Ask First

Summary:

NaruYaha Week Day 1 - Beginning

Four year old Phoenix has a sour experience the first time he attends daycare.

Work Text:

It wasn’t something he was open about, but Phoenix Wright had always been a mama’s boy. If he had a choice, he would have never had to leave her side. Unfortunately, he had to face the sudden reality check that she couldn’t always be accessible to him, and he didn’t like that very much at all.

Profuse apology was drowned out by the toddler on her leg who needed a crowbar to pull him away. The caregiver was rather understanding; it wasn’t like Phoenix was the first child in the universe with separation anxiety. At long last, his restless energy had been drained down to wibbly sobs as Phoenix realized that maybe, perhaps, his mother would return, but he would have to see for himself before he could trust that.

Of course, he didn’t know anyone here. There weren’t a lot of kids his age in the neighborhood, so he didn’t recognize anyone in this new place. He just had to pass the time until he could see his mom again, and was sure that playing with crayons in the corner would leave him with enough peace for the day. Reaching for the red crayon, Phoenix’s eyes shot up when he noticed it was missing and locked eyes with another little boy who held it in his fist.

“You can’t use my crayons,” Phoenix protested.

“They’re not your crayons,” the other boy argued. “They’re Teacher’s crayons. You’re just using them.”

“Which means that right now, they’re mine. You gotta ask first!”

“Fine! Can I use your crayons?”

Phoenix looked him right in the eye. “No.”

The boy growled with a huff, chucking the crayon back into Phoenix’s face.

“I am so sorry about Phoenix’s behavior today. He’s always such a polite little boy, but he doesn’t interact with other children that often.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it. Larry’s always causing trouble in the first place. I should be apologizing to you.”

Larry rolled his eyes as the parents had their debrief on the fight that “he caused,” apparently, slumping against the couch. “This sucks.”

Phoenix fidgeted next to him. “I’m sorry. I should have shared.”

“I shouldn’t have hit you.” Larry pouted.

“I shouldn’t have hit back,” Phoenix agreed.

After a moment of silence, Larry glanced over to him. “… Do you wanna play together tomorrow?”

Phoenix gave him a little smile. “Okay.”
