A Contest of Surprises

Summary:

Sometimes it feels like Alphys and Undyne are competing to see who can best surprise the other. Today, it feels like no one can top this one.

Work Text:

“Undyne, where are we going?”

“I told you, it’s a surprise!”

“Can I try to guess?” Alphys asked.

“I mean, sure, but you’re not going to get it.”

Alphys sighed. “Well, are we almost there?”

“Yeah, just another half hour.” Undyne flipped on the turn signal of her car and went right.

Just another half hour? Alphys wondered what all this was about.

But just as Undyne had said, a half hour passed, and they arrived at the place.

“Oh, wow…” Alphys sucked in a breath as Undyne parked in a little lot beside an expansive purple field of flowers. The smell was woodsy, herbal, rather sharp. “Lavender?”

“Yup!” Undyne beamed. She got out of the car and went to the trunk. “I brought food! Let’s go get a good spot.”

“W-Wait—is this a date?! I didn’t even dress that nicely!”

“Hey, neither did I. It’s fine! I just wanted to bring you someplace new, that’s all.”

Alphys blushed as she followed Undyne into the lavender field. Dating Undyne felt like a contest of surprises, sometimes. It would be hard to beat this one.

They eventually found a small clearing, and Undyne set down a picnic blanket and a basket.

“What did you cook?” Alphys asked nervously.

“Nothing, actually.” Undyne pulled out some sandwiches and grapes. “I know I kind of make a mess of things… so I went simple. No fires were started in the making of this food!” She pulled out more food—celery sticks and carrots… and then a small container of brownies. “Sorry they’re store-bought. Last time I tried making brownies myself, I almost burnt our house down.”

“Yeah, I remember that,” Alphys laughed. “It’s fine, I’m sure they’ll be yummy!”

She had to admit, the sandwiches—some peanut butter and jelly, some ham with lettuce and tomato—weren’t bad. The fruit and veggies were fresh, and the brownies tasted about as good as store-bought brownies could be. Alphys was stuffed when the last of the food disappeared.

She looked up into the sky. She could see the edge of the sunset in the distance.

“Oh! Come on, let’s clean up. We’re not done here,” Undyne said, beginning to gather the trash from their picnic.

“Oh, okay…”

The girls were soon done cleaning up. They ran the basket back to the car, then Undyne picked up Alphys and began to run straight across the field. “U-Undyne, what’s g-going—”

“Just wait till you see this!” Undyne shouted.

When she stopped, Alphys realized the lavender field had come to an end—right at the outer edge of a small beach. Undyne set Alphys down and walked into the sand, finding a comfortable spot and patting next to her. Alphys settled into the sand, still warm from the day’s sunshine. She didn’t even need to ask Undyne what they were supposed to be looking at—she knew.

The sun was just touching the water across the horizon, turning the blue waters red and yellow and pink. The clouds were pink as well, and the sky was fading from fiery orange in front of them to purple above them to deep blue behind them.

Alphys closed her eyes and listened to the waves tossing and the lavender behind them moving in the breeze. She could feel Undyne’s hand in hers. She fell to the side, leaning against Undyne, who turned her head to kiss her scaly frills.

“You win,” Alphys murmured.

“…Win what?”

“The surprise contest.”

“We were having a contest?”

“Feels like it sometimes. But you definitely c-can’t top this.”

“Aw, Al… all of your surprises are the best.” Undyne cupped Alphys’s face in her hand. “It’s not a contest. I just like surprising you with cool stuff.”

Alphys nuzzled her face into Undyne’s hand. “I’ll still try to get you back, you know.”

“Oh, I know.” Undyne smiled, and bent down to kiss Alphys’s lips.
