Work Text:
Namjoon was humming to himself, flying from flower to flower with a group of bees, giggling at the pollen that stuck to his skin and enjoying the soft breeze when he hears him. A low chuckle has Namjoon stopping in his tracks and letting himself fall to delicately hide behind some petals.
"Hi cutie," it's a human who speaks, a young man with black hair and a sweet smile. Namjoon peeks a little further to see the man speaking gently to a ladybug. He stares with fascination at the cute scene. The human takes a camera out of his bag and snaps a picture of the perfectly placed bug among the morning dew on a leaf.
Namjoon is immediately in love.
He's seen humans before, because he has accidentally wandered into parks and gardens far too many times when he's distracted. They're interesting. He likes to study them, likes to hear them talk, walk, and sometimes even dance. They make the strangest magical devices and Namjoon has researched them as much as he could without getting too close to them.
The other fairies think he is weird. Humans are gross, scary, and weird. And Namjoon shouldn't be so interested in them because that makes him all of those things too.
He can agree they're scary. They're so big and slap away bugs with hardly any remorse. But they're also just so fascinating!
This human is different though! This human is short, and his fingers are gentle with the bees and the butterflies that buzz around him, and his smile is so cute! Surely one can't be so cute and also be gross, scary, and weird.
Namjoon is quick as he zooms through the flowers and the grass towards the human. His footsteps are light and soundless so he can easily get closer and closer without being noticed.
The human's bag is open at his side and Namjoon is curious to know what he keeps inside so he flies right in.
Oh! How lucky of him, among pens and wrappers and a single odd sock, Namjoon finds a bag of tiny cookies. They have chocolate chips and the smell is delicious. He supposes humans could put two or three in their mouth at a time but even one is so big the little fairy has to use both of his hands to grab it.
Namjoon is so distracted, halfway into the bag, happily kicking his legs and stuffing his mouth with chocolate, that he doesn't even notice the trip to the human's home.
He doesn't realize they've moved until the human goes to take something out of his bag and is surprised by the unexpected gentle fluttering of wings. A moment later Namjoon is falling. He is still inside the gad of cookies, face and hands covered in chocolate when he lands on the hard surface of a table.
He crawls out to peek around, a little disoriented and dizzy from the fall. And when he looks up, up, almost at the tiny sun that illuminates the room he finds the human already looking at him. Namjoon takes a step back in surprise, and then he smiles and waves.
"Hello!" he says then gasps. "Oh, silly me. You're so rude, Joonie," he chastises himself before bowing with his arms pressed to his sides.
"I must be dreaming," the human murmurs before he kneels to sit next to the table to look more closely at the little fairy.
But Namjoon politely lets him know it isn't a dream before introducing himself. "I'm Namjoon, a flower fairy!"
"Um, pleased to meet you. I'm Yoongi… What do you mean you're a flower fairy?"
"I make sure flowers are-! In the name of the sun, what have you done to them?" The little fairy asks in a panic when he notices the wilting plants on a shelf. He bats his wings, quickly getting to the pots and wrapping his arms around the stem of one. "Poor baby, it's okay. Joonie is here," he consoles the plant sweetly.
"Well in that case, I'm a photography human," Yoongi says as he gets up from the floor and goes to stand in front of the shelf. "Sorry, I'm not very good with plants," he explains when Namjoon turns to glare at him.
"That's alright," the fairy smiles, digging around the dirt with his tiny hands. "I am!"
"Ah, you're staying then?" Yoongi asks, carefully picking Namjoon up by the wings. The fairy gives a strong nod, fairy dust sprinkling off of him with the action. "I'll prepare you a bed then."
So Namjoon stays, with the excuse of caring for Yoongi's dying plants. The human is a bit apprehensive in the beginning, feeling like he might be going insane as he prepares a bed inside a shoebox for Namjoon, but he warms up quickly.
Yoongi's mother had been a strong believer in the existence of fairies and other things of the sort. She would swear fairies used to visit her in the garden as a child. Yoongi had never met one but he grew up reading out loud in the garden, adorning bird houses with tiny trinkets and leaving out cut-up fruit and seeds for the birds and the fairies. With Namjoon flying in front of his nose, with his hands on his hips and a pout of his lips as he scolds the human for over watering one of the pots, it's only natural he easily accepts his mother had been right all along.
Within a week Yoongi's plants are thriving, looking far better than they did even when he got them. Within a month he has doubled the amount of green in his house. He'd purposely started hunting for plants in deplorable states, so Namjoon would busy himself by nurturing them to full health again.
Namjoon likes when Yoongi reads to him, and he likes it too when the human tries to teach him how to read.
Namjoon likes cherries, though they're as big as his head and Yoongi jokes he might confuse him for one if he sits inside the bowl. Namjoon likes sharing a tangerine on warm evenings, holding a wedge between his hands and drinking the juicy pulp. Yoongi knows how to pick the sweetest ones, every time he peels one open Namjoon's mouth waters. After eating, Namjoon will always end up sticky, but it's all good because Yoongi will fill the bathroom sink with warm water and they'll share a bath among soft music and soapy bubbles.
Namjoon likes sitting on top of the piano lid and listening to Yoongi play, he also likes stepping on the keys and making up his own tunes.
Namjoon likes playing with Holly. The happy dog lets him sit on his back while he runs through the whole house.
Namjoon likes laying down on the bed with Yoongi when the human has had a bad day. He likes drying the silent tears that roll down Yoongi's cheeks even though the salty liquid tickles his skin and dampens him so much that he ends up shivering.
Namjoon likes when Yoongi shows him the songs he's making in his free time, he likes sitting between his large headphones and letting the music surround him completely. He also likes sitting on the hand that Yoongi moves the mouse with while he works on editing his photographs, and giggles sweetly when the movements get faster in spurs of inspiration.
Namjoon likes napping in Yoongi's open space drawers, especially among his soft socks. He also likes when Yoongi wears big hoodies with large pockets that he can hide inside of. Because then he can go with Yoongi while he does his chores, or when he goes to take pictures. Namjoon likes exploring, and he likes doing it with Yoongi most.
Above all, Namjoon likes Yoongi. He likes the way he smiles, the way he laughs, the way he moves. He likes hearing him talk, he likes knowing what he thinks. He likes him even when he curses and when he frowns. Namjoon loves Yoongi and he tells him every night, with a soft tiny kiss on the human's forehead before flying to his tiny bed at Yoongi's bedside and falling asleep.
Lately, Yoongi has been frustrated about deadlines and schedules and last-minute corrections. He's been grumpy and quiet and Namjoon is starting to worry he might not be eating enough. So he flies to Yoongi, who is sitting at his desk with his headphones on and a frown on his face. It's well past their bedtime and Yoongi hasn't come out to eat yet. Namjoon's tummy rumbles loudly because as much as he could find something for himself he likes Yoongi's cooking, and he likes eating with him.
"Yoonie," he tries first, knocking on one of the headphones and patiently waiting for a response that doesn't come. He tries again, and then a third time until he huffs and resorts to pulling on Yoongi's hair but even that doesn't work.
He pouts, standing on Yoongi's shoulder and stomping his little foot in frustration. Yoongi's hands are flying across the keyboard as he types and Namjoon has an idea then. Yoongi's eyes are glued to the screen so he doesn't notice as the fairy delicately flutters to sit on the keys. Yoongi doesn't notice until he is tapping with enough force on Namjoon's stomach and right leg to make him yelp.
Yoongi looks down startled and takes his headphones off with a groan.
"Namjoon? What do you want? Can't you see I'm busy?" The fairy is tearing up when Yoongi lifts him by the wings to hold him at eye level.
"I'm hungry-"
"I'm working. Go away."
Yoongi drops the little fairy over the corner of his desk. Namjoon hardly has enough time to flutter his wings to stop his fall before landing with a tiny thud on the table. "Get out," Yoongi puts his headphones back on and points to the door without another word.
Namjoon cries, huge sparkly tears as he stays sprawled on the desk for a moment before dashing out the door.
Namjoon goes to hide under the leaves of an orchid and lets his tears fall. He cries and cries until the flower has lost all its petals and he can't stop hiccuping. He doesn't want to leave. He likes Yoongi too much! But he will if he must. If Yoongi will be happier without him here then he'll go in the morning.
Yoongi comes out of his office by the time Namjoon has calmed down.
"Namjoon? Did you eat already? Where are you?" he calls out but he still sounds annoyed so Namjoon only hides deeper between the pots and the leaves, and curls up with a pout.
Yoongi eats alone and an exhausted Namjoon falls asleep where he is hiding, perfectly secluded from sight. The little fairy doesn't see the growing guilt in Yoongi's voice as he frantically starts searching for him in his drawers and between the books on his shelf. He doesn't see the panic and doesn't hear the apologies.
By the time Namjoon wakes up the house is dark and silent. He stretches and yawns, uses his fists to clean the leftover tears on his cheeks and crawls out from between the pots.
Namjoon goes to the kitchen, because his tummy is still rumbling, and is surprised to find a bit of buttered toast left plated on the counter. He eats and the tears return to his eyes because he is going to miss Yoongi's food so much!
He is going to miss Yoongi so so much.
With that thought in mind, he heads to the bedroom, slips through the small crack and sniffles when his eyes land on Yoongi's sleeping form.
One more night. Namjoon isn't quite ready for goodbye. He'll sleep with Yoongi tonight and leave in the morning. The fairy quietly settles on the pillow, where he sleeps whenever Yoongi has a hard time and wants some consolation. Except for this time, it's Namjoon whose heart feels like it's being squished harshly.
He looks at Yoongi's sleeping face for a while, wanting to touch his cheeks, his lips, his eyelashes, but not wanting to disturb him. He looks at him, memorizing every detail until he falls asleep, his tiny tears barely dampening the pillow.
Namjoon wakes up in the morning to the sun on his face and the birds chirping outside the window. He blinks his eyes open tiredly, yesterday's emotions were too intense for his little heart. He looks around with the intention of getting one last look at the room but everything seems different. So much… so much smaller than before.
He rolls over to find himself face to face with Yoongi, but the sleeping man also seems smaller than usual. He reaches out with one hand to Yoongi's cheek, wanting to touch his skin. But when he reaches him he realises his palm is big enough to completely cover the side of Yoongi's face.
Namjoon screams and even his voice sounds different, too loud, too deep. He scrambles back and ends up falling off the bed, bringing all of the blankets with him and startling Yoongi awake.
"Namjoon?" the other man asks, sitting up so fast he gets dizzy.
"Over here! Everything feels weird," the fairy calls out from the floor and Yoongi stays silent for a moment.
"You-, are you-?" Yoongi moves to look over the edge of the bed and gasps at the sight. "You're normal!"
"I've always been normal!" the fairy argues with an offended huff. Yoongi shakes his head.
"I mean you're human sized!"
"Oh?" Namjoon stares at his hands then lifts his feet into the air and stares at those too. "Oh! no wonder you look so small!" he giggles and it's Yoongi's turn to huff.
"I'm not small. But, how?"
"I don't know," Namjoon responds honestly, wiggling his toes. "Did you wish for this to happen? Stars are nosy, sometimes they grant you wishes even if you don't say them out loud."
"Well, I didn't- not this in particular," Yoongi explains, a blush creeping up his neck. Namjoon tilts his head in confusion. "Look, about yesterday…" he starts but trails off and Namjoon feels his eyes fill with tears again and his heart sadden.
"R-right, ah, I'll leave. I couldn't leave last night, I didn't want to be alone again yet."
"No!" Yoongi shakes his head, getting off the bed to pin Namjoon to the floor and keep him there. "No, no, I don't want you to leave! I'm sorry, I shouldn't have talked to you like that, I was so mean to you. I'm really sorry, I'd like you to stay with me."
There's silence for a moment, Yoongi is too scared to open his eyes.
"I forgive you," Namjoon whispers, and presses a kiss to Yoongi's reddening cheek.
"I'm also, um, sorry about my wish… I didn't mean to turn you human," Yoongi apologizes again and Namjoon laughs.
"It's okay, I don't think I'm completely human anyways. I can feel the magic under my skin," he explains after pressing more kisses to Yoongi's face. "What was your wish?"
"Ah, well, to see you again… so that I could show you how much you mean to me. How much I love you," Yoongi says. It's Namjoon who blushes this time.
"Oh," he whispers, his heart beating out of his chest. "And how much is that?"
"So fucking much. Namjoon, I love you," Yoongi declares again, one hand cradling the side of Namjoon's face before he leans in to press their lips together in a sweet kiss. "I was dying to do that," he whispers when they part.
"Do it again," Namjoon smiles and Yoongi kisses him again. He kisses him all morning and all night. And he kisses him again the next day and every single day after that.
