Chapter Text
Dwight had been starting to regret accepting Steve's advances. Not because of Steve himself; per sé, but Dwight had his worries.
That trial… It was nice to be flirted with, it'd been so long since anyone had made a pass at him, or really made him feel desired at all. but for it to actually go anywhere, and so quickly, set off warning bells in his head. Maybe he was being too easy, too trusting. It wouldn't be the first time someone's tried to get with him with no concern for his actual feelings or well being.
Steve's a great guy, as far as Dwight knows, but maybe he took what Steve had said too seriously.
After all, there were plenty better people in the realm than him. Especially when you factor in that Dwight was stuck in this stupid Elf costume all the time. He looked ridiculous, how could someone ever be attracted to him or even take him seriously like this?
There must have been an ulterior motive to Steve's actions, it made no sense otherwise. Steve could have even chosen to flirt with the other two Dwights in his company, but he chose the Elf.
Then again, doesn't Steve flirt with everyone? It's been a while since Dwight was last able to go to a campfire full of survivors that weren't his duplicate. But he does remember the Steves always being very charismatic, with quite the ego to boot.
What was the significance of trying to get with a nerd stuck in a shitty costume? He wasn't even a leader anymore considering his circumstances. Dwight couldn't be a status symbol… Unless he was going to be the brunt of another joke. Maybe someone at a different fire made a bet with Steve. Maybe Steve just wants to sate some sort of curiosity and figured the Elf would be desperate. Which.. he wasn't necessarily wrong… Stupid!
How could you let this happen Dwight?! Of course he's not interested in you!
And what if he is? Is that not just as scary?
You have nothing to give, you're a washed up old survivor with nothing left. You're pretty low, even for a Dwight, why are you worthy of someone's love?
"Hey how's it going over here?" Steve interrupted Dwight's thoughts "Saw you weren't by the fire with the others, can I join?" Steve made a gesture to sit with Dwight.
Gosh he really is very handsome, the goggles were a quirky touch but he didn't mind them at all. It gave his Steve- his Steve? No that's not right, this isn't right, it can't be right.
"No Steve, I think I'd rather be alone right now" I'd rather you hold me right now "Please don't bother me" He responded in a harsh tone, his usual glare never leaving his features.
Steve looked disappointed but turned and left.
Dwight felt a stab in his chest watching him go.
Why did he have to be this way? He shouldn't need to have Steve's companionship but the idea of a relationship… he longed for it. He wasn't being smart. He's sure this isn't okay, he's getting too fixed on Steve, but he can't bring himself to break it off.
Dwight wishes Steve had stayed but also hopes he won't come back.
