June 29th. Jonathan Harker returns to his room and throws himself on his knees. Then, with nothing else to lose, he returns to the library and throws himself on his knees before the Count.

Dracula’s icy fingers stroke lazily up and down Jonathan’s face, as if he were a lapdog rather than a man. ‘So be it,’ Jonathan thinks. ‘Better a live dog than a dead man. If only I can reach home. If only I can reach Mina.’Dracula’s roving fingers draw him out of his own thoughts. He lets his sharp-nailed fingertips drum absently on Jonathan’s cheek.
“You wish to serve me, you say.” His words have the frame of a question, but not the tone of one. Jonathan nods his assent anyways.
“And you would do what for me?”
Jonathan swallows, having the sense that his next words will be his closing statement before judgment is rendered.
“W,whatever you ask,” he says. ‘God forgive me,’ he thinks.
The smile returns to Dracula’s face.
