Summary
La'an's demons formed in that dark and smokey Gorn breeding center when she was just a child. She pushed them down deep enough that she thought she had dealt with them for good. She became a Starfleet officer. She endeavored to protect people in the way that she never had been. She moved on but never forgot.
After the mind meld with Spock on the shuttlecraft, she begins to dream of the Vulcan science officer every night. Sometimes he rescues her from the Gorn. And sometimes he looms godlike in the black of space waiting to snatch her up. La'an begins to realize that something went really wrong with the meld. But turning to Spock for help may be even more difficult than dealing with her past on her own.
