Chapter Text
“Robin just spit it out, come on!” Steve sighs and closes his eyes. His elbows were on the counter, while Robin who was attempting to stall telling him something by rambling, was putting away returns.
Robin stops putting away returns to glare at him. She glances around the store for any customers; there was no one but her and Steve, nothing could save her now. She starts her sentence with a movie still in her hand, “Promise not to get mad?” She finally replies with a fearful look on her face.
Steve feels a headache coming on, “Fine, whatever, yes.”
“I-“ Robin pauses, frustrated with herself. You’ve rambled enough Buckley, out with it. “I like Nancy.”
“Well obviously.” He bluntly stated.
“Wait- what- so- you’re not like, pissed?”
“God no, why would I be? We dated in high school big whoop.”
“Well, that’s a nice surprise..”
“You gonna ask her out or?”
“Hah. No, she’s still dating Jonathan. Plus she doesn’t even like-“ Robin makes quotation marks with her fingers “boobies.”
“We don’t know that for sure.” He points out to her.
“No need for the false hope.”
“Just saying.”
“Well then don’t.”
The store bell rings in their ears. Steve grins.
“What?” Robin turns around to see Nancy who was looking around the store, oblivious to the previous conversation.
There’s a loud crash and then Nancy is looking at her. Shit, she forgot she still had that movie in her hand. Robin can hear Steve giggling, “Oh like you’ve never dropped something before.”
Robin bends down to pick up the fragmented remains of the VHS. She notices another pair of hands reaching for pieces. Fingernails painted blue, the exact shade of her eyes. To confirm the color belonged to Nancy, Robin stopped picking up pieces and looked at her. Yup, the match was perfect. Nancy looked up at Robin before she could look back down. Their faces were so close that it made Robin flinch back a bit.
Nancy smiled softly, “Sorry for,” she handed Robin her pile of broken bits “scaring you twice.”
With a handful of VHS Robin panics out, “What? No- you didn’t, listen, honestly, I was just a bit surprised to see you here. You didn’t freak me out at all! I mean not in a bad way at least, you could never scare me I mean unless it was the like scared in a concerned way, like if you were hurt or something like that! I would be scared for your well being you know? You really didn’t scare me. Promise. Just surprised.”
“If you say so, Robin.”
“Well, I do say so, Nancy.” She stands up and begins walking to the trash can to throw the ‘movie’ away. “Need any help with movie picking?”
“Actually have one in mind, do you guys have Children of the Corn?” Nancy questions.
“I haven’t seen it myself but I vaguely remember seeing that one.” Robin signals for the other girl to follow her. She picks it out when she sees it. Before she hands it to her she asks, “Watching this with Byers?”
“Actually we broke up…” There’s an awkward silence between them for a moment.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry, I had no idea I would have never said that if I knew, even if I knew I swear I wouldn’t have even joked about it or anything like that-“
“Robin. It’s okay we just… fell out of love. It happens, It’s alright, I’m alright.”
“If you say so, Nancy.” She hands over the horror movie.
She softly takes it, “Well I do say so, Robin.”
Robin looks over to Steve, asking him a silent question, he nods with a knowing look.
She looks back at Nancy, “Maybe I could… watch it with you?”
♡—————————
Robin leaves work early with Nancy since she doesn’t have a car, leaving Steve at the store by himself covering Robin’s shift. She’ll definitely have to repay him later for that.
The car ride goes by relatively quickly, but the movie feels like it’s never gonna end. At least to Robin it does. Nancy seems completely unbothered; her expression hasn’t changed a single time. Robin swore to herself she would at least try to watch the film, but it was scary! All she could think of was Dustin and the other kids and she did not like it. So she rests her eyes by admiring Nancy instead. Her elegant features are defined by the light coming from the television, and oh god she looks gorgeous.
She laughs and Robin’s afraid she can read her mind because there’s no way she was laughing at that movie. Without turning her head Nancy remarks, “You said you would watch it.”
Robin’s face heats up with a noticeable color difference, “Uh- yeah, sorry. I was just impressed at how unafraid you are.”
“I’ve seen stranger things in person, and this isn’t my first time seeing this movie.”
“What made you want to watch it again?”
“Couldn’t remember how it ended.”
Robin looks back at the screen and becomes quiet as the movie progresses. When it reaches the end all Robin can think is, how the fuck could someone forget that ending?
Nancy plays back the movie to the beginning then stands up and retrieves the VHS. As she starts to slide it back into its box she abruptly asks, “Do you want me to take you home, or do you wanna stay here for the night?”
She debates herself while feeling a bit dumb for not thinking about this beforehand, “Are you sure I can stay?”
Nancy shrugs, “I don’t see why not.”
“I have a shift tomorrow at 8 am…”
“That’s fine I can take you, I wake up early anyway.”
“Alright then.”
“My bedroom is upstairs, follow me.”
Robin couldn’t think of a proper reply to her being led to a girl's bed, so she just followed silently. When they reached her room Nancy asked a question once again, “Do you wanna borrow some clothes to sleep in?”
She looked down at her clothes, “Sure.” this wouldn’t be the first time she had worn Nancy’s clothes, though this time it was actually a choice. Nancy picked out some clothes and handed them to Robin. She looked at the clothes and then at Nancy.
“Uhm… I think my closet is big enough for you to change in it.”
Robin walked into the closet and closed the doors, then hit her elbow almost immediately, “Ow fuck!”
“Are you okay in there?”
“Great, actually,” Robin replies, pulling Nancy’s shirt over her head. When she goes to put the shorts on her foot hits the door, “God Damnit!” She can hear snickering from the closet, “I can hear you!” She hurriedly finished putting on the clothes which resulted in hitting more limbs but it was worth it to see Nancy laughing.
She bursts open the doors to see Nancy with the biggest smile she had ever seen, laughing extremely loud. Man, Robin really wanted to just grab her and kiss her at this moment in time.
“I-” Nancy wheezes in between her sentence, “I’m sorry I just…” she breaks out into another fit of eye-closed cackling, unable to finish her sentence. Her laugh is contagious, so Robin starts laughing too.
Without thinking Robin leaps on top of her and pins down her arms, “Stop laughing, you're making my throat hurt!” This only made Nancy laugh more though, deeming her action useless. Robin has a moment of realization and her laughter slows then stops entirely, her face rose-colored, “Woah.”
Upon hearing that Nancy opens her eyes, “Woah.”
And of course, there’s now loud knocking on the door. Both Robin and Nancy’s eyes shoot over to the door. Robin lets go of her wrists and stands, offering a hand to Nancy. Who accepts it and walks to the door after doing so. Robin sits on the bed as she waits for her to open the door.
“Can you PLEASE stop making noise, I cannot sleep.” He glances over the room to see Robin, “What is she doing here?”
“In case you forgot Mike, I also have friends.”
Mike rolls his eyes, “Whatever goodnight.”
She closes the door after that and looks at Robin.
“Your brother is… kind of a dick to you.”
Nancy shrugs, “Puberty.” She sits down next to Robin, “It’s getting late.”
Robin yawns, “Yeah.”
“I’ll turn the lights off. I usually sleep on the left side but if you have a preference I can move.”
The lights switch off but Robin doesn’t move, “Wait we’re gonna share the bed? Isn’t that… kinda weird?”
“I mean, I used to share my bed with Barb all the time.”
“Oh- yeah, I- I’m really sorry for your loss by the way, I know it was a while ago but I never got to say that.” She fiddles with her hands.
“It’s fine, thank you though.”
