   Summary

The urgency belying his voice rattles her. Why? A fear of rats? Burglars? Loan sharks? Smells? Every day she tries to work up the courage to ask, but then Benny throws her a copy of Chess Review from before she was born and she reads it like her life depends on it.

   --

Benny cares that Beth locks the door behind her when she leaves. She doesn't understand why.
