Work Text:

Morgan almost regretted asking Alex to watch the movie with them.

Almost, Morgan thought, glancing at their hand and seeing Alex gripping it. They couldn’t feel their hand anymore, but they didn’t need to. They knew Alex was holding it.

So maybe Morgan planned this whole thing out just so they could hold Alex’s hand. They wanted to test their theory. Did they really love Alex, or was it just the emotion of seeing their best friend hurt that made those emotions rear their ugly head?

Morgan felt a pinching in what was left of their hand, and summoned the strength to squeeze, to remind Alex they were there.

Alex was shaking, clinging to Morgan’s hand for dear life, when it seemed to register that they were safe and they stopped clutching Gibbles to their chest. It was cute, seeing Alex with their guard down like that—

“I can’t believe you talked me into this,” Alex muttered, looking over at Morgan with faux-hate in their eyes. They looked like a pouting child. Morgan wanted to kiss them.

Morgan pushed away the thought. “I can’t believe I still have my hand.”

Alex blinked. “Huh. Oh yeah. I’ve been pretty brave about this, you should be proud of me.”

In another life, Morgan would smile and tell them they were proud of Alex, and then they would kiss him. But that was not the life Morgan lead.

Morgan forced a smile, knowing in the pit of their stomach that they loved Alex. “I’ll be proud of you when the movie’s over.”
