Once upon a time, Vegas was a member of that flock.

The thing Korn didn’t know about the incident (that Gun didn’t know, that Tankhun didn’t know, that no one but Vegas knew) was that Vegas had never wielded the murder weapon at all. He didn’t know that the moment the bodyguard made it clear that he posed a threat to Vegas, Kim had not hesitated to pick up the screwdriver lying idly on the windowsill and use every ounce of his meagre strength to drive it once into the man’s throat, and then once more into his skull; he didn’t know that Kim had turned to Vegas, as the bodyguard lay choking on his own blood, and told him, flames burning in his eyes, that he had to learn to stand up for himself if he wanted to survive in this world. He didn’t know that Kim had pressed the screwdriver into Vegas’s hand and asked if he wanted to drive the makeshift blade home one last time, as the vengeance he was owed from the man’s corpse. He didn’t know that it was then, and only then, that Tankhun had opened the door; he didn’t know that the true monster he had created with this particular scheme now lay dormant within his youngest son.
The thing Kim didn’t know about the incident was that it had happened before - not the murder, but the reason for it. He didn’t know that the reason Vegas always stayed away from him from that moment onwards was that the very sight of Kim made the shame crawl up his throat until he felt like he was choking on it; that Kim’s utter lack of hesitation in the face of the mere threat of abuse felt like the worst kind of mirror for his own inability to fight back the first few times it had been directed towards him. He didn't know that Vegas spent every single day since the incident remoulding himself in the image of Kim in that playroom: a fiery avenging angel, merciless, upon whom no one could hope to gaze without feeling the stirrings of abject terror. He didn't know that Vegas continued to avoid him thereafter, above any other member of the family, because he was afraid to look at Kim and be reminded of the certain knowledge that he could never live up to that image.
