It was said that any foal sired by such a creature would be stronger and swifter and than any raging river, and more beautiful and fierce than the wildest waterfall and more sure-footed and fearless than any mortally-bred beast. To match such traits with the sweet, loyal temperament of her pretty mare? The foal that resulted would be magnificent.
She also knew the stories, of the creature's appetites.
She knew it would eagerly devour any who strayed into its reach.
She knew it would eagerly devour her.
And she wanted to be safely back in the village and away from the water when night fell.
Her heart was in her throat as she approached the riverbank, anxiously scanning the gently flowing current for the telltale ripples that could warn her of the creature's impending ambush. But as long minutes passed without sign of the creature's reappearance, she began her tentative approach to the bank where she had secured her mare's tether.
But as she knelt to yank the stake from the spongey ground, she didn't see the surface of the river begin to ripple.
There was no time to even scream as the creature erupted from the river, lunging directly for her.
