Work Text:
It liked to come here sometimes.
It was a nice way to get away from things. Go to a world where everything is simpler.
The others wouldn’t understand. They thought it was too simple. That nothing could live without the 4th dimension to support it.
They were wrong. It was still fascinating all the same. Not the fact that the creatures could exist such a simple place, though that was part of it. The creatures themselves were interesting as well.
The spotted red ones with wide mouths, the green ones with teal eyes and large mouths to spit rocks through, and so many others. They were all fascinating in their own little ways. The littles plant ones were especially interesting. They were both plant and animal, and came out of pods with legs and flowers on top. He could never make sense of them, though he came close.
It passed through the world, studying all forms of life. It was good.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One day, it found another one of its own in this world. The one it was talking to was younger than itself. They clearly hadn't been here for as long as it had.
They looked scared. It asked them why.
They said that a red person from the sky had commanded an army of the blue plant things to attack it. It had done the same to their friend, a rocky one from this world that was as intelligent as it.
It was smarter than the younger one. It could figure out that someone from another world in this plane came to this world. It could have made peace and talked with the two, yet instead it attacked!
It was outraged. It swore that if it saw the invaders anymore, it would attack them. It would not let them deface this world anymore.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It didn’t know what to think.
It had found the invaders while it was exploring a deep underwater cave. It saw them at work, driving away all the beasts of the cave.
It was furious, and attacked.
All was going while, and it nearly seemed that it had driven the invaders away from at least the cave, and hopefully the entire planet. Then they brought out the purple plant creatures.
It knew the young one it talked to said that they could hurt him, yet that was different to actually feeling the pain itself. Finally it couldn’t take it anymore. It ran away even though it wished it could have fought more. It left the invaders a treasure it had picked up on its exploration. It was a large red cylinder with a hole in it that seemed to amplify noise from one end. It hoped that the invaders would take it and then leave.
Eventually, they did.
It was relieved.
Hopefully, they would never come back again.
But they did.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It eventually found an older member of its kind. This one had devoted their whole life to studying the place the invaders came from and their kind. They were obsessed with them. It even insisted on being called a “she”. It didn’t know what that meant, but it respected it. After itself, it didn’t think it had any right to judge. She wanted to capture one of the invaders alive so that she could study it. Naturally, It redirected her toward the invaders that were on this planet.
It was happy. The invaders would finally be gone.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The invader escaped. More invaders came. Different invaders. They freed the invader that she had managed to trap.
She came to it apologize. It was fine. It understood the situation.
But that didn’t mean it wasn’t mad.
The next time the invaders came back, it would send them away from this world forever.
That it swore.
