Summary
She squirms as he wraps her in the fur he brought and embraces her. She is not ostensibly fighting, and her passivity is almost worse than resistance would have been, tugging at his heart with nailless fingers, with blunted barbs that he cannot latch to, let alone encourage to snag into him, to make and stake a claim anywhere upon him. It is an unsettling mismatch.
To show her that he is not mad at her, he loosens his grip upon her while keeping her within his arms, and he murmurs to her, “What troubles you, my little princess?”
She does not answer immediately. She watches him rub her hands for friction, to kindle within them an ember of warmth. She is quiet for a long time.
But then, finally, when he keeps her close and there are no reprimands coming, he can feel her little body go slack against him.
“Do you hate me?”

(Or, Dimitri's daughter runs away. Though he has an idea of where she might be, it's not because he is such a great parent, but because he recognises a pain he failed to protect her from.)
