Oh how the tides have turned

Summary:

A one-shot collection of me turning sad quotes from tpw into modern au's that are much less sad.

Notes:

Hello folks, just a quick shoutout to the poppy war discord server for encouraging me to do this. Also, the sad quote for today's chapter is: "I thought I could catch him." From The Dragon Republic.

I just think tpw characters as teenagers would be a fun challenge.

Also, all of the one-shots will be in the same universe, I just...have to write them first.

Chapter 1: Holding on to you

Chapter Text

“Rin,” Chaghan started, voice cracking, barely concealing his anger, “I don’t need any of your bullshit right now. My boyfriend is in the hospital and I need to go make sure he’s okay.” Without a second doubt, he shoved her out of the way and yanked his car keys from her hands.

The situation they had gotten themselves into was really all her fault. Yes, it had been Altan’s idea, but she was the one who ended up following him to the top and telling him to slide.

See, Altan had this splendid idea to go to that one house everyone said was haunted. He was never one to believe the rumors, yet he decided they should go. “Bring some fun into their lives,” as was his excuse. And…yes, school was boring, especially for the one and only resident genius. But why did that mean they had to sneak into a building that screamed ‘danger hazard’ with Altan’s most infuriating protégé?

It started off normal enough–just a gang of teenagers breaking and entering–and then they found the stairs to the attic. Naturally, Chaghan’s dumbass, impulsive boyfriend–in an attempt to show Rin just how great he was–thought, ‘Hey, why don’t I take this wooden board I found lying around and slide down the stairs?’ To which Rin herself encouraged him.

Altan went flying after hitting a stray piece of wood. Chaghan did his best to catch him, but…

Immediately upon his crash landing, Chaghan sighed and called an ambulance. Arms were not meant to bend in that manner, no matter how much Altan claimed otherwise. Plus… there was blood.

The ambulance showed up not much later and hauled away the idiot who likely had a concussion too. Even better, he couldn’t go with him because someone had to drive Rin out of there.

Which led to this. Rin yelled at him because now they were going to be arrested, and attempted to take his keys to keep him there until they could figure out what to tell the cops in case they did. What joy that brought him…he took back his keys and threatened to leave her if she didn’t come.

Tiger’s tits, why did she have to be such a pain in the ass? Chaghan had no idea what Altan saw in the little sophomore who knew nothing except how to be loud, annoying, and-

Dammit Rin, can you shut up for one second so I can get us to the hospital?”

She shut her mouth and gave him a dirty glare. He ignored it and soaked in the silence.
It did not take long for her to start insulting him on how he was just “standing there running around” instead of trying to help him.

“I thought I could catch him,” he forced out. After that, he tuned out anything else she had to say and focused on the road in front of him.

By the time they got to the hospital she had her headphones in and was looking the part of a moody 16-year-old. Honestly, he was surprised she didn’t yell at him the whole trip.
He parked the car and pulled one of her headphones out. She almost punched him in the face. Nevertheless, they grabbed their things and went inside.

There was a kind-looking man at the reception, a seemingly permanent smile plastered across his face. Chaghan wasted no time going up to him and telling him they were there to see someone.

“Name of the patient?” the man asked.

“Altan Trengsin,” Chaghan responded.

“Alright, I need your names and relation to the patient.”

Why so many questions?

“Chaghan Suren, boyfriend, and Runin Fang…friend.”

The man nodded and gestured for them to take a seat. “Someone will come to get you shortly, please wait.”

So they sat, and boy was it the most awkward not-so-interaction he’s ever had. It was a huge relief when they finally got called and led to Altan’s room.

They were met with a scowl and a cast on Altan’s right arm.

“You broke your arm,” Rin said.

“No shit,” Chaghan shot back. He pulled over a chair and sat right next to Altan’s bed, ignoring Rin’s angry response.

“How do you feel, idiot?”

Anyone else would have gotten a good smack in the face, but because he was Chaghan and Altan was only a bitch to everyone but him, he got off with an exasperated sigh.

“I feel fine, thanks,” was his boyfriend’s cold response.

“Oh really? The broken arm must hurt. And the multiple injuries across your other arm and legs. Not to mention the-” he double-checked the information on the edge of the bed before proceeding, “concussion.”

“I said I feel fine, Suren.” Altan rolled his eyes.

“And I said that was bullshit.”

They held a sort of stubborn eye contact for a moment before Altan decided to acknowledge Rin’s presence with a hello.

“You hurt bad?” she asked him.

“As I told this guy, I’m fine.”

Unlike Chaghan’s more…comfortable response, she gave a pleased smile and the two looked at each other with equally cocky looks. She should not be encouraging him.

“When are you getting out of here?” Chaghan asked.

“Today I guess, whenever Jiang shows up.” His expression soured. “He’s probably too high to even remember to come get me.”

Chaghan couldn’t argue with him. His guardian was known for being…well, simply put… the reason parents didn’t like their kids walking down their neighborhood. You could smell the smoke from outside. Smoking, though thank the gods, not the same stuff, was a habit Altan himself had taken up. But hey, that’s not today’s issue.

“Bitch,” Rin muttered.

In all her teen angstiness, she had grown to resent the man who was once her favorite freshman teacher. How he was even allowed to teach remained a mystery though.

“Yeah,” Altan agreed.

The mood was going noticeably awkward, so as always, it was up to Chaghan to break the tension. “Do you need anything? Rin and I can go pick up anything you want from the store.”

“Look who’s gone all soft,” the injured man teased.

“I’m taking it back and leaving you here bored and alone unless you speak up in the next ten seconds.”

Rin stared at him, looking scared for his life. If it was anyone else, she should be.

But Altan only scowled at him and spoke more harshly than usual. “Thin ice, Suren,” he warned.

Chaghan shrugged. “Well? You want anything.”

Altan stared silently a second longer before caving. “Get me some food.”

“Got it, we’ll be leaving now. See you.”

As he grabbed Rin by the arm and started to pull her out of the room, Altan called out for him.

“Hey Suren, come here for a second.”

Rin tugged her arm out of his grasp and leaned against the wall, rudely tilting her head to tell him to go in. He flipped her off as he went right back in.

“What is it?” he asked Altan.

“Just wanted to say thanks, but I would have been fine without the ambulance.”

“Better safe than sorry.” He knew it was the best apology Altan would offer him.

Before he could doubt himself, he pressed a quick kiss to his boyfriend’s lips.

“Don’t get yourself killed while I’m out,” he murmured.

Altan pulled away from him and huffed, though it came out more fond than upset. “Have some faith in me.”

With that, Chaghan kissed him one more time before leaving and dragging Rin out with him.
