Work Text:

“Alex?”

Alex looked up from their copy of Emma, having decided to do a re-read in anticipation of watching Clueless.

Morgan stood in front of them, looking. . . Nervous. Very, very nervous.

“Yeah?” They said, closing the book. “What’s up?”

“I need to tell you something.”

Morgan wasn’t usually this tight lipped. Something must be wrong.

“What is it? Finally make your first kill?” Alex teased, trying to lighten the mood and make their partner feel better.

Morgan shook their head. “No, I. . . Do you want to know why I thought you were a god?”

Alex gave them a look. That was ridiculous. It was obvious.

“I know why,” Alex said slowly. “It’s because I’m all powerful.”

Morgan flinched. “Well, yes, but there’s also—” They took a deep breath before saying, “I’m a god!”

Alex couldn’t breathe.

After a few moments, they managed to choke out, “You’re— You’re what?

Morgan nodded, looking ashamed. They snapped their fingers and a Rubix cube-like object manifested itself in the room, floating and almost holy.

“I’m a new god,” Morgan said quietly. “I’m your age, really. I just— I thought you were an old god having fun.”

Alex swallowed. That. . . That made sense.

“Then why tell me now?” They asked hoarsely, hoping for a good answer. Any kind of good answer.

Tears were welling up in Morgan’s eyes. “Because yesterday I found out that one day I’m going to lose you, and I— I can’t live like that, Alex. I love you.”

Alex dropped their book.

“Morgan,” They said, very slowly. “You don’t— you don’t mean that. You’re— You’re just grieving me too early.”

Morgan shook their head, the Rubix cube still floating. “No, I just see what’s been right in front of me all along. I love you. And it’s okay if you don’t love me back—”

“Whoever said I don’t love you?”

Morgan’s eyes widened. “But— But your reaction—”

“This has been,” Alex said slowly, “a lot to process. I just— I need to do something mindless before we carry on this conversation, okay?”

Morgan nodded and snapped their fingers, making the cube disappear.

Alex gave a relieved smile. “Thanks. Now. . . Do you want to watch Clueless with me?”

Morgan smiled back. “Yeah. Yeah, I’d love to watch Clueless with you.”
