Work Text:

It had been a while since Fury had contacted him — no secret missions for Iron Man. Instead, Tony’s team had been attacking known HYDRA positions. Regrettably, none of those battles had ever been graced by the presence of a certain All-American wonder boy.

And, despite what Pepper kept saying, Tony wasn’t grumpy about it. Not at all! There had been one or two letters since that last time in London. Why would he worry?

Rolling his eyes, he grabbed the radio and barked his code into it.

‘Well, somebody’s not getting his coffee,’ Fury said, so cheerfully Tony began to suspect it wasn’t him. ‘Thought being in London would do you some good.’

Tony was indeed enjoying his leave but… well. The wonder boy hadn’t shown up in London either. ‘It has. But I guess my time off is about to end.’

‘You’re a very smart man. We have some intel about a HYDRA agent undercover in London. Recruiting or sabotaging, not sure yet. But whatever he’s doing, we gotta handle it.’

‘And who better than me, I guess.’

‘Yeah, gotta keep you entertained. We all know how you get when you’re bored.’

‘For the fifteenth time, I didn’t know it was going to explode. But that’s irrelevant now. Where can I find the intel?’

‘Usual dead drop.’

An hour later, Tony was huddling inside his jacket, enjoying great London weather: a cold, relentless rain. The file was safely inside his jacket. He had only glanced at it, but it was simple enough. A man was posing as a recently arrived French resistance member, but his story didn’t hold together.

‘Tony?’ he heard behind him. Oh, that voice. That wonderful, happy voice.

He turned around, his heart beating hard. ‘Steve?’

‘So this is what Fury meant.’

‘He sent you here too?’ he asked, frowning.

‘Yeah. Told me I’d really enjoy the company.’

It was pretty scary realizing Fury knew about them. And generally, he hated feeling manipulated. But this time he didn’t give a damn. He’d get some time with Steve, punching bad guys. ‘Well, he was damn right about that,’ he said, smirking. ‘We’re going to have a ball.’

Steve laughed. ‘Okay, but only if you let me punch the Nazis first.’
