Work Text:
Once everything settled down in Hawkins and Eddie had mostly healed from his surgery for his wounds from the bats, Steve got him into a wheelchair and took him to Max’s room.
Lucas is clearly exhausted but he doesn’t wanna stop reading to Max, not even for a second, just in case it is getting through. He never wants Max to think she’s alone.
So Eddie, being Eddie, tells Lucas that he should take some time for himself. Maybe go get something to eat, walk around for a bit, get some fresh air. Lucas declines, but then Eddie volunteers to read to Max for a while, to at least let Lucas just sit and get some rest.
That, Lucas will agree to. And it turns out to be the most entertaining thing he’s seen in a while. Eddie gets all into it, doing different voices for the characters, and at one point attempts to jump up from the wheelchair for dramatic effect — causing Steve to have a very brief heart attack — before wincing from the pain and slowly sitting back down. He continues reading as dramatically as possible, just with not as much movement.
They all decide this will be their routine, for every day after, until Max wakes up.
