Snapshots of Parenthood

Summary:

Glimpses of Sirius and Remus navigating their new life as parents after the sudden arrival on their daughter Addie.

Notes:

So I've been posting all these little drabbles from the same universe as my Unexpected fic on tumblr but then I thought maybe I should share them here too for those who don't have tumblr to read.

This AU has been eating my brain lately. I've fallen in love with little Addie and I hope you do too. 💜

Chapter 1: Accident

Chapter Text

Remus rubbed his eyes as he wandered into the kitchen and found Sirius bouncing around with Addie resting on his chest as he cooed to her softly. He poured himself a cup of coffee and then turned to lean against the counter so he could watch them.

“And how are we today my happy little accident?” Sirius said as he booped their daughter on their nose.

Remus rolled his eyes. “You’re going to give her a complex.”

“I’m just speaking the truth.”

“Well, I prefer surprise to accident. No more Bob Ross for you.”

“Hey, not my fault his voice puts her right to sleep.”

Remus set down his coffee mug and made his way over to Sirius. “Was she up early?”

“We were up with the sunrise today, weren’t we Addie?”

She blew bubbles in response and Sirius lifted the blanket he had under her to wipe her mouth.

“I’m sorry I didn’t hear her.”

“Nope,” Sirius said. “No sorrys. You’re recovering from surgery still and you need your rest. We’re doing this together.”

Remus sighed, knowing it was too early to have this fight with Sirius again and reached out his arms to take Addie from Sirius.

“Uh uh uh,” Sirius said, stepping away from his grasp. “Daddy isn’t supposed to be carrying heavy things, isn’t he Addie?”

Remus frowned at him. “Sirius, she’s like ten pounds.”

“And if I give her to you, you aren’t going to put her down when you need to. You already ripped your stitches once, Remus, I’m not having it happen again.”

Remus groaned in defeat as he made his way over to the couch to sit down. “I birthed the kid and now no one will let me hold her.”

“Just trying to keep you safe, love,” Sirius said as he leaned down to give Remus a kiss before passing Addie over to him. Once she was settled, Sirius sat down next to them wrapping his arm around Remus’s back as he rested his head on his shoulder.

“Do you think she’ll be alright?” Remus asked as Addie wrapped her hands around his finger, focusing on her bright green eyes so he didn’t have to see Sirius’s reaction.

“What do you mean?”

“I just mean I didn’t know I was pregnant. We didn’t do the pre-natal vitamins and all the checkups and I probably ate some things I shouldn’t have. I just worry I didn’t take care of her the way I should have. The way I would have if I’d known.”

“Look at me love,” Sirius said, and Remus turned his head so he could see his husband better. “It’s not your fault you didn’t know. The doctors did all the tests and screening with Addie when she was born. She’s strong. She got that from you. You didn’t do anything wrong. You didn’t hurt her by not knowing, okay?”

Remus nodded and he felt himself crying again. He was pretty sure he’d cried more in the past couple weeks than he had during the rest of his life combined. “Stupid hormones,” he complained as he reached one hand up to wipe the tears from his face.

Sirius mumbled something and Remus glanced at him again. “Tired love?”

“Yes,” Sirius said, “but it doesn’t matter. It’s all worth it.”

Sirius reached out one hand to tickle Addie gently. In response, Remus leaned over and kissed his forehead. “My little family.”

“You, me, and the surprise makes three.”

“I don’t know,” Remus said. “Happy little accident is growing on me.”
