and his pup was crying into his arm but he didn’t care, all he wanted was to go home safe.
He found the bunker and moved faster, opening the door and giving their daughter to katsuki. The sound behind him was closed, and when he was about the close, the only thing that connected him to the outside was something unexpected happened.
Izuku loudly screamed when he felt teeth on his arms, coming deeper into his skin and hurting him. He immediately closed the door and followed the ladder before facing katsuki with a worried gaze.
“What the fuck just happened, Deku?! I told you not to go out when I’m not here-” katsuki yelled while their daughter was closing herself into her sire’s scent.
“I know, kacchan but listen, I needed to find something for Katsumi, nothing to worry about, alright I’m good !” izuku smiled while stroking the blond’s cheek with a soft touch, knowing how his mate could be worried.
“Then if you’re fine just like you said, what’s this shit on your arms ?” Katsuki showed the deep injury on izuku’s arms, there was still blood, but they couldn’t ignore it. It seemed deep enough, and the blood was still bleeding, making things more dangerous if Izuku wanted to stay alive. When izuku understood, he immediately put on his clothes to hide, he could heal himself after all.
“It’s nothing. I’m fine, kacchan, it’ll be gone easily,” Izuku said, knowing it was a lie and was scared, even if he refused to show any signs of fear.
—-----
Months later it became worse.
The simple injury and Izuku’s health were slowly taking control of his body, taking all his strength and making him weaker each day, but the omega was hiding it from his mate all this time. Katuski wasn’t dumb or naive; he knew the first red flags of his mate’s sudden behavior, and they realized what this meant in one gaze. They look into each other’s eyes with fear and sadness, knowing the meaning of this bite.
"Kacchan, I’m scared,” Izuku confessed after so many months he cried too. He blamed himself for knowing how all of this was at fault, and who knows if katsuki wasn’t here that day, maybe his daughter could be the first victim, and he refused to believe in this “what if” thing.
They stayed up all night, Izuku’s head on the blond’s chest and their hands intertwining. Their eyes never left how Katsumi was asleep and sleeping peacefully with her chubby face, the same one they had loved since day one.
Katsuki was scared, too, they both knew what would happen to the person who the zombie bit. Even if he was constantly comforting his mate, he couldn’t forget the fact that Izuku was about to lose his humanity and join the enemy outside, but if he could delay it, katsuki was ready to do everything to keep Izuku’s humanity alive.
“I know, but as long as I’m here, everything will be fine” Izuku came closer to him as if he wanted some comfort
Green met red eyes
“we’ll do anything to protect everything we built until now, I won’t let you go so easily, freckles”
Izuku nodded but didn’t seem convinced “If something happens, promise me something, kacchan….promise me that you’ll choose Katsumi over me”
Katsuki’s eyes went wide “Are you fucking serious, Deku? I won’t let you go, and if I have to die, then I’ll do it without hesitation to protect you both” he took his hands and found izuku’s chin “I will always protecting you both alright?”
This time, Izuku didn’t realize how but his vision was blurry because of the tears rolling down his freckled cheeks before he hugged his boyfriend closer ” Thanks, kacchan, but I need you to promise me, for her, please”
Katsuki mumbled a small “tch I promise, but I will never leave you alone, even if you’re a shitty zombie without any Brian or memories, I’ll always stay by your side, nerd”
Izuku smiled back at him, it was the only thing he could do, and he was shaking. The alpha seemed to notice that and hold him closer, maybe he wasn’t the best with words, but his mate knew how devoted he was to his loved one, and somewhere inside his heart, it was what he wanted to hear.
“Do you think..do you think once I’m gone, Katsumi will remember me ?” It was a small question, but Izuku was trying his best not to sob, holding the blond tighter and putting his head in his chest.
“Do you think I’ll let you go so easily? And if, I said /if/ this happens, trust me, nerd, I’ll tell everything to our brat, telling her how her dam was the strongest person I knew, how he was the prettiest man I’ve ever seen and especially how he loved his family until the last second.” He could feel Izuku holding him strongly and said nothing back in answer, his strong hands ruffled his green curls and caught the other’s gaze and teary eyes.
” I know this shit is scary, and I’m scared too, losing you or Katsumi isn’t a solution to me. I will fight until the end for you, us, and this family, alright? No matter what happens, I’ll always remind her everything about you, what you liked, your favorite song, what your f was, and keep your memory and presence in her life alive. Then, when my time has come, she’ll be the one to tell this story about two young people running away and hiding themselves in a bunker to her children, don’t worry, izuku..I’ll make you she remember you because you’re more important than you think.”
Izuku was sure he was sobbing again, but his heart stopped when he felt katsuki’s strong hands sue king his freckled cheeks and whip his tears, there was this soft gaze in his eyes which always made izuku’s heart melt.
They both lived close enough to feel each other’s breath and in the next second, katsuki’s lips were on Izuku’s. It wasn’t a passionate kiss like they casually did, this time, it was tender and slow, the way katsuki was taking his time to show him how he loved him with one kiss. Izuku found himself closing his eyes and lost himself to the familiar touch; in another context, this kiss would be romantic, but right now, it was probably the saddest one they ever had.
Katsuki was here to remind him how he was loved, how their lips were finding each pitcher into this soft and tender kiss, how their hands found the other’s body and branded them closer. When Izuku deepened the kiss, it was an answer, an answer to show his worries and his love for katsuki at the same time.
They didn’t need to talk to know, it was their way to comfort the other, and they just wanted to feel their loved ones’ warmth.
——
The danger grew daily, silently gnawing and destroying izuku's body. Starting with his eating habits, aggressiveness, isolation, and increasingly strange behavior. Izuku had come to a point where he could no longer or very little carry Katsumi before she began to cry.
Soon he had to go, he knew it, yet he wasn’t ready. Everything he planned for his daughter, his life with katsuki, their future, and what could only be a memory soon and nothing to him, every hope they both had about this place and growing up with Katsumi as a happy family was fading days by days.
Katsuki was scared but not physically, even if his mate was one of the people to fight, there was still a part of humanity inside him. He knew that Izuku was the sweetest and the most caring person he had ever met, he was an amazing mate and a lovely dam to Katsumi.
Izuku became weaker one night, so he wrote the last letter. If he could use his humanity, let’s use it for the people he loved the most.
Pretending to be okay when you were mentally losing yourself was something Izuku wouldn’t have expected if someone had told him years ago.
Izuku’s state was getting worse, and one day, it happened suddenly, but Izuku transformed himself into one of them.
No one knows how and when this transformation is happening, but Izuku is the only one to know.
Everything was scary, more scarring than they expected, and katsuki was lost: he was trying to protect Katsumi while Izuku, the person he loves the most, was losing his humanity in front of him.
it was quite simply a scene straight out of a horror movie, panic invading them, izuku's gaze transforming into something supernatural yet keeping that same worried air. Those freckles disappear, giving way to a monster adorning the young man's possession. Katsuki was trying his best not to shoot, to protect his pup AND his mate, knowing that there must be another solution to save him.
He couldn’t do it, not to him, no to the man he loved since their childhood and until his last moment, the man who brought joy and happiness in his life when he couldn’t find it, the one who gave him a reason to wake up every morning to see his stupid smiles and his laugh.
A loud sound resonates and plunges the room into silence, the space is now empty, and katsuki distinguishes unknown silhouettes above the stairs with a gun, indicating that they had just fired.
Izuku's body shook before falling to the floor, blood pouring all over the floor while he shared a last gaze with katsuki. Even if he lost his humanity, katsuki could recognize those eyes, the same green emerald eyes that never left him and the tears that came out of them. Katsuki watches the tears fall down the freckled cheeks, feeling his chest having several feelings.
He wanted to scream, cry, and yell at this bastard that they killed the man he loved, and they couldn’t go back now. Katsuki was holding his daughter closer, Katsumi seemed to have himself closer to him, and no one said anything. The dark gaze on the blond’s face when he meets the stranger’s eyes.
“What did you just do fuckers”
The strangers look at each other with curious gazes “We saved your life, this monster was about to attack you and your child; you could thank us !”
Katsuki made a bitter laugh “Don’t you dare call him a monster again; you know nothing about him and how he did his best to sacrifice himself until the end for us, his family. So no, you didn’t save me, bastard, you ruined my life…..you want me to thank you because you killed my mate? My omega and my daughter’s dam? In your dream, bastard, even if he was transformed, he was still my mate, even until the end”
———
They both stayed alone a moment before another group of people, a bunch of extras, came and helped him. Katsuki refused at first, saying he didn’t need their help, but one day, one of the group members asked katsuki what had happened. It’s been months since his mate’s death, and before realizing it, the blond sobbed and told them the story.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know bakugo,” Mina said as she had this sad gaze on her face
“I feel like shit, you have no idea what it’s like to lose the most important person in your life and see her dying in front of you. I just wish…I wish to see him again and apologize for everything.” Katuski ended up confessing, and the girl put her hands on his shoulder, catching his attention
“I know exactly what you feel, Bakugo. I also lost my husband, Kirishima eijiro, who died because he saved me. You don’t have to feel bad about what happened because none of this was your fault, it’s okay to cry and to be weak. You’re human, and no one is asking you to be strong and perfect, especially with what you just lived and how this will forever stay in your mind. But I think one day your daughter will understand why you fight and how strong you are for her,” Mina said with a comfortable tone, knowing the right words to say because even she hasn’t moved on since her husband’s death.
In the end, katsuki took a year to learn to trust people and watch his daughter grow up just like the nerd. She was exactly like him, and this comforted him because a part of Izuku was still living in his life, and this time, he’d do anything to protect her, to make his mate happy and proud of where he was.
————
Later, katsuki found the letter izuku wrote for him and read it while Katsumi asked, “Daddy do you know when mommy is back ?”
Katsuki was crying and took his daughter and whispered, “Your mom…won’t come back, princess”
The same night, he couldn’t help but cry silently, thinking about what he had just read.
"Dear Kacchan,
It’s strange to write this knowing what is expecting me soon, but I feel like it’s the right thing to do before dying. Death has always scared me and made me think about what would happen if this happened to me one day, but now I’m sure I can be reassured. You must ask yourself why. I think you already know the answer, but the time I’ve spent with you and the things you’ve said to me is enough to know you’ll be a good dad to our daughter. I saw how you looked at her the day she was born and how you were already ready to sacrifice everything just for her happiness. This might be one of the reasons why leaving her is the most complicated thing, but I'm sure that by your side she’ll be happy just like I was.
I already see you commenting on this with « tch, what a shitty nerd,» but everything I’ve said is true and was always true—each moment and each second I’ve spent with you made me realize how I was lucky to have someone like you by my side from day one. I was scared not to say how much I loved you enough when I was younger, and it might be crazy because it’s only when the end is close that I recognize the important meaning of those words. I wish I had told you about this, about my bitting earlier, and maybe things could be different, but I wanted to protect you and Katsumi, keeping you both safe as I was enjoying each day as if it was the last.
Maybe you didn’t notice when you were asleep and how I was sobbing the night, thinking about how I was conscious about everything I would leave behind me. All my memories, all the most important moments in my life, such as our first meeting, first kiss, first day, the first time we confessed to each other, or even when we looked at each other when you were holding Katsumi the first time. It’s something I could never forget, and if I have to go, I’ll remember them until the end. I’m not going to leave you, and I will never because I’m sure somewhere else, I’ll be able to observe you, observe Katsumi as you get older, and be proud of the people you are now.
Don’t think that writing this letter isn’t painful because I didn’t tell you the number of times I rewrote it to find the exact words to express my feelings. I couldn’t lie when I say how much I cried when I realized how I was going to miss a lot of things, but I’m sure you’ll be here, you’ll be here for her just like you were with me and give her all the love our daughter deserves.
I cherish each moment, each kiss, each hug, and every touch we have. You bring me joy and happiness, even comfort when I need it the most, and I can’t imagine a life without you. You bring me more than you could imagine, and leaving you, leaving Katsumi and everything we fought for and built, is probably the most painful thing I’ve done.
The truth is…I’m scared. I’m afraid to let everything go and wake up the next day and realize it’s too late, how your face will be full of fear or wondering if you would fight or not against me to save Katsumi and you. Death is scary, but staying by your side, learning all those things, and realizing our mistakes was a part of my realization. I should be scared about dying, but I don’t think the whole “death” thing scared me, but mostly the feeling attached to it. I know Katsumi is in safe hands with you. You’re already giving the best for her, so promise me you will always do your best to make her happy. I love you both more than anyone else in this world, and if something happened to one of you at my fault, I would never be able to forgive myself.
I wish I could see your face reading this, you’ll probably cry because I’ll be gone, and this idea broke my heart. I know you’re stronger than you think kacchan, no matter what happens and where I am, I will /always/ be by your side and be proud of you because I love you.
I wish I could hug you one last time, hold you close, and tell you how I’m proud of the person you are now.
I hope you understood my choice about sacrificing myself to save you both, but you grew up with me, so you already know the story, I guess.
Take care of yourself, take care of Katsumi, and don’t forget how much I love you.
-Izuku Midoriya »
Katsumi was too young to realize it, and years later, when katsuki thought she was old enough to read the letter and the content, noticing how her face slowly transformed into something happy at the first words before tuning into sobs when she reached the end.
« Dear Katsumi,
This feels so strange, writing this when you’re only three years old and having the idea of you being someone older and reading this when I’ll be gone.
Words can’t express how much I love you, how much your dad and I love you more than anything. I wish things were different, and the environment where you grew up was healthy and safe, but we can’t control things.
Let me tell you the story about two guys. Those two guys grew up in the same neighborhood and were childhood friends, they both had good and bad periods in life, but this was a part of their journey. In the end, they were both grateful for everything they had until now because if things were different, maybe they’d never end up together and have a wonderful daughter.
Now the two are kacchan and I. I won’t tell you the whole story because it’ll be too long, but you can still ask your dad; I’m sure he’ll love to tell you more about me, about us when I’m gone.
The day you were born was the most important moment in our life, words can’t be described to explain how we were, how holding you in our arms for the first time was the moment when I knew I had a new reason to live, a new reason to fight for and someone to protect with my own life. I will never forget the day I learned how I was pregnant and how your dad’s face immediately smiled before turning into a huge smile and crying before holding me and saying how happy he was.
If one day you have doubts, wrong ideas about me, kacchan, or just us not loving you enough, think about my words, sweetie. You were and will always be the best thing in our life. We tried for years before finally having you, and once we had you? We always refused to let you go because you were our daughter, our sunshine, our baby, and the most important person in our life. We will always be proud of you, no matter what you say, what you do, or even if you feel bad sometimes, think about how we did our best to give you the best life in the worst condition. I know dealing with someone’s death is hard, especially when it’s about the person who loved you since day one and gave birth, but I’m sure you’ll be able to do it. You and your dad are the strongest people I’ve met until now, I always believed in you two, and I knew one day you’d be able to be a great person, someone talented, kind, adorable, funny, and just like me, stubborn.
When I hold you in my hands, ruffling your freckled cheeks as you talk to me about what you would love to do in the future, I listen and nod because this is your dream. Unfortunately, I’m not sure you can’t be a fairy in this world, but I’m sure you’ll be the best fairy. I know where I’m going, don’t worry, it’s not a scary place, just somewhere people are destined to go one day. Maybe for me, it’s too early, and I’ll be the one to miss everything, your first crush, your first heartbreak, your first day at school, if there’s one in the future, or even your wedding. I’ll be absent that day, just like the other, but you need to know how I’ll/always/ be there for you, even when you think I can’t hear or see you when you have this need to talk to me, I will always be there to hear you even if I am not able to answer you.
Don’t think this is okay for me to leave you, your dad, and you because you two are the most important people in my life… If I did this, it was for your protection, for your lives, and to give you a better future. I wish I could take you in my arms right now and tell you how much I love you and how much you bring me so much joy in my life. It will never be enough because each day spent with you is the reason why I keep fighting until the end, for kacchan, for you, and for the people I love.
Don’t be sad when I leave you, sweetie. I know that’ll be painful, thinking it wasn’t deserved and how it was your fault, but it’s not. It will never be your fault, you are and will always be the happiest thing in my life, the goal of our journey. I’m not sure how or when you’ll read that letter, but I’m sure you’re older with your messy green curls and the same red eyes you had the day you were born. You’re probably a strong and beautiful young woman determined to do what she likes, and I often think about how you’ll look like me while growing up.
I hate to write this, to write this with tears knowing it’ll be the last time I’ll be able to talk to you, but I’m sure tomorrow you’ll wake up and smile at me, giggling and telling me how you dreamed about this strange creature half unicorn and half something that only you know I guess?
So yeah, let kacchan do things even if it’s not perfect, even if sometimes he doubts himself and his abilities. Don’t forget to stay by his side. You both need each other, maybe more than anyone when I am gone, but I have no doubt that I always believed in you, and don’t forget how much I love you, how you were the reason for my happiness.
I wish you the best, be who you are, who you want to be, love who you want, and be yourself because I'm proud of you and will always be proud of you. Never forget that.
With all my love to my sweet and amazing daughter Katsumi bakugo Midoriya
- Izuku Midoriya »
Katsuki also cried reading those words and knowing how they were sincere, how he could feel the pain and the love as if he was here with him, with this memory of the man he loved.
Katsumi was shaking and holding her sire tightly. “I’m sorry, Dad, you’re strong, and I think Mom will be proud of you”
Katsuki hugged his daughter back, it’s been years since Izuku died, yet he still lived in his mind. Just like he promised, he was telling their daughter everything about him, to let her know she was loved and no matter what happened, Izuku will always be by their side and protect them
“And I’m sure deku is probably looking at us somewhere and is proud of the amazing person you are now"
Katsumi smiled, which is why katsuki was still doubtful about strangers, except for the extras.
