This poem's motif is ghosts/haunting. From Stede's POV.

Work Text:

The ghost of my father,
He haunts me to this day.
With the knife in his hand,

And death on display.

With blood on his apron,

And blood on his chin.

And his ghost reminds me,

That I’ll never fit in.

The ghost of my enemy,

He haunts me to this day.

With his sword in his eye,

His clothes stained from the spray.

And his words they cut deep,

Like swords or saws.
And his ghost reminds me,

Of all of my flaws.

The ghost of my wife,

She haunts me to this day.

How far from my seat,

At the table she’d stay.

Her eyes fill with disgust,

With each bite that I take.

And her ghost reminds me,

Of all my mistakes.

The ghost of my love,

He haunts me to this day.

I can still feel his kiss,

On my lips, on replay.
I see him in visions,

And I see him in dreams.
And his ghost reminds me,

Of where I’m meant to be.
