It was late on a summer night, and Alphys and Undyne were in bed. Undyne was sound asleep, her snores sounding like a jackhammer going off right next to Alphys’s ear. But Alphys was largely used to that by this point. In some ways, she actually liked it better than complete silence.
Alphys was just starting to doze off when she heard deep rumbles in the distance. Probably just a truck driving by, she thought sleepily.
But the rumbles only got louder and more frequent, until a bright flash lit up the room and an ear-splitting crack woke both the girls up.
“The heck was that?” Undyne turned on the bedside lamp. “Did the roof crack or something?”
“I d-don’t know…” Alphys got out of bed and peered through the curtains. Drops of water were pouring from the heavens, quite unlike anything she had ever seen before. As she watched, a fork of light split the sky in the distance, and there was another deafening crack. “W-Wait, I think I’ve seen this before! In an anime. I-I think it’s called a ‘thunderstorm.’”
“I sorta know what storms are, but what’s the thunder part?”
There was a rumble in the distance.
“I-I think it’s that. The noise, I mean.”
Undyne came over to Alphys’s side and peeked outside as well. “Damn, it’s worse than Waterfall out there,” she said. As she spoke, there was another flash of light. “Whoa! What was that?”
“The l-lightning. I think that’s what m-makes the noise.”
“That is so cool!” In the dim light, Alphys could see how bright Undyne’s eye looked. “Is there gonna be more?”
“Probably, for a while.”
“How often do they happen?”
“I-I dunno. I think it’s a summer thing?”
“Nice.” Undyne looked down at Alphys. “Is this another science thing you’re gonna wanna study?”
“Maybe!” Alphys watched as more lightning lit up the clouds. “It is really fascinating.”
“The surface is even better than I thought it would be,” Undyne said. She reached out and stroked Alphys’s head scales. “I’m really glad I got to come up here with you.”
Alphys went red. “Th-thanks, I’m g-glad I got to come up h-here with you, too!”
Undyne kissed her forehead. “Hey, let’s open the curtains and watch from the bed! I could fall asleep to this.”
“Great idea!”
So the girls opened the curtains and then snuggled together in bed as the storm raged outside, the first of many wonders they would experience in their freedom on the surface.
