Work Text:
Dear P.,
Everything is going about as well as they can be around here. Of course, that isn’t saying much, but I needn’t get into the details—you already know, after all.
Alphys has been working on my dream body. I think she’ll be finished quite soon. I can’t wait, but… I’m also dreading it. I just know the producers won’t like it. Or they might decide it’ll make me more of a laughingstock and ruin it for me. I really don’t want to dislike my new body, it’s everything I’ve dreamed of, after all. But knowing you support me will make it better, I think. Actually, I wanted you to come to Alphys’s lab when she’s finished, so you can be the first to see the new me. I really hope you like it, if you decide to come. It would mean the world to me.
Really, I wish we would stop writing these secret letters and be open already. I know it’s dangerous, but you’re strong, and people need to keep me around, if only to have something to make fun of. I hate that love is seen as weakness in this world—I’ve felt invincible ever since you confessed to me. I can only imagine what my love does for you.
Anyway, please write back if you’re able to come, and when. Hopefully Alphys can schedule things so she’s done right when you’re ready.
I can’t wait for your response. I love you.

Papyrus read over the letter three more times, heart beating out of his chest. Mettaton’s dream body was almost finished… and he wanted Papyrus to be the first to see it.
He immediately went to his desk and pulled out a pen and paper. There was no doubt how we was going to answer—no matter how dangerous it could be, he’d be there for Mettaton. Frankly, he was also sick of hiding. It was a pain, having to have Sans and Alphys passing letters between them like notes in a classroom. In addition, Papyrus had to limit the number of Mettaton’s shows he attended, lest anyone catch on that he actually liked the robot, and Mettaton had not once been able to visit Snowdin.
But, with luck, things were going to change very soon. Papyrus even had secret hopes that going public about his relationship with Mettaton might prove to the rest of the Underground that love was worth it.
DEAR M.,
NOTHING WOULD MAKE ME HAPPIER. I AM VERY HONORED THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO SHOW ME YOUR DREAM BODY FIRST. I’M SURE I’LL LOVE IT. MY ROYAL GUARD SHIFTS END AT 5 O’CLOCK PM ON THE DOT EVERY DAY, SO I CAN COME ANY DAY AFTER THAT TIME.
I’M ALSO REALLY TIRED OF KEEPING THINGS SECRET. I CAN’T SPEAK FOR ALPHYS, BUT I KNOW IT’S PUTTING STRESS ON SANS, AND IT PAINS ME TO HAVE TO PRETEND I DISLIKE YOU. I THINK THAT WHEN YOU SHOW YOUR NEW BODY TO THE PRODUCERS, I SHOULD BE THERE. I WILL DEFEND YOU FROM THEM, AND I’LL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO CONFESS MY TRUE FEELINGS PUBLICLY, AND MAYBE SET AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHER MONSTERS. YOU’RE RIGHT—I THINK LOVE IS STRENGTH. KNOWING THAT YOU LOVE ME MAKES ME FEEL INVINCIBLE, TOO.
PERHAPS WE CAN DISCUSS OUR SPECIFIC PLANS WHEN I NEXT SEE YOU. I HOPE THAT WILL BE SOON.
LET ME KNOW THE EXACT SECOND ALPHYS IS FINISHED. I LOVE YOU.

Papyrus sealed the letter in an envelope, hoping it would be the last one he would ever have to send.
