Work Text:
Seungkwan stared out of the window at the city below. The sky was grey and ominous - a blanket of banality mingling with the towering skyscrapers of Seoul. He could hear the occasional crack of thunder, see the sunlight reflecting off the wet streets, smell the moisture in the air. Rainy season had definitely started.
He looked away from the window down at his phone and frowned. There were a lot of unopened messages, but none from the person he wanted. After staring intently at the screen for a few seconds trying to manifest something, he sighed and started the call.
"Seungkwan?" The voice on the other line sounded sleepy. Seungkwan felt a rush of affection, but also annoyance flood through him.
"Why did you reject my video call?" The icon on the screen was taunting him - he didn't want to see a carefully crafted selfie, he wanted to see his boyfriend. Mingyu sighed.
"Kwannie, I just woke up."
"You just woke up?" Seungkwan glanced up at the clock on the wall, wondering if his phone calendar was out of whack. "It's 11:30!"
"It's my day off." The younger boy sighed. His leg jiggled up and down, the rainy weather outside suddenly making him irritable and restless.
"The weather outside sucks." There was a sound through the phone of movement. Mingyu seemed to strain to look at something, before collapsing back down onto the bed with a thud.
"Wow, it's really raining." Seungkwan tutted. Trust his boyfriend to state the obvious.
"I hate rainy season," he continued, his chin jutting out as he pouted, "it's too hot and it rains too much."
"Hey, plants need rain to survive." Ugh. There he went again with the endless positivity. Seungkwan swore sometimes that Mingyu annoyed him more than he attracted him. It was a very strange combination of disdain and endearment.
"Yeah well they can drink whilst I'm asleep." Mingyu chuckled softly, his voice still a little husky from recently arising. Seungkwan was suddenly hit with an intense longing.
"Turn your camera on." The statement was more of a demand than a request, but he said it in such a whiny way that he cringed at himself.
"Huh?" Mingyu seemed perplexed.
"I want to see you."
"Seungkwan, I literally have the worst bed hair right now, you don't want to see." Seungkwan let out an exclamation of annoyance.
"Mingyuuuu!" he whined, "turn it onnnnnn!" After a sigh and a few seconds of pause, Mingyu's face appeared on the screen.
"Happy now?" Actually, Seungkwan was. Despite his boyfriend's statements to the contrary, he very much wanted to see what was in front of him right now. Mingyu's head was close to the camera, his face half hidden by blankets and his ruffled hair sticking up at hilarious angles. But he still looked like a model.
"How are you this attractive when you've just woken up." Seungkwan meant the statement as a compliment, but somehow it came out sulky again. Mingyu rolled his eyes teasingly.
"Stop it." He attempted to pat down his hair, which only made it more wild, and also displayed his bare chest and arms to the camera. Seungkwan gulped.
"I swear its like dating a Gucci billboard sometimes." Mingyu laughed, scooting even closer to the camera so his eyes and nose almost took up the whole screen.
"You look handsome today." The sudden compliment caught Seungkwan off guard. He spluttered, all his previous bravado eliminated by the smile that spread across his face.
"Really?" He mumured.
"Of course," Mingyu spoke with utter sincerity, as if the statement were the most obvious thing in the world. "I mean, you always look handsome, but did you dress up today?"
"I guess I woke up and decided to do stuff...before I looked outside." The happiness evaporated from Seungkwan's face. The rain had picked up outside and now the buildings were barely visible through the grey. He stared morosely at the scene for a few seconds, before returning to the phone to see Mingyu looking at him with adoration.
"You're so cute when you sulk." The younger boy scowled, turning the phone away so Mingyu couldn't see the delight that coursed through him every time he was praised. He heard him laughing and continued to hold it away, just listening, before suddenly he had an idea.
"Hey," the abrupt return to normal conversation startled Mingyu a little, but he rested his chin on his hands and nodded in interest.
"Hey what"
"Are you doing anything today? Seeing as it's your day off."
"Aside from talking to my beautiful boyfriend? Nope." Seungkwan looked once more at the gloomy sky outside and continued the conversation.
"You should come over."
Mingyu paused. Aside from how he very, very much wanted to jet it to Seungkwan's place that very second, even he, positive by nature, was aware of the weather outside.
"Um..." The pause was all it took for Seungkwan to spiral into his usual doubt.
"You don't want to come over?"
"No!" This time the response was instant. Mingyu kind of hated the way his boyfriend truly believed he wasn't hopelessly in love with him. "Seungkwan you know that's not the reason."
"Then whyyyyyy?" Ok, he was whining. Clearly he wasn't as upset as he was making out.
"Were you not just commenting on the atrocious weather outside?" Seungkwan played dumb.
"Yeah...So what?"
"So, if you don't want your boyfriend to die battling against a hurricane I think you should retract your whining." Seungkwan pouted. Another thing that drove him crazy about his boyfriend was his irrefutable logic.
"It's not even a hurricane..." he mumbled petulantly, looking down at his feet and jutting out his chin. Mingyu smiled.
"We can still talk on here," he said in a gentle voice, "for as long as you want." Seungkwan looked back at the screen, suddenly sad.
"But it's not the same...I miss you." A brief silence fell between the two. Mingyu looked at his boyfriend's glum face and felt another wave of guilt run through him. He really did want to be with him right now.
"I miss you too," he said, looking straight at the camera to show he meant it. "And as soon as-"
Suddenly Mingyu's face froze on the screen. Seungkwan waited for the connection to reset, then shook his phone a few times when nothing happened.
"Mingyu? Mingyu? No no no!" The call dropped. The younger boy looked outside and saw that the rain had picked up even further - a full on storm. The signal in his apartment block was screwed.
"Are you fricking serious?" Throwing his phone angrily onto the couch, Seungkwan flopped down and planted his face into the cushion, wondering what the heck he was going to do for the rest of the day.
--------
When alone, the minutes pass like hours.
Seungkwan got bored of the shows on TV after barely five. He tried looking on various apps for taxis to Mingyu's apartment, but all were either down or not accepting any new customers. He even considered breaking out the Lego set he had meant to give to Jeonghan, but was still sitting in his room. Seungkwan hated the thought of a precious day of no work being totally wasted, but he hated even more that there was no-one here for him to share it with.
12:57
Seungkwan was now counting the seconds on his phone clock. If he closed his eyes and said the word 'sundubu' in between every number, he could successfully estimate 20 seconds. Within the next half hour, he was sure he could work his way up to one minute.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Seungkwan jumped, his phone lurching out of his hands and smacking him in the face.
"Aaah!" Who from his apartment complex was knocking on the door? Perhaps it was the landlord, offering some kind of complimentary phone service, or a mimosa. The thought of any contact with another human filled him with excitement, so he leapt up and ran towards the door. When he opened it, his mouth fell open.
"Hi." There, in the doorway, was the very wet-looking figure of his boyfriend.
"Mingyu!" Seungkwan flew into action, his surprise replaced with utter astonishment at just how bedraggled Mingyu was. Quickly he pulled him inside, shutting the door and noting in horror as he did so that there was a pool of water on the floor outside. "What are you doing here?!"
"I came to see you." Mingyu smiled. His hair was completely drenched, random strands plastered to his face, the others poking up at strange angles. His clothes were also soaked through, completely flush with his skin.
"How did you get here?" Seungkwan asked, still a mixture of shocked and horrified. "Did you walk?"
"No, I took the subway." His boyfriend replied. "But I had to run from the station."
Suddenly Seungkwan ran off into another room. Mingyu debated whether to follow him, but saw how much he was already wetting the floor and decided to stay put. Eventually the other boy returned holding a towel.
"Oh my god." As he wrapped the material around Mingyu and began frantically rubbing his body with it, he looked at him like a mother scolding their child. "You are the biggest idiot I have ever met."
"Are you not happy to see me?" Mingyu squirmed against the rubbing playfully, making Seungkwan hold him tighter in position and fix him with a glare. He was half teasing, but a part of him wondered if the younger boy was actually upset at him for coming. After the words, Seungkwan stopped rubbing, holding Mingyu's face between his hands and looking into his eyes.
"Of course I'm happy." He replied. Slowly, he leant forward and kissed the other boy softly, but deeply. Mingyu responded, lifting up his hand and wedging it lightly into his hair. They kissed happily for a few seconds, before Seungkwan felt wet seeping into his shoulder and shivered.
"You must be freezing." Abruptly he pulled away, then began pulling Mingyu's sodden jacket off his body.
"Woah." Mingyu heard the wet thud of his outer clothing hitting the floor. Next Seungkwan's fingers gripped the bottom of his shirt and began to pull it over his head. "Woah!" The fabric gripped onto his skin, making the younger boy grunt with exertion as he struggled to pull it upwards. Mingyu helped him with the final part, his head emerging with a shower of tiny droplets. He was suddenly wet and shirtless in front of him.
"I know you wanna get me naked, but isn't this a little fast?" Seungkwan ignored the joke.
"Be quiet. Wait here and take your pants off." As he rushed back off into the other room Mingyu let out a chuckle, before he dutifully obeyed the command and began removing his lower clothing.
When Seungkwan returned from his bedroom, he had to pause momentarily in the doorway to take in the full sight of his semi-naked boyfriend in front of him. His boxers had remained relatively unscathed, only a few patches of water on them. The temptation to ask him to take those off too though was too great. Mingyu yanked the final part of his jeans off his foot and looked back up, causing Seungkwan to snap out of his ogling and quickly power-walk back over.
"Here you go." He held out the clothing he had pulled from his closet - the biggest pieces he could find to adequately cover his boyfriend's giant frame. Mingyu look at them hovering in the air in front of him, and paused.
"Well hold on now," he began. Seungkwan frowned in confusion. Was something wrong with the clothes?
"What's wrong?" He asked, a little defiantly. Mingyu held out his hands.
"Aren't we being a little hasty to re-clothe? I think you also got a little wet..." As a grin spread across his face, Seungkwan realised what he meant. His cheeks flushed bright red.
"Mingyu, you're going to get sick if you don't warm up."
"Well I can think of another way for my body temperature to rise..." Hands reached out to take hold of him, strong hands that were utterly inviting... Seungkwan pushed them aside and shoved the clothes into Mingyu's chest.
"Put these on. Now."
Five minutes later the two were sat together on the couch. Seungkwan had brought his hairdryer and was currently sat with his legs either side of Mingyu's lap, carefully blow drying his hair. As much as Mingyu had protested, he had to admit he felt a lot better now with clothes on. Seungkwan's lips were pursed in concentration, his hands gently raking through his boyfriend's hair as he held up all the strands to the hot air.
"You're good at this," Mingyu murmured. With the warmth of the air, and the heat of the other boy's body next to his, he felt himself melting into the couch, completely relaxed. Seungkwan smiled a little at the compliment, gently pushing Mingyu's head forward so he could reach the back with the dryer.
"Was the subway busy?" he asked suddenly.
"Surprisingly, yes. It seems a lot of people had the same idea as me." Mingyu chuckled to himself. Seungkwan's fingers dragged across the back of his scalp and he almost moaned at how good it felt.
"The rain made everybody crazy..." The younger boy muttered.
After another minute the sound of the dryer halted. Seungkwan placed it on the couch next to them, but then still continued to rake his hands through Mingyu's hair. He liked the way it felt, and judging from Mingyu's reaction, he enjoyed it too. The taller boy allowed himself to let out a soft groan, closing his eyes and letting his head fall back against the couch.
"That feels...so good..." He felt his boyfriend's breath on his face, the heat and affection radiating off him in waves. Then, suddenly, he heard a sniff and opened his eyes. Seungkwan was crying.
"Seungkwan?" The younger boy turned away, trying to hide his face. Mingyu took hold of his head gently and pulled it back, seeing in full the tear rolling down his cheek. "Baby what's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," Seungkwan replied. Despite the tears on his cheeks, he was smiling. "I just can't believe you came." A sob exploded from his chest. He laughed, surprised at himself, but then sobbed again.
"Kwannie..." Mingyu shuffled his body to a more upright position, taking Seungkwan's face in both his hands and cradling it gently. "Of course I came. Nothing can keep me away from you."
"But it was dangerous," the other boy replied, "you could have gotten stuck, or hurt, or even worse..."
"I think you're overestimating the danger of this storm." Mingyu replied with a smile. Seungkwan laughed in between sobs, his body lurching like he had hiccups.
The two stared at each other for a few seconds, Mingyu gently stroking his boyfriend's cheek with his thumb. The taller boy was filled with an overwhelming feeling of love, like he literally would fight through a hurricane for the person in front of him.
"I fell for you like the rain," he said. His tone was serious, but loving. "It started off slow, like a drizzle. Then it got heavier and heavier, pouring into every nook and cranny of me. And now I'm soaked." Mingyu looked at Seungkwan with adoring eyes, seeing the other boy look back with a happy face...that turned into a laugh.
"You are the lamest person I've ever met." Seungkwan pushed Mingyu's face away gently. The taller boy pouted, which made him laugh even more.
"Hey, I'm pouring my heart out here!" He protested.
"I know." The younger boy suddenly pulled him back towards him, tightly, by the back of the neck. Mingyu gasped in surprise, before their lips connected and Seungkwan cut him off with a passionate kiss. For a few minutes, they were completely lost in each other.
"I love you too," Seungkwan replied once they broke away for air. Outside the storm still brewed, but it seemed far away now. Here, in his apartment, was their own little oasis of perfect weather.
"Like the rain."
